I'm so confused

Moses basket
Next 2 me sleeper crib
Actual crib
Cot
Sleepyhead

It's a minefield. What's the best option? Also coat effective.

I see some people put a sleepyhead in a cot is that a good option so they are already used to their cot?

I want to avoid co sleeping as much as possible, been there done that!

Sleepyhead in a cot is not advised as its a big SIDS risk. Sleepyheads are only advised for supervised daytime naps. For best advice, look up the Lullaby Trust. www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/

You need to think about your house to decide. Baby needs to be in the same room as you for all sleeps until at least 6 months. So for downstairs naps, we have a moses basket but you could have a sleepyhead or use your pram bassinet.

For upstairs, our bedroom wouldn't fit in a cot, so we have a next to me. Our DD will move into her own cot after 6 months when she goes into her own room. But if you have space, you could put baby straight into the cot in your room and just move the whole thing when the baby goes into their own room. This would also save money. You could also just move your moses basket up and down stairs each morning / evening. Beware though, if you have a big baby, they often grow out of moses baskets before 6 months.

I personally loved the next to me, as i could drop the side down on a morning and it was easy to get her in and out. You can pick them up second hand, but you must always have a brand new mattress, again to reduce SIDS risk. They covered safe sleeping on our antenatal NCT class, if you have these coming up.

We had a next to me which was a godsend and lasted her until she went in to her own room. We used the carrycot from the pram for daytime sleeping in the living room, cot when she went in to her own room. Sleepyheads aren't safe as they can cause baby to overheat

We use next to me crib for bedtime sleeping, Moses basket on the landing for when I need to put him down upstairs (if I’m having a shower or bathing the toddler), and bouncer chair (nuna leaf) for daytime naps downstairs. He’ll go into the main cot in a separate room at 6 months.

MrsTimRiggins · 22/11/2021 19:48

Sleepyheads are, as mentioned, unsafe for overnight sleeping so I wouldn’t entertain that idea myself.
I have a two week old, who is currently in w Moses basket by our bed, however he was a particularly big baby at 9lb 8oz and growing like no ones business and honestly I can’t see him comfortably fitting in his basket very much longer. The plan then is to put him in a cot, still next to our bed as we’ve the space to do so. Co-sleeping is something we want to avoid as well.
A lot does really depend on the space you have available!

MrsTimRiggins · 22/11/2021 19:49

Oh and for daytime naps, eh either goes in his basket if I’m upstairs, or if I’m downstairs, I put him in the carrycot from his pram.

I loved our bedside crib (snuzpod) because as PP said it's easier to put baby back after a nighttime feed if the side is down.

MsSquiz · 22/11/2021 19:59

With dd (almost 2) she slept downstairs in the carrycot part of her pram and upstairs in a next2me and went from there to her cot at 6 months.

DC2 will probably be the same or we'll get a snuzpod for downstairs sleeping instead of the carrycot

It depends what suits your house I think.
Moses baskets are easy to carry around the house - but have a very limited timeframe. Babies outgrow them very quickly.

Both of mine have started in a traditional crib - because we were loaned it for DD1 and it worked, so we kept it for DD2. But that stays upstairs - so I have a rocker napper for supervised sleep downstairs for the early weeks/months.
They then moved into a cot. (Well, DD2 hasn't moved yet, she's only 10 weeks old.) We got a cotbed so we got a few more years out of it :-)
