UTI in pregnancy

I had my first check up with my midwife last week and mentioned to her I am unfortunately prone to wee infections.

She said to let her know as soon as I feel one is coming on. Has anyone any experience with taking antibiotics when pregnant for a UTI?

She mentions there is some safe ones to use but obviously I am anxious as I do feel one coming on already Sad

Please make sure to get your uti treated. She's a medical professional, you will be treated with the appropriate antibiotics. An untreated uti during pregnancy can have serious consequences.

Yes about 7 times in my third pregnancy. Far better to treat than it is to risk it developing to your kidneys.

Hi, OP

I have first hand experience of utis pre and during pregnancy. You will be given the antibiotics which are most safe.

Not to worry you, but l had constant infections and ended up in hospital for 5 days with a rare strain of uti.

I would speak to the doctor as to why it keeps coming back. As some antibiotics do not work on some strains.

Thank you everyone so much this really helps me.

I'll speak to my Midwife today- she was very strict about getting it treated.

To those who did take the antibiotics- do you remember which ones you took and everything was ok?

Cephalexin (spelling?) worked with one course, didn't have any further UTIs and baby is now a very happy and healthy 3 month old.

Yep I have been on 7 courses of antibiotics to get rid of a UTI, the final course was a 4 week course and finally got rid of it. Finished taking that 2 weeks ago (I'm currently 32 weeks), I first had it at 21 weeks so has a pretty rough 8 weeks or so.
My short term courses were all Nitrofurantoin (prescribed by my GP), the 4 week course was Cefalexin which was prescribed by an obstetrician at the hospital. Looking online both are safe in pregnancy however Nitrofurantoin isn't recommended to take when at full term, when I was prescribed the last course the intention was to keep me on them until I gave birth which is why it was changed to Cefalexin. My last sample was negative at the lab though so they made the decision to take me off them (which I wasn't happy about at the time!) and see how I got on. I'd never had a UTI before and wouldn't wish them on my worse enemy!

Thanks for sharing your experience @mummyh2016 how awful to experience it during pregnancy when never had them before.

I am prone to them so terrified really. I would only get them when having a bath (with bath bombs- sadly can't use!) or intercourse with partner and then obviously not weeing after at times ...

I have text my midwife this morning to ask for some antibiotics as I feel one coming on. She did take a urine sample when I had my 1st appointment and noticed there was an infection so I think hopefully she'll go by that.

Thanks everyone for your comments they have been reassuring for me x

OP I probably wouldn't bother with the midwife unless you're seeing her anyway, she can't prescribe so she will need to contact your GP anyway which she may not do straight away if she's in clinic. If you're near your surgery call them and ask them if you can drop a sample in as you have symptoms and you're pregnant. You shouldn't need to see or speak to a GP, they will normally just get the nurse to dip test it then send a prescription to the chemist.

I was also prone to UTIs before pregnancy but they always cleared up easily by just flushing my system with tons of water for a few days.
However bizarrely the first UTI I got in pregnancy was asymptomatic & was picked up in my urine sample from my 12 week scan, GP & midwife both said to get it treated straight away with antibiotics as if I don't even know I have it, then it could easily get worse and spread to kidneys etc would could require going onto a drip in the hospital to clear up.
I had amoxicillin and at my next appointment the urine dip was fine.

HyphenCobra · 08/12/2021 12:36

This week contacted hospital midwife team. Went up, was seen and checked including listening to baby heartbeat and vhecking my blood pressure, given antibiotics by the doctor which i collected from hospital pharmacy. All done within an hour. Far better than my GP would have been if i could have even got an appointment!! Xx

mollieroses · 08/12/2021 13:56

I'v had amoxicillin and cefalexin, no issues for DC3.

I have been treated three times for UTIs in this pregnancy. Each time I have been given Nitrofurantoin, and it’s cleared up. Twice I had infection detected from routine urine tests, but had no symptoms.

I was nervous about taking medication during pregnancy, but the midwife and GP a explained that an untreated UTI is much worse than taking a safe antibiotic! Good luck

Thank you that's very true. Just waiting to hear back. She may tell me I indeed need to go to my doctors!

Definitely get any UTI sorted in pregnancy ASAP. I had an undetected UTI which turned into sepsis and I was hospitalised for a week…. Get it sorted when you can feel one coming up!

LaMadrilena · 08/12/2021 14:29

Yep, I had 5 different antibiotics in my first trimester due to a particularly stubborn UTI. No after effects, DD now 6 months and strong as an ox. Also clever, beautiful, hilarious, etc etc Grin. Don't worry, just get it treated, there are plenty of appropriate treatments. Hope all goes well!
