I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi All,
Yesterday was very long and draining. Unfortunately my results didnt come back yesterday. They were meant to be back within 2-3 hours of both scans but after waiting 8 hours the consultant sent me home with ongoing injections etc and said they will call me today with the results🤞I really hope I get a call as its been one long emotional and stressful week but I'm just glad to be home with my husband and little boy.

Melleebacca · 15/01/2022 17:12

@abbs1 that sounds really stressful. Is HG rearing it’s head with all the stress? I’m thinking of you.

@BFPDec21 so glad to hear you’re having some relative “good” days. Hopefully you continue to improve.

@FateHasRedesignedMost no weird cravings here. I suffer most from having absolutely no food or cravings that appeal. I’ve accidentally lost a kg in the last week or so with my food aversions. I spend some time every day watching food prep videos on Instagram and figuring out what things I’m going to make when the baby comes. I’m excited for cheesecake, and soups, and brownies (can’t eat sweets while pregnant. Love sweets usually).

@LucindaE the hot salsa is really helping. It doesn’t feel spicy at all, so I’m not sure if that’s hormones or just the manufacturer being gentle with the spices. I’m eating it with toasted plain pita bread, and even though it’s essentially just another form of tomato on toast, it’s nice to have some variation.

7Worfs · 15/01/2022 17:40

I’m ready to accept meds (I’m the poster who didn’t medicate first pregnancy and was hesitant a few days ago).

Do I call 111 tomorrow, or GP on Monday?
Midwives haven’t seen me yet so I figure they are not an option.

I really wanted to soldier on this pregnancy as well, but with a toddler and my current job I just can’t… been lying down, crying and vomiting today. Can’t hold water down.

abbs1 · 15/01/2022 18:39

@Melleebacca I finally got the results through and thankfully no clot has been found in my lungs so I'm very relieved. They also did scans on my heart and they're all fine.
The consultant wants to do other invetigstion and tests but I can do this via the GP and referrals to different hospital specialists so I'm ok to be home now thank goodness and nothing very serious has been found.
HG has kept away thankfully I just feel so exhausted from everything this week so I'm going to relax as much as I can.
Baby is still keeping me on my toes. Had 30mins of braxton hicks but its all settled down now so hopefully no more surprises before shes born in a few weeks🤞

I hope youre doing ok. 🤗 how many weeks are you? Im just over 32.

Melleebacca · 15/01/2022 18:40

@7Worfs get an appt with your GP asap. If you are barely keeping anything liquids in and your pee is really dark, then go to A&E. But I think with the current pandemic, an appt with your GP is the first port of call. You will likely be given one of the weaker meds, like cyclizine, these are generally antihistamines that are perfectly safe. If you don’t feel any relief or they stop working in a few days, go back, get stronger ones. The meds that carry the highest risk of issues (albeit still minimal in the scheme of things) are often last resort meds, and also the strongest ones.
Some people also get some relief from B6, so that might be something you can get from a pharmacy while you wait for an appt.
Keep resting, keep up your fluids and get support for the toddler and work at least for this week while you figure out the best meds for your body. Good luck.

Melleebacca · 15/01/2022 18:43

@abbs1 I’m 20wks, my anatomy scan is tomorrow and I’m trying to keep from thinking the worst. Baby is incredibly active, so there’s no signs anything is wrong, just past history of a second trimester loss.
I’m so relieved that it’s not the worst case scenario for you. Please enjoy all the rest you can get. The Braxton Hicks were possibly bought on by the stress, so hopefully go away as you calm down.

7Worfs · 15/01/2022 18:50

@Melleebacca thank you, thank you!

Oh bless you. Wishing you all the best of luck for tomorrow. Let me know how it goes. 🤗
I've got a growth scan Tuesday to see how baby is doing and seeing the consultant to discuss results so thats good. I havent seen her on the scan for 10 weeks. This was when my little boy stopped growing so hopefully shes still gaining.

Im looking forward to getting my little boy off to bed and relaxing. The braxton hicks have stopped for now so thats good. I dont need premature labour now after everything this week 🙈

LucindaE · 15/01/2022 19:55

7Worfs I so agree with Mellekbacca Make an appointment with the GP asap on Monday, emphasizing how severe it is. However, if you have been unable to retain any liquids for over 24 hours, do contact emergency.
Melleebacca I can understand how traumatic a second tri loss must be, when first tri losses are so awful. It is bound to make you nervous. Our emphasizing that the odds are overwhelmingly on your side won't really help until you have the reassurance from the hospital. Thinking of you.
abbs1 Generally good news.
BFPDec2021 I'm glad it went OK. When did you say the scan was, over the weekend? All luck for it.
Apologies for anyone rudely overlooked.

Easymeasy · 15/01/2022 21:52

Hi everyone,

I saw somewhere that taking vitamin b6 with your prescribed medication (I'm on cyclizine) helps with the sickness. I got this and some ginger root tablets from holland and barrett's but it says do not take if pregnant on both and to consult your doctor.
I spoke to the dr who said that taking cyclizine with pre natal should be fine and not to worry about b6 or ginger root capsules. Does anyone have any information from experience?

abbs1 · 15/01/2022 22:47

@Easymeasy with this pregnancy I was prescribed xonvea after suffering so badly in previous pregnancy with my son. Xonvea has vitamin B6 in it which seems to have helped my sickness this time a lot. I would speak to your GP or midwife about it.

MrsJdot · 16/01/2022 00:52

Hi ladies! Just chipping in to share my experience again, I posted a few weeks ago when I was very ill with the nausea and vomiting, was then prescribed with Ondansetron which I was nervous to use.

I am now almost 16 weeks pregnant and I have tried to give up on the medication a few times, but after 13-15 hours of stopping the Ondansetron I start getting very nauseous, immediately the vomiting starts and I can’t keep any food down. I thought the vomiting would have stopped by now but no luck, and still salivating 24/7, wish I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Also been referred for prenatal depression as I just feel low and demotivated, can’t be bothered to do anything around the house, and now I am starting to get pelvic pain too!

Nursemommy · 16/01/2022 01:15

Hi everyone, I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have hyperemesis. I've been to hospital a couple of times one time admitted for 2 days the other time was nearly a week. I'm now on the second line of treatment.
The vomiting is still very much there and present most days. I have lost loads of weight and struggling to put any back on again. I've managed to go back to work after having 7 weeks off but I really struggle and I've still got 2+ ketones in my urine and am dehydrated on my meds. My skins so dry and I have dents in all my finger nails. Hyperemesis really is awful but super excited to meet my little baby. Xx

BFPDec21 · 16/01/2022 04:44

@abbs1 I'm really glad they've found no clots. I can imagine that's one less thing to worry about for now.

@Melleebacca good luck for your scan today.

@LucindaE Yes, I've had the scan now. Baby was all good which was a great reassurance. Unfortunately the sickness started up again today so it's been short lived relief.

@MrsJdot I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. HG has a massive impact on mental health, I've found myself much more anxious during pregnancy and really isolated at times. I'm glad you're getting referred to the relevant service. For the pelvic pain, could the local maternity unit see you to check you over?

@Nursemommy I'm sorry it's so horrible for you at the moment. I know what you mean about the skin dryness and nail dents, if you can would your DP be able to help with self care and pamper you a bit? Obviously that's only if you can stop being sick long enough to enjoy it.

Nursemommy · 16/01/2022 07:14

@BFPDec21 luckily I have an amazing husband who runs me baths, makes me dinners and holds back my hair when I'm sick. I've been working through the night but when I wake up from my sleep later I'm going to try a pamper session as long as I'm not being too sick. I've got some nice creams and face masks. My doctor said if it carries on he will prescribe me some cream too. How are you? Xx

PopGoesBang · 16/01/2022 11:57

Hi all.
I'm 10 weeks and having such a horrible day (we'll 5 days, but today is the tip
Of the iceberg) and feel so lost. I had HG in my last pregnancy too, but somehow this feels much worse.
I've just called my mum in tears. My dp has been amazing but it's one of those days where I know he is finding it hard too, and today I don't have any energy to try and make it ok or be positive.

I'm going to try and ready back over your posts, and remind myself the journey has its ups and downs.
Sorry for the ramble, just needed to let off somewhere.

abbs1 · 16/01/2022 12:36

@Popgoesbang I'm so sorry youre having such a rough time again with HG. Sometimes just having a good cry and talking to all of us who understands I find helps so much and gives relief. HG is so mentally as well as physically draining so keep reaching out here so we can support you.
I found esp in my first pregnancy this page got me through the toughest of days when I wanted to give up so many times everyone was so supportive and it helped so much.
Did you find in your last pregnancy there was a certain week you started feeling better? If was there was try and hold onto that and use that as a little goal so that it doesnt feel so overwhelming thinking about how long until baby arrives. I found sometimes I just set little goals of getting to the end of each week so I could tick it off the calendar and feel like I was making progress as the minutes, hours and days just felt like a lifetime.
What medication are you currently taking? Have you been able to get any IV fluids/medication or anything to help give you some relief?
Sending hugs 🤗

PopGoesBang · 16/01/2022 14:24

Thank you @abbs1.
Currently gone back to metoclopramide and prochloorperazine. Did have cyclizne too but found I was worse on that.
Need to get back in touch with the gp tomorrow, and see what I can try.

Haven't had any Iv yet this time, not sure how I went about that last time, trying all I can to keep sipping at water but pretty sure I'm no where near what I should be with it.

My mum came down and just hugged me while I cried some more, and as only mums can rallied DD and DP to get a few things sorted she knew would be fussing me but I wouldn't say.

It's so rubbish, but getting closer to seeing the scan and knowing it's all worth it - which of course it will be. I have an almost 9 year old to remind me - even if my memory is hazy of how I got through it then!

7Worfs · 16/01/2022 14:27

I’m much better today with liquids - I can’t stomach water at all, but today have managed lemonade and Granini nectar… it’s better than yesterday because I’m mostly in bed, but every time I get up the nausea hits and I start weeping.
I hope I get meds tomorrow.

LucindaE · 16/01/2022 19:55

Welcome to Easymeasy, PopGoesBang and Nursemommy. Sorry that you are suffering.
PopGoesBang Ten weeks is often the worst time for sufferers. I am glad your mother came over. It is disappointing to get it agan, but at least you are a lot more knowlegeable as a veteran. Did you say that combination helped you a lot last time? There is lots of support on this thread.
Easymeasy I wouldn't worry aout the label. Lots of GP's prescribe the vitamin for t he sickness, and as others say, it's in Xonvea, which was specifically designed for pregnancy sickness. Some on here have tried those ginger root tablets. I think a couple found them helpful, which is interesting, as nobody finds the conventional ginger biscuits recommendations of any use at all!
Nursemommy Sorry things are so hard. I am glad your OH is supportive. It must be very hard doing nursing when suffering from this scouge. Did you go back on easier hours or duties or something?
As you are a nurse, you may not fnd my normal spiel informative, but I'll include it fo ryou and Easymeasy just in case.. Sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
buttercuplizzy Welcome. I am glad you have got pre-emptive meds. There is lots of support on here. Some find that they escape suffering badly in some pregnancies after ones with bad Hyperemesis. As you are a veteran, you dont need my normal spiel above about kesostix, flat coke and anti acids.
MrsJdot Many on here improve a while after week sixteen, often up to week twenty. In fact, I have heard of lots of sufferers from normal pregnancy sickness who don't improve until after week sixteen, so don't despair. I am glad the meds are anyway helping a bit.Can they add or replace meds to improve things? Sorry to hear of the pre-natal depression. Certainly, don't try and brave it out alone. Everyone is very supportive on here.
abbs1 and BFPDec2021 Great advice as ever. BFPDec2021* I am so glad scan results were good, anyway.
7Worfs Cheering you on until you can get meds.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
I hope all is well with Melleebacca.

PopGoesBang · 16/01/2022 21:10

@LucindaE thank you. I feel a little more composed now, compared to earlier. And have already felt the wonderful support from you all.

In my last pregnancy I just had the metoclopramide - looking back now I'm not sure I let the professionals know how bad things were. It was a complicated pregnancy, I had a lot of home stress and also an issue with my kidney which almost required a stent. And I'm fairly sure I just thought everyone experienced something similar.

I'm in a much different home situation now, and have wonderful support.
I will be talking to the gp again tomorrow and seeing what the next steps are. It's been 5 rough days (bed bound and not being able to hold anything in until the evening) where as before now, there would be tough moments to a day but I could function far better. Perhaps it is that 10 week blip.

Thank you for being so welcoming. As I'm sure you all know, support is worth its weight in gold.

I'm slowly going over previous posts and hope every one has ok nights and a gentle start to the new week.

BFPDec21 · 17/01/2022 01:32

@Nursemommy sounds like you have a lovely supportive DH which helps. Hopefully you got a bit of a pamper today.

I've not had a great day but it's probably because I've pushed myself a bit too much this weekend by getting out of bed and being downstairs more to be a little more present. Back to trying to rest in bed again.

Sending my well wishes to you all, especially those who are going to be speaking to their GP this week. Good luck!

Melleebacca · 17/01/2022 07:08

Sorry, I’m cranky here today. Scan went well, everything looks good. The sonographer wasn’t as kind as my last one, so didn’t give me as much as reassurance as I would’ve liked. Baby is consistently measuring 21w3d, although I’m only 20w1d based on LMP dates. Placenta is in the back instead of the front which I prefer. I’m not getting much sleep with the constant kicks. I got told off for not having a full enough bladder, but I’m hideously constipated and my bladder felt like it would explode. Plus it’s 31deg today, with no breeze, so cranky all around.

I’m sorry to hear about all the newcomers, will try and reply when I’m in a better mental space. Xx

buntywindermere · 17/01/2022 11:43

Hi all, a scan has showed my 8 week old baby to be still measuring at 6 weeks. I'm confident with my dates so this is not good news for us. HG still appalling so really struggling. Please pray for us. I will likely not be checking in here as I wait out the inevitable, all the best to you all in your pregnancies. Thanks hopefully I'll be back again later this year, as this third baby was very very much wanted. They're always worth the HG.

7Worfs · 17/01/2022 11:56

Flowers bunty I’m new to this thread, sending you strength
