Spotting after an orgasm

Hi,

I am 11 weeks today. My partner and I have been trying not to have sex since we found out we were pregnant. I struggled with infertility so just didn’t want to put a single foot wrong. Anyway one thing led to another and I had an orgasm (non-penetrative). I was fine yesterday but today I found a small brown stain on my underwear. When I wipe there is no brown. I am very worried, my scan is next week but wondering if I should go in to EPU?

Hello!

I'm pretty sure if it's brown they won't be concerned, it's normally just red fresh blood but speak to your midwife for reassurance if needed :)

@growingmybaby thank you. It was definitely brown and I still don’t know how it got there because when I wipe its clear. I was going to call and go to EPU but I’ll speak to my midwife next week when I go to my scan. Hopefully my scan is okay 😞.

Sex is considered safe in a normal pregnancy, it's so so so unlikely that you caused anything to happen to your baby, they are so protected in there. Spotting after sex (or sexual activity) isn't unusual either - in fact it was one of the first questions my midwife asked when I rang up concerned about spotting. If you have a phone number for your midwife or a maternity advice line in your area then you could give them a ring to reassure yourself.

I only say 'so so so unlikely' because I'm always hesitant to say things like 'impossible' and 'never', but if there were risks associated with having sex in pregnancy then we would be advised against it.

Spotting after sex in pregnancy is considered normal I believe. There is more blood flow to the cervix when you're pregnant so sex is much more likely to cause spotting than normal. You'll almost certainly be fine.

@mumofmunchkin @kalidasa thank you very much that is reassuring. I have my 12 week scan next week, so decided against calling gp/midwife and panicking.

An update to this incase anyone has a similar experience and are worried. I had my 12 week scan and baby is good.
