Constantly feeling starving in early pregnancy

I'm 9wks and currently suffering with morning sickness. The only way I seem to be able to stop being so sick is to eat little and often and stop myself getting too hungry.

It's not too bad at home but when I'm at work I feel like I'm constantly starving and battling throwing up. I did just read that you're not supposed to eat more in your first trimester, but at the moment I feel like I'm constantly eating so much food.

I have cereal for breakfast and then a couple of biscuits or crackers when I get into work (1hr 1/2 commute). I've got sandwiches on wholemeal bread for lunch along with fruit (varies, today I had an apple, 1/2 a mango and two satsumas), a box of chopped up cucumber and carrots and 2 rice cakes. Also a packet of crisps as I seem to be craving salt, a cereal bar and a box of 4-6 plain crackers in case I feel really sick.

Today I had to go out and buy some snacks, like nuts and soreen at lunch as I've just been so starving. I am normally a bit hungrier once it gets colder in the winter but this just seems excessive.

Is this normal? I woke up at 3am this morning and had to have a couple of crackers otherwise I would have been sick, which was a first.

This is my first pregnancy so I do apologise if I'm worrying over nothing, but Googling told me I shouldn't be eating more than I did previously so I'm a bit concerned.
Thanks!

Trust your body. And take supplements. You may be craving some essential mineral. Try to make the snacks very nutritious - could you eat nuts, bananas, pasteurised cheese on the crackers? It'll settle down after a while. Don't worry.
And congratulations!

Franca123 · 06/12/2021 14:58

Normal.

stalkersaga · 06/12/2021 14:59

Totally, totally, totally normal.

I eat ALL THE THINGS in the first trimester, but mostly the bland carbs. It wears off for me by the second tri, as yours probably will too.

Thecazelets · 06/12/2021 15:01

Very, very normal in first trimester especially.

Wolowl · 06/12/2021 15:08

Oh thank goodness, everything you read online pointed to it being weird, but it's the only way I'm surviving at the moment!

I'm also not doing well with hot/overly flavorsome food so just trying to get by at the moment.

I am taking pregnancy vitamins and did have some blood tests recently which didn't indicate anything was amiss.

Yes I can definitely have something on the crackers, we do always have cheese and other bits. I've only got about 5 more days in the office over the next 2 weeks so need to get through them, when I'm wfh it's much easier to deal with.

Thank you!

normal. i kept waking up at 2am hungry for toast

Pamparam · 06/12/2021 15:48

V v v normal! Although try and eat a bit more
Protein/fat as loads of carbs makes it worse for me!

Luxembourgmama · 06/12/2021 15:50

Just eat. I gained 8kg I the first 3 months but then weight gain went slower and I lost it afterwards. Do whatever you can to feel good.

Change123today · 06/12/2021 15:55

I was the same!! If empty tummy the sickness was worse!! I used to nibble oat bites and flap jacks!!
I didn’t do this with my first - was very sick for nine months in and out of hospital. Second time around learnt that I just had to keep eating to keep the sickness at bay - didnt always work and still ended up with a few hospital visits! But definitely a lot better just trying to keep something in my stomach!!

Change123today · 06/12/2021 15:55

Toast was never an option as the smell made me sick Grin

Totalwasteofpaper · 06/12/2021 15:56

Totally normal and fine.

I was very off certain foods and basically wanted to eat little and often.
I ate a lot of buttered toast with ham slices, plain biscuits, cereal, OJ, wine gums and satsumas in first trimester. Also cheese and crackers

I ate whatever I wanted despite being overweight throughout I am now 27 weeks and +4kg

Somerandomgirl · 06/12/2021 20:19

Normal, unfortunately i have it with the pregnancy too.. (didnt eat at all with first...) ...and still the same near 27 weeks now....hungry even qhen i sleep..i hate it lol... x

User0ne · 06/12/2021 20:54

I did the same for all 3 pregnancies and had most my weight gain in the first trimester. Eating was the only thing that stopped me feeling sick

Furmummy · 06/12/2021 21:36

I could have written that but my snacks were much less healthy! I put on 1 stone in first trimester! Now am 16 weeks and my appetite back to normal -if anything feel full quite a lot - it does get better, but just eat your way through it .. I had daily cereal at 4am, second breakfast at 8am … I never stopped xx

Wolowl · 07/12/2021 09:13

Thank you all! That is all much more reassuring.

Any recommendations about what to drink, I can't drink tea anymore (my 1 cup a day!), even decaf makes me throw up. The water has started tasting funny when it never did before as does my lovely peppermint tea which is normally my favourite.

I did find ginger cordial was working, especially having it warm, but after immediately throwing it up this morning I'm not so sure. Everything seems to taste horrible, plus it's so cold I'm really wanting hot drinks but nothing seems to be working.

I was super hungry weeks 5-11. Ate everything! Especially crumpets and marmite 🤣. And crisps and apples. Now 14 weeks and appetite is thankfully back to normal.

I really went off hot drinks too. The only one I could manage was hot lemon (about a quarter of a lemon squeezed into boiling water).

Porridgeislife · 07/12/2021 10:15

I’m both nauseous and super hungry at 9 weeks.

Hot chocolate and hot Horlicks both seem to help settle my stomach. Haven’t had coffee or tea for weeks. Peppermint tea tastes urgh.

I’ve been eating lots of Weetabix, bananas, cheese on crackers, toast with peanut butter or marmite, sometimes nuts. All main meals need to involve rice for some reason, eg I have baked chicken and veg with a side of rice which is not something I’d do pre-pregnancy.

Porridgeislife · 07/12/2021 10:17

Also I’ve complete gone off anything tomato based or spicy. Pre pregnancy we used to cook both a lot for dinner.

Somerandomgirl · 08/12/2021 08:02

No idea about drinks, to me everything tastes horrible too most of the time... have to test what u can stand... squash tastes horrible to me, coffee tastes like tea.... could only have cappuccino at the beginning... and just water..cause doesnt leave aftertaste at least

Fupoffyagrasshole · 08/12/2021 08:08

I had a pile of cereal bars beside the bed 😂 so when I woke at night hungry I had a snack and didn’t even have to get up

stalkersaga · 08/12/2021 08:10

I got out of bed in the middle of the night a few times to make toast when I was pregnant.

TheBestSpoon · 08/12/2021 08:16

@Fupoffyagrasshole, I had a packet of cream crackers for the same reason!

@Wolowl, it's totally normal to eat more and favour the carbs. For some reason, my craving this time around has been toasted teacakes with lashings of Flora! As everyone else has said, listen to your body and you'll probably find it wears off soon. In my first pregnancy I was quite strict about not eating too much - with this one I've just had what I fancied, and at 24 weeks I weigh exactly the same as I did last time. Really wish I hadn't worried last time - the weight fell off with breastfeeding and I ended up at my lowest adult weight while DS1 was a baby. Do what you need to do to feel ok!

Drink wise, I found that fizzy drinks helped in moderation - one can of Diet Coke a day really settled my stomach, oddly. Any more, and it made it worse...

Thank you all!
