Does anyone have ulcerative colitis while they have been pregnant?

I did OP, and I had a couple of flare ups. Anything in particular you want to ask?

I flared first trimester, third trimester and after the birth. For all three.

Hi, I have UC and have done for nearly 20 years. During my first pregnancy I was absolutely fine with no flare ups, they didn't say I would have a flare, just said to be prepared for one after birth due to changes in your body, luckily I didn't have one. Fingers crossed you won't do either.

babyjenks93 · 14/12/2021 22:46

OP, I don't know if it's the same with Crohns, but my consultant has not mentioned anything like that. I flared in the first trimester (I was miserable) but a couple of weeks into the second I got better. No one has ever mentioned to me a flare is a sure thing after birth. Hormonal changes can trigger a flare so we should be ready for the eventuality, but I wouldn't live with the anxiety of it for the rest of your pregnancy. Keep yourself well monitored, you should see an obstetrician as well as your gastro consultant, get them to work together!! :) xx

Thank you guys for all your responses!! I am just going with the flow at the moment I hope I don't get a flare up but fingers crossed let's see what happens

Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy @Alisha32! How far along are you?

I've had UC for 27 years, currently 17 weeks pregnant with my second.

First time round I had a huge flare up within a week of finding out I was pregnant, which took two back to back courses of steroids to fix. Stayed well for the rest of the pregnancy and then had another flare up about month after giving birth.

This time I've been as well I could possibly have hoped for.

The advice I was given was that there is a much higher risk of a flare up after giving birth (though not a certainty) so I'd suggest keeping a very close eye on any early signs of feeling unwell and get help quickly if you need to.

I have another friend with colitis who had a baby the same month as me. She was well through the entire pregnancy and after, so it can be done.

Good luck x

Hi alisha
I had a small flare up in my first pregnancy between weeks 20-30 which settled with medication. No flare up at all afterwards. Currently 13 weeks with second and all fine so far.
Worrying about it is the worst thing for you and it certainly isn’t a definite

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 17/12/2021 15:37

Hi there, I have UC and I had a flare in the second trimester but nothing after giving birth, or since (long may that continue). I stayed on meds throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Good luck OP!

Bonnealle · 17/12/2021 15:39

I had two flare ups, but did a course of my two regular tablets and was fine.

Alisha32 · 01/02/2022 08:52

I am currently taking mesalazine and I am noticing bloody stools
And I am so afraid not sure what the the doctors will do as I am pregnant too

Hi all. I have ulcerative colitis and was just told yesterday in a consultant appointment that there is a higher risk of placenta fail, which means a) I have to deliver by 40 weeks and b) they would like to monitor baby continuously throughout labour, which means the labour ward rather than the midwife led birthing centre. Has anyone else been told this? I was really hoping for a midwife led, birthing pool birth, calm, relaxed, dim lights and no more people present that absolutely necessary.

OP: are you feeling better? they told me yesterday that during a flare up in pregnancy they treat you as normal, so I wouldn't worry too much. you should get extra scans to monitor baby's growth etc.
