Is anyone else really anxious with previous loses or problems that they book regular private scans??
I'm worried that they're not healthy but then I'm worried when any my symptoms etc disappear.
Also please don't comment if you haven't been through it or don't understand because I don't appreciate the judgement, i'm just looking for some positive advice.
Thanks

The scans won’t harm the baby at all. So if it works for you and you can afford it it’s your choice to book them.

I think the trouble is with them, they only reassure you in that moment and then you worry again, if you see what I mean?

But as you get on in weeks and pass different milestones you will be less anxious, i promise.

Doodledeedum · 30/11/2021 22:40

I've already decided that if I get pregnant again ( after two MMC) I'm getting a scan at 6/8/10 weeks and then 12 with nhs if I get that far and one after that before a dating scan.

Do what you need to do for you x

I ended up having scans almost fortnightly between 6 and 16 weeks, and have been almost monthly thereafter (high-risk, so through my hospital). The clinicians reassured me that it was safe to do so - I wouldn't worry about any health risks from the scans so long as you aren't having one every day or so.

The downside, I suppose, is that the feeling of reassurance doesn't last all that long, so if reassurance is the main reason for having the scans you might want to consider adding in some other coping strategies as well. Maybe ask about speaking with a psychologist about anxiety management? There are often psychologists attached to antenatal services, sometimes specialising in pregnancy after loss. I've found it really helped me to speak with someone about how I was feeling.

Brunilde · 30/11/2021 23:02

I did, I had quite a few. It definitely helped me manage the anxiety. Once I could like him move though I was a lot more reassured and didn't feel the need to.

Hey I've had 4 losses and I'm now 6 weeks pregnant. I'm having 2 scans per week and the 7 day wait is too hard! Rather than make me anxious, it's helping me enormously xx

It's absolutely devastating isn't it, it's a horrible thing, I'm 13 weeks now but I thought I'd start to feel more "safe" but I just don't, it's really hard 100%.

@Lauras1 I adored being pregnant both times but I know if it happens again, I'm going to be on edge the whole time. Honestly as mentioned do what u need to do and if there is therapy available make use of it x

Sleepyquest · 01/12/2021 09:56

@Lauras1 if it makes you feel better and you can afford it, then go for it. Once you start feeling baby move, you get the reassurance from that. You have a few more weeks to go before the kicks come so do what you need to do Smile

babyboybluex · 01/12/2021 10:52

After my first son (textbook pregnancy) I never thought I'd be one for booking private scans where possible. We are expecting baby two and have had quite a few scans due to a Hematoma and anxiousness from a chemical pregnancy. It helps massively and I think you have to do what's right for you Flowers

One scan, 50 scans... who cares! Congratulations x

Kaw10 · 01/12/2021 12:16

@Rachae if I may ask, are you paying for two private scans per week? The NHS isn't that generous, right? Grin
Here in Germany private scans like Window to the Womb and "see your baby in 4d and get a dvd" etc are banned. Scans are only for medical reasons.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 12:18

@Kaw10 really? That’s interesting! I didn’t know that.

Rachae · 01/12/2021 12:26

Hey @kaw10 so I've got weekly scans with my fertility centre but I think this week's might be the last one (fingers crossed all going well). I've had bleeding and they've found a very small haematoma so it needs monitoring. I'm paying for the other private scan.

If it comes to it, I'm happy to pay for 2 per week. I know it could sound like overboard.. but a MMC is devastating and even a few days of knowing earlier that the heart has stopped or its stopped growing, makes all the difference to my mental health xx

Applecrumble24 · 01/12/2021 12:29

I had a mmc last pregnancy.
I’m now 31 weeks and I’ve had a scan at 6 weeks, one at 11 due to bleeding, nhs one at 12, gender scan at 16, nhs at 20, 4d one at 26 and I’ve got an nhs growth scan at 34 weeks.
I’ve also got a home Doppler to hear the heartbeat but I found once I could feel movement, I didn’t really need to use it.

Believe it or not, I am not an anxious person normally!
You do whatever you need to do Smile

There's the link but you'll have to apply Google translate to it! Grin Grin

Thanks! Year, my rusty German won’t stretch to deciphering that Grin

Kaw10 · 01/12/2021 12:35

@Rachae absolutely, in cases like bleeding or other issues they would scan as often as needed, thank goodness. I'm pretty sure many doctors could also find a reason to scan.Wink It's just the "baby viewing" scans for purposes of getting a photo or video that are banned.

Rosiiiiie · 01/12/2021 12:38

Oh god I’m a scan addict!! I had one every 2 weeks until approx 16 weeks. Then I dropped to one every month. I have my last scan next week at 29 weeks. I will try to relax afterwards and just wait for birth. My DP thinks I’m crazy but I don’t care.

Rachae · 01/12/2021 12:59

Since I have so many of you who've had scans on here...

Did any measure a bit behind and catch up?

Mine measured 3.4mm at 6 weeks 1 day. The guidelines is 4mm by 6 weeks, then a 1mm increase per day. (Heart beat seen)

BUT... I know I ovulated a day later in my cycle... So it could only be 0.6mm behind. Worst case, it's 1.6mm behind.

What you do you think? The clinic said there was a big tolerance so early and not to worry... Xx

Fleur405 · 01/12/2021 14:16

I am having scans every two weeks with a consultant. I actually discussed with her the possibility of reducing them because to be honest it just makes my anxiety worse - that’s just me though.
