Anyone had one??? I'm booked in for one tomorrow and was just wondering what happens if they see anything isn't as they want.

ooh is that the one that shows the colurs for blood flow?

i had one of those, to check that the lakes in my placenta (of blood) were still working. they were.

just looks like lots of colours moving around

LiegeAndLief · 18/12/2007 12:42

I've had one. I had pre-eclampsia and they were looking for reduced or reversed blood flow to the placenta (think that's right - me to placenta rather than placenta to baby?). If the flow is reduced (mine was), they will need to keep a close eye on you as this can cause IUGR - probably further dopplers and growth scan. If it is reversed I think this is more serious, in my case they would have delivered me but I don't know what implications it would have in someone without pre-eclampsia. Good luck, hope it goes well.

LiegeAndLief · 18/12/2007 12:42

Yes it's the one with the colours! Looks quite pretty

BBBee · 18/12/2007 12:55

I had one too to check the blood flow of the placenta - it is colourful - but a peaky graph rather than a nice pic of a baby. It makes a whoosy noise.

It was looking to see the blodd flow and checked that as the blood flowed in that is flowed out at the same rate as this somehow measures if the blood is sufficently getting to the baby. They found that the flow was not as great as it should be - (the bloke did a kind of face that made me heart miss a beat and I ran into the toilets after and cried) but was nothing to worry about - they just monitored more closely how my baby was growing to see if all that should eb getting through was.

that is all a bit blah blah - do you get my drift?

ask me what you like.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 13:08

What you're all saying makes sense(surprisingly).

I had a placental abruption with my first pregnancy and apparently it can be caused by Pre-elcampsia, which is more common if something hasn't happened to a blood vessel(?) at by 24 weeks of pg.

So from your opinions, if all isn't as they want I'll just have further monitoring?? That's not too bad as I already have growth scans/consultant appointments booked for 30 and 36 weeks anyway, so I would hope they'd do it all at once.

BBBee · 18/12/2007 13:11

well from my expereince things were not quite as they wanted and I had monthly and the every two weeks scans up until the end (if the baby is growing stuff is getting through). There was talk of early induction if growth slowed down but that was last resort stuff.

Good luck.

LiegeAndLief · 18/12/2007 13:12

Yes, my consultant said that if I get pregnant again they will do a doppler at 24 weeks and from that will be able to have a fair idea of whether I will get pre-eclampsia again - so that is probably what they are doing for you? In which case, yes, definitely more monitoring, they will probably want to do a lot of bp and urine checks as well if PE is a concern. And take a lot of blood! I went for a follow-up appt (so wasn't even pg) and they took SIX vials!

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 13:17

Ah, induction is something I don't want, I'm hoping to have a VBA2C, so it's one of my 'noooooooooooooooo I can't have that things!'.
Fingers crossed it's all ok.
I'm quite surprised actually, the placental abruption was with my DD, with DS (4 yearslater) they didn't bother with any of this, it's only now I'm pg again and using a different hospital they are checking.

OP posts:
BBBee · 18/12/2007 13:20

oh darling it is so down to the hospital and the consultant. I was induced at 38 weeks with ds (ruptured memberanes standard vaginal dleivery) and then exact same situation with DD and different consultant and hospital. Consultant anti-induction so I was let to get on with it. She was born at 39+2.

Ask ,loads of quesions.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 19/12/2007 13:25

So, apparently, it's not all working properly.
The blood flow isn't right and they'ved labelled all my notes as 'hypertensive pregnancy'. I have had goodness knows how much blood taken and have to go back on the third of January t see a specailist consultant, a midwife and an obs.
Good thing is where I've been reffered to is where the private patients go so my room should be nicer.

OP posts:
LiegeAndLief · 19/12/2007 16:50

Sorry to hear that, don't understand the hypertensive pregnancy bit at all if they haven't even taken your bp? (saw your other post). Maybe they can tell your bp from the doppler? (have no idea though!). I know bp can rise very quickly if associated with pre-eclampsia, but not sure about other situations. Hope they just want to keep a close eye on you and there won't be any problems with your VBA2C.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 19/12/2007 17:11

I know, I found it weird too, apparently other peopel have said it's likely they'd want to induce me at 39weeks now, but as they don't induce with VBAC's I might end up having to have a cs
At least if I do have one I know that I've tried and there was no other way round it I suppose.

OP posts:
camillathechicken · 19/12/2007 17:39

oh dear , that sounds disheartening

i presume you will have much closer monitoring now..

i am afraid i don;t know anything about this sort of thing, but it is worth finding out more...

sorry it was not what you were hoping for x

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 19/12/2007 17:47

Thanks for looking anyway camilla. I'd still love to have my VBAC and if they tell me I need a cs at 39weeks(if I get that far) I'll have lots of sex and nipple stimualtion from 38weeks but I'm not risking the oxytocin and at least if I do have a cs I know I've tried everything to get my VBAC, plus I've actually thought about it for my birth plan so it's not totally out of the blue.

I do want to find out what the chances are of anything bad happening after 39weeks if I get that far, I'd have thought if I got to 39weeks then I could ask for a trial of labour if everything is still ok.

OP posts:
camillathechicken · 19/12/2007 17:52

i think you need to hold off worrying too much until yoiu;ve been back to consult in january.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 19/12/2007 17:55

I know, I know, tbh now theyve said this I'm more worried about another placental abruption than a cs.
