Hello. I'm looking for some advice. I live in Scotland and due to covid haven't been able to get registered with a dentist near where we now live. I have had a problem with one of my top back molars since before my pregnancy that has caused me a lot of pain yet at the time they just treated with 2 courses of antibiotics because they couldn't do procedures. Since then I have seen a private dentist near where I live and he says I'll need root canal. My appointment for another consultant with him is on Friday and my tooth pain has suddenly flared up today again. I'm not sure what to do? I have taken paracetamol but it's not done much and Iv tried clove oil again just makes my already pregnant nauseous self feel even more sick. My dentist prescribed me with penicillin which she said to take and then the pain went away and at the time I was 7 weeks pregnant so I kept them but hoped I wouldn't have to use them. Does anyone know if I should take them now and hopefully it clears up until
I see my dentist on Friday or should I hold off until tomorrow and phone my private dentist? I stupidly googled symptoms of toothache and it's made me panic that my headache and not feeling great has something to do with it but surely if it's just suddenly come
On this morning it can't have gotten bad that quickly? Any help would be much appreciated. If you're reading this and a dentist please help me!! Thanks so much in advance

Call your dentist for advice tomorrow, taking the antibiotics won't make a difference tonight or in the morning so wait until you speak to your dentist. The headache prob is related it's all connected. Hope you can get It sorted x

Poor you, I absolutely understand as I am going through the same thing at the moment, just a bit ahead of you.
Had sudden onset tooth pain, got an appt the next day, told I need root canal, prescribed antibiotics and booked an appt for about 10 days. I didn't feel the effect of the antibiotics until 3 days in, that was an almost unbearable 3 days Sad
Had first root canal, seemed to settle down then about 4 days after started to hurt again and a lump appeared on my gum, saw emergency dentist again and got another prescription for antibiotics and have the second root canal booked next week. So hoping the antibiotics will clear up the infection and the tx will fix he problem completely.
I would start on the antibiotics as they may not be able to do your tx for a little while. Saying that you say you're pregnant so would probably seek advice first.
I truly sympathise though!

Also paracetamol doesn't do a lot for tooth pain, ibuprofen is where it's at, but not sure if you can take that.

LCL88 · 21/11/2021 19:38

Sadly I can't take ibuprofen when pregnant. I'm
Just petrified it turns into the pain i suffered before and that was awful. But maybe I should wait and speak
To the dentist tomorrow? I'm conflicted as to what to do sSad. Sorry to hear your pain is so bad it sounds horrific toothache is not fun at all!

It really is, hands down toothache and ear ache are the worst. I thought you may not be able to take ibuprofen Sad I absolutely understand when you say you don't want the same pain as before, I am also worried about that, it was just unbearable. I mean definitely call them tomorrow. If they are a private dentist they should be able to see you tomorrow. Mine are private and even though it's pretty pricey they have managed to see me same day when I've been in pain.

Hopefully your dentist can see you, if not call nhs 111. I had to do this a couple of weeks ago when my private dentist was fully booked. 111 did phone consultation and was referred to a dentist who contacted me that day and prescribed antibiotics. In the meantime, what did help soothe my pain was rinsing the area with warm salt water. Dissolved about a teaspoon in some boiling water then let it cool to lukewarm and rinse area with it.

Mangozesty · 22/11/2021 20:36

@LCL88 how did it go, did you call?

LCL88 · 22/11/2021 22:11

@Mangozesty I did and was told to wait until my appointment on Friday. The pain has been coming and going So it's just worse in the evening whatever that means. Here's hoping I can hold on till Friday!!
