Has anyone ever just used the Milton tablets and never a steriliser? How did you find it? I just don’t want too much equipment in the kitchen.

Are you planning to breastfeed or formula? If you mostly bf, and only have to sterilise occasionally then it would be fine. If you bottle feeding and have stuff to sterilise every day, having a tub full of water and steriliser solution sat in your kitchen for 6 hours a time will be more in the way then a steriliser that can be used then put away.

I did and it was great. The hot steriliser was faffy and annoying. Milton tablets worked for me. That was over a decade ago so I'm unsure if it's considered ok to do so now, but my child is now 12 and perfectly fine.

Thanks for replies am planning to mix feed. I’ve only bought 3 bottles for now.

I used a cold water steriliser for about 8 months then got given a steam one. Much preferred the cold water one as you could just dump a new bottle in when you took one out without having to faff about putting water in the bottom and spreading bits out and turning it on etc. And sooo much cheaper to buy

Danikm151 · 24/11/2021 15:25

I didn't get the milton tub I just used a bucket and put a plate over to keep the items in the solution.
I did have the electric steriliser too but you can get microwave versions that shouldn't take too much room.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 24/11/2021 15:29

I used steam with my first and cold water with my second.
Steam is faffy because you have to descale it all the time or it stinks and wait ages for it to cool before you can touch the bottles.
The cold water one is better imo as all you have to do is change the water daily and after 15 mins it's set for 24 hours plus bottles only take 25 mins to sterilise. I just throw them in as I do the dishes throughout the day and having a tiny kitchen, the bucket dosent take up much space.

I did, DD was FF so got through loads of bottles and the cold water steriliser was fab.

Had a lidded storage tub, the Wham ones they sell in the supermarket

www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/wham-storage-box-15l-x4

In the morning when doing the washing up I'd give it a clean with soapy water along with the bottles then fill it with cold water and a tablet. Dump in any washed up bottles and just leave them in there. They have to be in the water for 20 minutes to be sterilised, after that they can be taken out as needed throughout the day.

It was incredibly easy. I'd throw dummy's or teething toys in there too when she had those.

Plus cold water tends to be cheaper as at £2.40 for 40 tablets plus £15 for the bucket is about £39 for a year and you'll be hard pushed to get a decent steam steriliser for that cost.
Also forgot to mention that pretty much anything can go in a cold water steriliser e.g. dummies, teethers that can't go in steam ones

stormelf · 28/11/2021 00:12

I've used the cold water steriliser for both my children and will be using it for baby 3 once she's here. It's so easy to put everything in tub and forget about it until you need it. It also means you aren't reliant on electricity so can place it wherever is more convenient. With DD we didn't have a microwave so only option was a steam steriliser which would require being near a plug socket or cold water.

As pp has mentioned the tablets are very reasonably priced and are often on offer places. Asda had them on offer for £2 for 40 a while back so I was ordering a box with each of my weekly deliveries and now have enough for the first seven months.

Steam is a pain and you have to descale it - that's what I had with my first. I've gotten a Milton tub this time after reading lots of threads here!!! I would have gotten a UV one if I had unlimited cash.

I breastfeed but may pump or combo feed.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 28/11/2021 06:21

I just used a new metal stockpot pan and it sat on the back ring of the hob (not turned on, obviously). But it stopped the kitchen feeling cluttered with extra tubs or buckets and meant the only outlay was the tablets.

It worked much easier than the machine for me.

Ethelswith · 28/11/2021 07:26

Mainly BF - used Milton in cold water when I needed to (the handpump, mainly)

Very straightforward.

Lulu1919 · 28/11/2021 07:34

It's how we sterilised bottle teats and dummy...we used the playtex bottles so no actual bottle to sterilise ...this was over 25 years ago but both daughters and fine healthy and FABULOUS !!!

Booksandwine80 · 28/11/2021 08:06

I did cold sterilising with DD 4 years ago. So easy, I bought the proper milton bucket with the handle and still use it now to store pet food in Grin
