35 and Pregnant

Hi I've just found out I'm pregnant, only four weeks. I'm trying not to get too excited yet as I had a MMC earlier this year, however this one already feels different so I am hopeful.

When you reach 35 is your pregnancy treated as a higher risk because of you age? I just wondered what to expect

I was pregnant aged 39 back in 2012. Treated no differently.

Congratulations!

SnailandtheWail · 11/12/2021 08:40

Mine wasn’t, no difference in treatment at all! Had a very healthy pregnancy no gestational diabetes or anything like that. Good luck!

MissLC · 11/12/2021 08:42

Congratulations! I was 34 when I got pregnant and turned 35 before baby was born and my age wasn't mentioned at all.
Hope this pregnancy goes really smoothly for you and that you enjoy it

Turniptracker · 11/12/2021 08:43

I asked my midwife at my booking appointment about this. Apparently over 40 now is when they start referring to it as a geriatric pregnancy

Cantthinkofaname99 · 11/12/2021 08:50

I'm 35 and currently 20 weeks pregnant with my second and considered low risk.

Although I did notice something in my notes that if over 35 depends on particular trust guidance. I'm guessing if you have no other risk factors then you will be low risk.

Minorissue · 11/12/2021 08:57

Pregnant at 34 and 37. Not treated any differently and age wasn’t mentioned generally. Age will just be a factor when they’re assessing risks of various syndromes.

welshladywhois40 · 11/12/2021 08:57

40 is the cutoff so you are actually too young! I had my first at 38 and asked the midwife if my age would be considered a risk and she laughed at me and said no.

I'm her eyes no because she just had her 5th at 42. Didn't find her logic very helpful to be fair.

Dyra · 11/12/2021 09:07

Just turned 35 when found out pregnant with DC2. Very little has been different about this pregnancy, other than the extra care I'm getting due to pre-eclampsia with DC1. The only age related thing that's come up so far is that I've got one extra point towards calculating if I'll be getting blood thinners post birth. That's it.

kitkatsky · 11/12/2021 09:11

It might vary by age. My mw filled in a questionnaire for my risk of blood clots and being over 35 gave me an extra point on this, though I was low risk in all other areas so didn't need the injections.

Also, you'll notice that your age affects the ratios in your risk of chromosomal abnormalities, so if you're comparing your baby's Down's syndrome score with a younger woman, don't panic if yours is a lot higher than hers. For example, first pregnancy aged 25 my risk was one in 18000, second at 35 was one in 8000, so still tiny risk and both babies ok but the difference surprised me. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy

Chely · 11/12/2021 09:16

Congrats. Just adds to the scoring factors for some things but you have to tick multiple boxes, age alone doesn't class you high risk.

I was 36/37 with last and it wasn't an issue, I've been classed high risk after our 2nd was over 4.5kg at birth though (I was 26). I was still called young by the consultants when I had our twins at 30. Main difference with being high risk is you see doctors rather than just the community midwives.

CherryRedDMs · 11/12/2021 09:17

I was 38 and the youngest on the delivery ward, times have changed

Pitstop1986 · 11/12/2021 11:28

I'm 35, first pregnancy and have been fit as a fiddle and healthy throughout. I'm just over 36 weeks and still active, no problems or health concerns.

My Auntie was 41 with her first pregnancy and was exactly the same as me- fit and healthy throughout.

Derbee · 11/12/2021 11:29

On my pregnancy notes, they give you “points” for risk factors. The age one is 40 and over

Derbee · 11/12/2021 11:29

I’m 35 and pregnant with my first and my age hasn’t been mentioned

Fleur405 · 11/12/2021 13:23

I was 38 last time and not really treated any differently. This time I was about 40 and two weeks and automatically placed under consultant led care. 40 seems to be the real cut off at least in my experience.

MajorNeville · 11/12/2021 13:32

I had mine at 34 & 38, at 38 they circled my age on my notes but that was the only time it was different than at 34, my age was never mentioned. I think if your otherwise fit and well it's ok.

Somerandomgirl · 12/12/2021 15:55

Not if you're otherwise healthy x

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 12/12/2021 16:42

It totally depends on the trust. In mine it’s age 35, but my MW did say they’re trying to change it to 40.

Squirrelinatree · 12/12/2021 19:54

I’m about to turn 37 and I’m 14 weeks pregnant. I’d heard from others that I wouldn’t have same birth choices that I had with my son when I was 33 but midwife said it’s not a problem as I’m otherwise healthy, healthy bmi etc. My notes say low risk so hopefully it will be the same for you. Good luck with your pregnancy

Roseandgeranium · 12/12/2021 20:10

I had my first at 36 and second at 39. Age not considered a risk factor in either pregnancy. Congratulations and good luck!

SomeoneSomewhere1219 · 13/12/2021 12:36

Thank you all for your replies. Reassuring to know.

Now I just need to sit tight and wait until I can see that little heartbeat.

Thank you all again, I haven't told anybody yet not even my partner. I'm saving it for Christmas but also trying to get past the point of MMC stage I was at last time. It's nice to have friends in my phone x

Good luck. I can’t imagine going through the early days of pregnancy without my partner knowing straight away, and supporting me. Hope it all goes well

GinnyBee · 13/12/2021 13:49

Sorry for your loss xx
I had two before this pregnancy, one mc and one mmc. Sucks a lot.

I'm also 35 and pregnant with my first, 18 weeks. I'm not, as far as I know, considered high risk at all. My 12-week screening results also came back as low as they go, 1:10,000 and 1:100,000 (forget which was which)

The only 'extra' I've been recommended to have is the glucose tolerance test, but that has nothing to do with my age and everything to do with my mum's diabetes.

brokendark · 13/12/2021 13:51

My Lord, midwives are not going to blink an eye at 35! Congratulations!

PurplePansy05 · 13/12/2021 18:45

OP, good luck. I had two MMCs and an early MC at 32-33 and then a healthy baby boy just as I turned 35. Treated no different because of age, however as I was classed to be a recurrent miscarrier I was under specialist care for that reason, and later on due to some complications (non age related). Very best of luck, try to distract yourself if you get anxious (it's hard, I know) Flowers xx
