Flowerbug1994 · 03/12/2021 10:10

Hi All am 13 weeks pregnant at the minute have had both jab so far before pregnancy and now am being offered a booster from 29th December when will be about 17 weeks. Am so unsure what to do. I have been trying to do my own research but keep just hitting the nhs encourages it but with no reasons or explanation. Has anyone found any good impartial research on it and have the links to share. It’s such a hard decision to try and make. Or does anyone have any good pros or cons to getting or not getting it am open to hearing for and againsts on this one
Thanks

I got both vaccines during pregnancy, because of the initial studies ages ago on the placental damage linked to still births from the mother having had coronavirus. These started in Ireland and other countries started their own studies. I was nervous about having it and did a lot of research on google scholar.

I had my second vaccine at 24 weeks, so I'm not eligible for the booster as it's too soon. With the latest studies coming out of Israel www.google.co.uk/amp/s/m.jpost.com/health-and-wellness/coronavirus/covid-19-can-enter-placenta-cause-stillbirth-new-israeli-study-687386/amp I will get the booster when eligible.

This was actually what motivated me the most - I didn't think I'd be especially ill myself with coronavirus. However I now have gestational diabetes in my last trimester and I'm so glad I vaccinated because that could make me a lot higher risk

I had my booster at 25 weeks having had my first round just before getting pregnant. glad to have that additional protection in my final trimester esp as we go into winter.

6 weeks later still going well

IndigoJam · 03/12/2021 10:59

I had my vaccines whilst pregnant with twins at 11 and 19 weeks. They are currently keeping me awake at night. No issues

HW1989 · 03/12/2021 11:06

I had my booster 3 weeks ago at 20 weeks. I agree, a tough decision, but after hearing about so many complications and premature births from pregnant mothers getting covid I thought it best to go through with it ASAP.

BambiOnIce80 · 03/12/2021 11:13

I'd had both of my jabs before getting pregnant and opted to take the third jab when I was 29 weeks pregnant. Reasons for this was I work in the NHS and I used public transport to get there, so very high exposure risk. Team that with knowing plenty of double jabbed non-pregnant people who have still caught covid and been really poorly with it made me want to protect my baby from the still birth risk from covid. I'm 37 weeks now and haven't had any ill side effects from the jab. I'm even more relieved I took it now that the Omicron variant is ramping up.

Please get the booster. My friend is a midwife and she said it’s absolutely petrifying the number of very poorly pregnant women in hospital. Very very very tragically *trigger** her colleague lost one her mum’s to covid. The baby was born by emergency section. Unvaccinated.

The vaccine could have saved her.

Useyourname · 03/12/2021 11:18

Not got a link to hand, sorry, but in case it helps, I am a scientist, I worked with coronavirus before going on maternity leave. I had both doses of Moderna, one while pregnant and one while breastfeeding a newborn. Very happy baby asleep in my arms. I am not aware of any way the vaccine could be harmful to baby, or any reported issues, and I was very aware of how dangerous covid could be while pregnant, which is why I made the choice I did.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

PurpleDaisies · 03/12/2021 11:18

How long since you had your second dose?

I would think about immunity waning and how bad covid is in pregnancy, plus all the data that shows vaccination in pregnancy is safe and effective.

GinnyBee · 03/12/2021 12:00

I can't wait to get my booster! The potential to get covid is far scarier IMO than the jab.

4thtimethecharm · 03/12/2021 12:02

I would be keen on getting a booster. I have had two Astra Zeneca shots before my pregnancy, and being pregnant, I assume Pfizer would be the logical booster shot. I don't hear anything about mixing vaccines and pregnancy, however. Anyone come across anything that could ease my mind on this? Had I had previous Pfizers, I would not hesitate for a minute, and get my booster.

tierneytarny · 03/12/2021 12:34

I’ve just had my booster and it was given by a midwife (result!) at the vaccination centre. I had AZ for my first two doses and Pfizer for my booster. The midwife was thrilled I was there and said Pfizer would be the choice for boosters due to age anyway.

Third trimester covid seemed 100% more scary than the booster.

Suzi888 · 03/12/2021 12:38

I’m not pregnant, have no stats. My friend is a G.P and insists it’s safe to do so. It’s a personal choice, if I was pregnant I’d have it.

I had a terrible cough when I was pregnant (years ago, well before covid). Literally coughing constantly and it lasted for weeks, my ribs hurt, my stomach hurt, I was shattered and worried for my unborn child. I resisted googling, not sure if coughing affects them in there or not and there was nothing I could do and didn’t want to worry more than I was. It was unpleasant to say the least.

FinallySomeNormality · 03/12/2021 12:49

I had my first vaccine during pregnancy. 2nd when baby was 4 was old. All totally fine.

I was actually chomping at the bit to get the vaccine when I was pregnant but for the majority of my pregnancy pregnant ladies were not allowed to get it - then the guidance changed and we could but then I had to wait until my age group came round which took a while. I was incredibly careful at this time as pregnant women are more likely to require ICU and may have babies earlier etc. the risks thoroughly outweighed the risks of me taking the vaccine.

Remember there is also a lot of data about vaccine in pregnancy now and as far as I'm aware no negatives.

irishfarmer · 03/12/2021 15:41

I'll be going for my booster when I'm offered it, which should be soon. I'm 6 weeks pregnant.

Flowerbug1994 · 03/12/2021 15:57

Thanks for all your replies and links ladies. I think am going to book it now. The risks of getting Covid are a lot more serious than the risks from the jab x

I’m 24 weeks pregnant and desperately awaiting my booster. Had first vaccine before conception, 2nd vaccine at 6 weeks pregnant.

It’s not so much whether you’d be ok with Covid or not, it’s about the potential of Covid causing fatal blood clots within the placenta that worries me. I’ve heard in some cases, pregnant women with Covid are being given blood thinner injections as a precaution. I just wouldn’t want to risk my baby by refusing the vaccine.

JustOneMoreStep · 03/12/2021 16:07

No links to studies that I can share but I had my booster at 14 weeks pregnant and baby still seems to be happy 3 weeks on. My pregnancy is IVF and the clinic advised my to have the original jabs during treatment which I did. I gave them a call for advise re. Booster and they strong advised to go ahead with it. Lots of data on Mums and babies being very sick (or stillborn) if getting covid, so whilst it was a big decision for me, the risk of the illness was too high to not go ahead with the jab. Original 2 jabs were Pfizer and booster was moderna.

badalmond · 03/12/2021 16:15

I had my booster (Pfizer) on Tuesday at 22 weeks pregnant. Side effects were much less than first two doses I had just before becoming pregnant. Arm very slightly tender, cleared up within 48 hours. Baby is as active as ever.

Really glad of the extra protection as cases are going through the roof here.

Flowerbug1994 · 03/12/2021 16:42

Thanks I had 2 Oxford jabs prior to getting pregnant had first before they was pulled in under 30’s was completely fine off both no side effects just tender arm. Going to speak to midwife or GP about what I will be offered this time x

I had my first dose at 14 weeks & second dose at 22 weeks. DS is now 3 weeks old & fit as a fiddle! Knowing I was protecting myself & him during pregnancy was so reassuring.

ActonBell · 03/12/2021 19:20

Have you seen the RCOG info @Flowerbug1994?
They have a very detailed report here and other more digested info on their website: www.rcog.org.uk/globalassets/documents/guidelines/2021-11-02-coronavirus-covid-19-infection-in-pregnancy-v14.1.pdf

I had first dose pre-pregnancy, second at 11.5 weeks and booster this week at 37 weeks (higher risk due to gestational diabetes).
I’m confident on the basis of the evidence available that the benefits outweigh any risks.

abbs1 · 03/12/2021 19:22

I had both AZ jabs before getting pregnant. I was very nervous about the booster but I chatted to mums in my group who are due in March and many of them have had the booster (Pfizer) and baby is doing fine so I got mine last week at 25 weeks after discussing with my midwife. Baby is all fine and happy so far.

ActonBell · 03/12/2021 19:23

And I would think you will be offered the Pfizer. I’m only aware of research generally on mixing vaccines which shows it is fine - I’m not sure about specifically in pregnancy but I don’t think the mechanism of the vaccine is affected by pregnancy so I can’t see why there would be any difference if mixing is fine in general.

I have had three Pfizer. When I turned up for my booster they originally sent me to a Moderna desk but then redirected me to a Pfizer one as they said that’s the preferred vaccine for pregnant women and I’d already had two without any significant side effects. That’s not to say there would have been any problem with the Moderna.

I've just had my booster at 24 weeks.

Everyone has advised me that it's better to get the booster jab then be pregnant with covid so I've just followed the guidance of midwife and GP Smile
