Last Saturday 16w5days pregnant I went for a gender scan to baby bond . 5 mins in sonographer turns tv off for around 10 mins and informs me there are issues with baby that need addressed . Firstly it was difficult to visualise stomach , then cord insertion was unclear and difficult to visualise . The left renal pelvis is dilated or has a cyst measuring 13mm . The right renal pelvis was 6mm . The bladder appeared dilated to 14mm and did not reduce during the scan time . I was not able to find out the gender and have instead come away with extreme anxiety and stress . If someone else has had similar experience please shed some light on the situation for me . I will not see anyone until next week .

I’m sorry you’re going through this period of uncertainty and worry. I hope you get some reassurance next week.

Babyvenusplant · 04/12/2021 17:03

Did you have a routine 12 week scan? Was everything looking OK on that one?

Sdoc16 · 04/12/2021 19:36

Hi , yes everything was fine at my 12 week scan

I had a scan at a private clinic, they found things ‘wrong’ and I was really really worried. I went in for a scan at hospital and they weren’t at all concerned. It’s good you’re getting checked again. I hope it works out ok for you ❤️

You must be so worried I have no personal experience unfortunately but didn't want to read and run.

What's the plan going forward?

Offering a hand hold Thanks

I've just had a look at a couple of websites for these companies, and nowhere does it say its a doctor that is conducting your scan. You must be so worried, but speak to you midwife and try not to panic. There is such a long list of issues, especially after you 12 week hospital scan say everything was fine, its marketing me wonder if the sonographer knew what they were doing.

Starcaller · 04/12/2021 20:17

Babybond often use NHS sonographers. I had the same one for my private scan as my NHS 12-week one!

It's good you've been referred - hopefully it's nothing to be too worried about and another good look in a proper clinical setting can get to the bottom of it. Fingers crossed, OP.

Aranciata · 04/12/2021 21:04

I'm sorry you've had such a distressing experience.
Hard as it might be, wait to see what the hospital say next week about how serious the issues are, what they think could happen, can any resolve or if there is treatment.

If the issues are there now I expect they would also be visible at the 20 week scan so this gives you a bit of time to understand a bit better what's happening. I can imagine the wait is excruciating, just take it a day at a time until you are seen.

Like Starcaller, my private scans were carried out by the same sonographer who did my 12 week (and 20 week) NHS scans.

rathernotshare · 04/12/2021 21:42

Not the same but I have a private scan at 8 weeks pick up a giant cyst and now I'm having surgery at 15 weeks. Had I waited until the 12 week scan I'd have lost that head start on seeking treatment, but the same issue would've come up. Thinking of you xx

StarC · 04/12/2021 21:59

@rathernotshare I am in the exact same situation as you - cyst found at a private scan and then having it removed at 15wks. I hope it goes well for you!

rathernotshare · 04/12/2021 22:08

@StarC hope you are doing ok, I've found it horrendously stressful! Have you got a date? Mines on the 16th of this month I'm terrified but it has to be done

StarC · 04/12/2021 22:12

@rathernotshare You too! It's horrible, isn't it? But at least the private scan has allowed us to get things moving quickly. My consultant was really pleased about that. Still scary though. I'm thinking about it constantly!

It sounds like you're a bit ahead of me; I don't have a date yet. I really hope it works out for you.

bluetowers · 04/12/2021 22:28

That's so sad for you OP but do try wait now for your next scan. The sad reality is that if there are issues it's better to know now than only find out at the 20 week scan.

olivehater · 04/12/2021 22:36

A namechangeagain accusing a professional of not knowing what they are doing when you know nothing about them or the outcome is inappropriate.
Sonographers, not Drs, pick up abnormalities and pass them on to fetal medicine in regular nhs scans too. They pick out the needles in haystacks for specialist Drs to come and do the final diagnosis. They also do the majority of the training of Drs in the first place.

bluetowers · 05/12/2021 00:21

I'm not sure what qualifications baby bond sonographer would have. However, they must be qualified and must be doing these most days. The sonographer has given op a fair bit of info and been honest that they are concerned what they saw.
Hopefully it will work out ok but the sonographer was clearly concerned.
Scans are designed for these reasons
