Weight loss

Im waiting for a call back from my midwife but thought I'd ask if anyone has any personal experience.

Im currently 19 week pregnant and since my booking in appointment at 7 week I've lost almost 2 stone. From week 7 to 13 I was sick all the time so I expected to lose weight during that time, I was hospitalised for fluids twice due to sickness during that time but since 13 week my sickness has been managed by medication and I've only been sick a handful of times and I've been eating almost normally since then.

I am obese and my starting weight was just under 20 stone I'm now 18 stone and my weight still seems to be coming off even though I'm not trying to lose weight. Obviously I'm obese so I could do with losing the weight but is it safe for baby for weight still to be coming off?

It's quite common for obese women to lose weight in pregnancy. As long as you're getting in your vitamins (d and folic acid) and have a good iron intake, it's absolutely fine if you were overweight to begin with. I presume that you're under consultant for weight if your BMI is more than 35? I expect they'll rule out thyroid and other causes of weight loss and advise you from there.
In my first pregnancy I was a size 16 when I got pregnant and like you suffered crippling Hyperemesis and I was a size 10 when my baby was born. I was 13kg lighter at end of pregnancy than I was when I got pregnant. I was about 3 stone lighter a couple of weeks after baby born (after baby and fluid gone). I'm sure that you feel much better sickness wise but I bet your appetite is reduced as most sufferers of Hyperemesis experience this. I'm pregnant with number 2 and have not put on any weight (30 weeks) due to reduced appetite and sickness. You'll be absolutely fine!

Oh, my baby was 8lb when born and she's the picture of hearth!

I'd check for gestational diabetes too. unfortunately that can be a cause of unexpected weight loss. hopefully that's not the case and just you aren't eating as much since you were so sick but best to b checked out

Thank you that's very reassuring - I had a scan this week and baby is growing nicely and I was concerned about that. Yes I'm consultant lead but haven't actually spoken to one yet. Obviously I'm happy to be losing weight I just didn't want it to have a knock on effect on baby.

Some days I eat loads but others I hardly eat anything due to feeling sick still.

Thanks again and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

I went from 14 stone to 11 stone in the first half of my first pregnancy because of morning sickness. Baby was fine and nearly 9lbs.

@Bells3032 I've got my test early Jan to check

I lost about 10kg in my first and second trimesters. Wasn’t obese, but overweight and referred for a GTT for when I’m 28 weeks. Currently 25 weeks and just got back to my booking in weight. I think as long as you’re not actively trying to lose weight, things will settle.

My midwife says the most important thing is a healthy diet rather than focusing too much on weight

I’ve had a BMI of 30ish in all my pregnancies, and lost between 8-15kg in each one. In some I’ve been sick but mostly it’s been because I have lots of food aversions and don’t feel hungry in pregnancy.

All 3 babies have grown fine Smile currently 31 weeks pregnant and 15kg down from starting weight!
