Side sleeping when pregnant and hip pain

I'm at that stage of pregnancy now, second trimester, where I can no longer sleep on my back. I usually sleep on my sides and back.

I can only sleep on my sides and it's killing my hips.

Does anyone else get this ? I also wake up on my back sometimes and then start worrying about the baby. I immediately turn back on my side.

In my last pregnancy I had a massive pregnancy pillow, which I got it of in the end, as it took up the whole flat.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I've bought myself a small pregnancy pillow, but it doesn't really help. The larger one did actually help a bit. Buy was a faff to get in and out of etc.

Any recommendations appreciated !

I had the same thing where I’d wake up with my hips in a lot of pain from side sleeping (which I never had before pregnancy). Turned out we needed a new mattress! Our old one was spring and had been digging into me, whereas the memory foam one we have now is much better and I don’t wake up in pain anymore. Obviously I know mattresses aren’t cheap but just something to consider and if you think it might be the cause, a softer mattress topper might work?
I also wake up on my back occasionally (27 weeks pregnant) and I do worry a little but remember NHS and Tommy’s website say if you find you’ve done this don’t worry and just roll back onto your side. You could always get a wedge pillow to stop you falling back but I would try not to worry about it too much unless you’re actively starting out on your back and falling asleep like that.

I had the same problem with my hips. I put a spare duvet under the sheet to make the bed softer to sleep on and that has mad a big difference.

My physio told me to buy a topper. I was struggling to walk at 15 weeks and within 3 days all pain was gone, it’s only started aching again and I’m 36 weeks

I sleep on my side with a normal pillow between my knees. Chiropractor reccomended. It helps but the ache never goes away completely.

Memory foam mattress topper

Saved me!

I have a pure memory foam mattes. Tempur cloud. And it still happens. Maybe it's old ? It's 5 years old. It's like sleeping on a cloud, usually! Maybe I go in too far.

I second the pillow been the legs, I had spd and it was a life saver to keep the legs in line with the hips this way.

I had this, it's usually a sign that your hips are out of alignment when you sleep. I found a pregnancy pillow to high but if I folded my duvet over and put between my legs that really helped. Would also tuck a bit under my bump to support it.
Try getting yourself to antenatal Pilates or exercise class, my hip pain and sciatica got so much better after I started going . Hope you find something that helps

It's been 10 years since I was pregnant but I still remember this pain. The best thing I found was to lie with my hip on the softest pillow I could find and then have another between my thighs.

I had exactly this OP, and I bought a bb hugme pillow. Not cheap but I found a good deal and used my birthday vouchers. Well worth it! I experimented and found a way to wrap part of it under my belly to support the baby, another bit in between my knees keeping my hips even and a bit under my head - lying on side. It was a godsend.

PollyRae16 · 04/12/2021 19:44

I swear by my bbhugme pregnancy pillow. It's definitely a bit of an investment but was design by three chiropractors. The inside is like a kind of beanbag so it moulds around your body

Terriblecreature · 04/12/2021 19:46

I used a dreamgenii pillow and really recommend it. Isn't massive and also has a joined on bit for your back so you can't roll onto back. I used it with both pregnancies and my sister used after me. Still in great condition too x

Pillow between the knees stopped it for me. Was excruciating! But a normal pillow worked

Sunbeams09 · 04/12/2021 21:31

I had this exact issue! I had a long pillow that I put between my knees and up my body so I kind of cuddled the top of it which kept my back comfortable as well as my hips. It was huge but because it was just one long sausage I used to put it on top of our regular pillows during the day so it didn’t take up any extra space Smile
