Evening! First baby is due very soon and we have what we think are all of the essentials, but honestly, we have no idea.

What would you say are your top 3 (or more) newborn essential items?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for the ultimate baby essentials checklist, we’ve recently updated our newborn essentials article with the must-haves Mumsnetters think you can't live without when your baby arrives. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Somewhere to sleep - crib/basket/cot + mattress, 3/4 sheets and 2/3 cellular blankets.

Something to move around - sling/lie flat pushchair and group 0/isize car seat.

Something to wear - 7/8 new born baby grows with fold over mitts, 7/8 vests, 2/3 cardigans, hat.

2/3 packs of nappies, 3/4 packs of wipes.

Misc - in ear thermometer, sudocream, dummies (if using), burp cloths/muslins, tiny nail scissors.

Not essential but good to have: white noise machine, car seat blanket, bath support.

We coslept and DD was in the prams carrycot for naps (suitable for overnight sleeping) or on me in the sling (cmpa & silent reflux). We did buy a cot but she didn't use it until she was over 6 months old. So I wouldn't say it's an essential. You do need a moses basket or a carrycot suitable for overnight sleeping.

Clothes - vests, baby grows, hats, mittens. H&M do very useful wrap vests with poppers on the front. Great for newborns.

If breastfeeding- lansinoh nipple cream & breast pads. Also maternity pads. Nursing bra. Clothes you can breastfeed in for you (doesn't have to be nursing-specific). For me also nipple shields and a breast pump but not everyone needs that. If bottle feeding- formula, bottles, teats, steriliser.

A carseat and a pram or a sling.

Nappies. Cotton wool pads. Sudocrem.

Something to bathe baby in. You can use a sink.

For outside blankets and/or pramsuit especially if winter baby.
