Hey ladies. I’m 5 weeks pregnant and 23(first child) and just want to know things to avoid and can eat as well as vitamins whilst I’m waiting for my referral. I think I’ve gotten to the stage where I’m paranoid about what I eat and scared if I’m harming the baby. Would love tips from experienced mums or anyone who knows about the first trimester and how they got through it. I also have this huge scare of miscarrying and wants some help to calm those nerves about it

Congratulations!!! I’m by no means an expert (FTM myself) but totally get the anxiety so would say:

  1. It’s very difficult for you to harm your baby. Most miscarriages are sadly caused by chromosomes, not by anything the mother has done, so try to keep that in mind and don’t beat yourself up too much!
  1. For food and drink, only use NHS advice. So much stuff you think you can’t have is based on countries with lower food safety standards, I.e. they make a massive deal out of eggs in some countries but runny lion stamped eggs are fine. You’ll find you can eat so much more based on the NHS advice!
  1. On vitamins, take folic acid and Vitamin D, and avoid multivitamins containing Vitamin A, there are loads of pregnancy specific vitamins. But the brutal truth is the baby will take what it needs from you, hence you can often feel like crap while the baby is absolutely thriving!

Congrats again and feel free to message at any point if you want to speak to someone in a similar position!

Thank you so much for this!! This was very reassuring for me. This was something I really needed to hear and it did calm down the nerves of me harming the baby. Thank you for the advice about the vitamins I’m definitely going to purchase a few and read some stuff on the NHS website. Thank you so much and I’d love to message you sometime Smile

Yes as above, look on the nhs website - there’s lots of information on there. Main foods to avoid are raw/undercooked/cured meat and fish, some soft cheeses and pate and too much caffeine.

I always check the nhs website as you’ll find lots of random stuff on the internet. Just make sure any vitamins are specifically for pregnancy or else check that they don’t contain vitamin a. The only ones you really really should take are vitamin d and folic acid.
