Hi
I am 6 months pregnant and every 10 to 14 days have these 'attacks' so to speak. It started when I was 10 weeks pregnant and the first felt like a heart attack. I spoke to my midwife and she said it sounds like panic attacks and I was referred to occupational health for breathing exercises, however they dont seem to help and the cyclical, physical symptoms feel too routined now if that makes sense? I'm more than happy to be told it is a panic attack but feel it's odd that they happen so often with no fear or reason to panic.

For example, the pain will start in my lower abdomen like a tightening or pulling. Then in my upper back as though I cant stretch or get air in, I stand up as its uncomfortable and the pain travels in waves from top of my back / body to the bottom with difficulty breathing. I feel I have no room to breathe and my chest feels heavy and I cant get air in. I try slow breathing exercises to try and stay calm and end up on all fours as the pain in my back and bump is unbearable. It feels as though my chest, bump and back are suffocating me and I cant get air in. The episodes happen every 10 to 14 days, usually in the middle of the night and I wake up with the pain or i could be sat watching tv etc. No reason to panic, not overly stressed etc. After 20 to 30 mins, the waves of pain ease but I feel I have been kicked and hit by a bus.

Any insights and how to manage would be helpful. The OHT gave me leaflets on self care and breathing, but I cant see a pattern apart from the regular instances these take place.

I'm no expert, but this doesn't sound like a panic attack to me (how could it be, if it wakes you up?). I'd push to be listened to, if I were you.

That is not a panic attack- I've suffered with them for several years x
I would 100% be pushing for a full check up and to determine what is causing that x
That sounds really distressing I'm sorry you're going through that x

I have also have had panic attack for many many years and once after a ivf egg-puncture I had something that sounds quite similar. It was caused by physical pain and I would say that initially it was more my body responding (also struggling with breathing) than my mind if that makes sense. At first I stayed calm as my body seemed to have an extreme reaction but after a while I started to panic because of the way my body was feeling and every thing became even worse. I was checked over in hospital and apart from the pain nothing was found and it was also described as a panic attack. You may have something similar. It may be that your body is responding strongly to a pain impulse (perhaps Braxton Hicks or ligament pain) and has a panic reaction. Before I was pregnant I also had similar episodes with IBS. I think we talk about panic attacks as being completely in the mind but your body also responds to pain without you being in control of it. I would say that if the breathing exercise don't help you need to go back and look at what starts the pain in the first place. If it is BH or ligament pain there is not much you can do. Apart from staying calm and 'riding it out'. It must be very stressful for you. Good luck!

This 100% sounds like pleuritic pain to me. Look up pleurisy. I don't know if it's more common in pregnancy but wouldn't surprise me. I have had them my whole life and used to call them "mini heart attacks". Really, they have nothing to do with the heart. They are seriously scary but honestly they aren't really harmful.
