Your midwife may raise the issue with you anyway as being overweight can increase the risk of gestatation diabetes, among other things.

DO NOT DO SLIMFAST!!

Are you eating out of physical or emotional hunger, ie, are you eating cos you are nervous about being a mother or finances? I was an emotional eater so i know what it feels like to eat and eat without being hungry.

Slimfast is a really terrible idea. It is unhealthy even for people who are not pregnant. You will endanger your baby and yourself. Believe me I went from 17st to 10st10 (sensibly, with Weight Watchers) so I know a thing or two about weight issues.

The best thing you can do for you and your baby is eat lots of fruit and veg, lean meat, fat free yogurt, skimmed milk and plenty of pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. All the usual really. And you know all that. Drink two liters of water a day and do something active everyday, like half an hour walk. The most important trick in my book: Don't wait until after Christmas as you will stuff yourself silly until then thinking 'I will do it all after Christmas', start now and have the day off on Christmas day.

And...your midwife has seen worse, believe me. You can also ask for a referral to a dietitian who can tell you how much you should be eating to minimise weight gain and grow a healthy baby.

madChristmasmouse · 17/12/2007 21:22

Forgot to say the most important thing: Good luck, you can do it. You have the power to make the right choices, but it is hard. I found it hard and at the time I only had myself to worry about.Post here if you need some support, I am around over the hols and will post back!

PortAndLemonaid · 17/12/2007 21:24

Your midwife already knows you are that big . No way is she going to think any the worse of you if you ask for help and a referral to a dietician or other specialist.

No to Slimfast and any other diet foods - they contain the usual amount of vitamin a in the form of retinol, which can cause foetal abnormalities. This is why you shouldn't eat liver products.
The only thing you can do is to watch what you eat - try to fill up on fruit, veg, plenty of carbs and lean meat. Switch to using a spray oil such as frylight instead of normal cooking oil. Cut out the sugary snacks and crisps and such.
Your MW will hep and support you and will have seen other women in your position before. She will just want to make sure you and your baby are healthy - she will not judge you. Seek her advice.
Swimming is a great exercise as well, won't stress your joints and will help keep you fit. I found it really helped with my chronic back ache. I also did prenatal aquafit as well, have a look for a class near you.
Good luck!

i dont have anything extra to add except to good luck and take care of yourself and your little one!

My advice is to cut out wheat and processed foods- only eat fresh, even if you over eat, you'll be eating the right things and try to eat lots of fruit, veg, porridge, fish and drink loads of water. I did this and lost 5 stone in a few months (although i've completely lost the will now I'm preggers). This worked a MILLION times better for me than slimfast. It's not a fad diet and it's very healthy for you and baby- plus it doesn't matter how much you eat because it's healthy and you're flushing your body with water all the time.

If you don't succeed at slim fast, when you start to eat again you put on TWICE the weight. I lost 9 pound in a week and put double that back on in a weekend. It's not worth risking it unless you're happy to be even bigger. Plus it's not good for baby.

No wheat, no processed food, no sauces, lots of fresh foods and stick low fat humous on anything. Good luck, hope you see the weight fall off like I did

Sarahjct · 18/12/2007 12:11

You won't necessarily put on lots of weight. I was a good 20/22 before I got pg and, despite eating what I want and lots of it, I've only put on about a stone - I could usually put that on in a weekend! I'm 37 weeks now so hopefully won't put on too much more.

It's when she pops out and I'm at home in front of the telly all day that I'll really start to worry... Anyone know how soon you can start dieting? I hope to BF but, presumably as long as I diet healthily this should be ok?

missvicki · 18/12/2007 12:30

Hi mummyme2 i totally sympathsise with you i am my self also 24/26 dress size and pregnant with my first baby (little unplanned)!

I was with slimming world trying to lose weight to get pregnant when i found out i was. I only managed to lose a stone! My midwife has been brilliant though, she has told me not to diet but to just eat sensibly and not do the usual eat for two as it's not needed! And to be honest my own body seems to be regulating my weight for me. Started the pregnancy with majorly bad morning sickness which resulted in weight loss but now i am back eating normally i am finding that i'm unable to pig out and if i do over eat or eat something that is really wrong for me i am sick.

So far i'm 20+4 and still in my normal jeans (size26) Midwife says i seem to be swapping fat for baby at the min. But it is worring and i don't want to get any larger.

So in a nut shell i would try not to worry too much but just keep eating sensibly and with moderation.

nooonit · 19/12/2007 11:40

I'm in same situation, mummyme2! I was wearing size 22/24 before I got pregnant but haven't found that I've actually put that much weight on this time, apart from on my bump!I've worried a bit about being self conscious - being weighed, feeling guilty when I had to have a glucose test etc but as other people have said midwives have seen it all (literally!) before.
I think the key is to eat sensibly and not let it spoil your pregnancy. I know it sounds a bit sappy, but whatever size you are your body is doing an amazing thing!
