What to do differently after 2 MCs

Hi

I was wondering if any of you ladies have had a double rainbow baby and if yes, what did you do differently for your third pregnancy? I'm pregnant again for the 3rd time but I've already had 2 miscarriages this year. Anything I can do differently? What do you think?

Hello and congratulations. Yes I have. I took a very small amount of baby aspirin in the early stages, I also continued to have acupuncture with a specialist in fertility acupuncture. I don’t know if this made a difference but wanted to share. Good luck OP.

Hello, I'm currently pregnant after 2 mmc. I started to take aspirin but my gp checked my bloods and everything was normal so I stopped again. I also had my booking appointment extra early at 6 weeks and the midwife went through a list to see if I should be taking it but she said not to. Unfortunately I think it's just down to luck.

@GoodVibesOnlyPlease

Hello and thank you for your reply. I was wondering if I too can take baby aspirin and if it's worth contacting the midwife as early as now as well. I might ring my GP and see what they can advise. But yes, I do believe it's all down to luck. Ohh praying this little bean sticks this time!

@DarlingCoffee

Thank you so much for your reply. How I wish I knew someone who can do acupuncture near where I live. If you don't mind me asking, what was the dose of the baby aspirin you took and at what week did you start taking it? I'm just curious because I think it's different for everybody :)

I had two miscarriages in 2019 and then had my double rainbow baby boy in November 2020.

After my second MC I found out through a naturopath that I have a gene mutation called MTHFR which is fair common and affects how your body processes folate and can cause clotting issues and contribute to pregnancy loss.

I went on low dose aspirin, went on the supplements with the right form of folate (I can’t have synthetic folic acid) and also was on progesterone from when I found out I was pregnant until I was around 15 weeks.

Hope this helps Star

I took 75mg of aspirin daily whilst ttc and throughout pregnancy. In my last pregnancy that was increased to 150mg due to my age (41). I’ve had four miscarriages and two successful pregnancies. Nothing to lose by taking it in my opinion - if it wasn’t safe they wouldn’t prescribe it as standard to most women.

GPs are often pretty clueless as are community midwives in my experience. You might want to try the local Early Pregnancy Unit, to see if they can help.

If you’ve had any early bleeding in your previous pregnancies you can ask for progesterone. There’s an infographic on the Tommy’s pages that is for patients to share with their GP or midwife. www.tommys.org/sites/default/files/legacy/PRISM%20Infographic_v4_1.pdf

Good luck!

@heyheyapple definitely worth a phone call to your gp to see if they will do a full set of bloods. The nurse who took my blood recommended trying aspirin and also a midwife I spoke to early on but once everything came back normal I stopped again. Almost half way now 🤞 but the anxiety never leaves you 😓

Honey2 · 19/11/2021 20:14

@heyheyapple I second trying to get some bloods done - they can check a range if things. I had 2 MC earlier this year and due to my age (over 35) this qualified me to see the recurrent miscarriage clinic. The consultant there prescribed progesterone and I took it from 4days past ovulation and I’m not 11+4 😊

Honey2 · 19/11/2021 20:15

That should read NOW 11+4!

Gamechanger2019 · 19/11/2021 21:08

After 2 MCs I am now 22 weeks pregnant. I went private because I found GP was useless and got prescribed progesterone until I was 12 weeks xxx

GinnyBee · 20/11/2021 09:30

I'm now 14 weeks in my third pregnancy after 2 mcs, both around 8-10 weeks. I'm also taking aspirin now, started with 75mg but then upped it to 150mg after doing more research and that's the new NHS recommended dose as well. When I asked my GP about it, they didn't say anything so I went with my own instincts, and have now had my midwife confirm it's completely safe and she was even a little impressed that I'd taken the initiative.

I also had cyclogest in early pregnancy, I got a treatment advice letter from the local consultant and then my GP turned it into a prescription. He wouldn't take me in as a patient for further investigations but agreed to recommend cyclogest and early reassurance scans at the EPU, which I had at 6, 8 and 10 weeks.

I also had basic blood tests done through my GP - full blood count, thyroid function and clotting scree, including APS antibodies. All came back normal, so no answers there.

GinnyBee · 20/11/2021 09:34

@Honey2 That's crazy how things differ from trust to trust! I'm also 35 and tried to get referred for the recurrent miscarriage team due to my age but they refused as they still wanted three mc before starting investigations. Maybe because I was still 34 during my latest mc but only a coupe months off, so no chance to actually get pregnant again before I was 35. I'm still annoyed about that.

Honey2 · 21/11/2021 15:24

@GinnyBee it is really unfair isn’t it? You should really have to have any more thank one miscarriage before they investigate! Considering some of the tests are basic blood tests the GP can order…. I have actually had 4 MCs in total sadly (but had a baby between the first 2 and the last 2) so I don’t know if that bumped me up the priority a bit!
From what I’ve read though seems a shame more people can’t access progesterone from the GP as it seems to have worked for so many people and as far as I understand isn’t an expensive intervention

heyheyapple · 21/11/2021 16:43

@GinnyBee

Thanks for this detailed reply. I'm curious, how much Cyclogest did they prescribe during your pregnancy?

@Gamechanger2019

My GP was insensitive and useless too. They focus on the statistics rather than patient individuality. I wonder, how much progesterone did you take during pregnancy? Just curious 🧐 Thanks!

I had three miscarriages in a year and then had a healthy pregnancy the next year with no changes. I had tests after 3 mc but they found nothing wrong.

I’m sorry about your miscarriages OP, I know it feels horrendous. I spent lots of time Googling potential solutions and researching everything. Wishing you all the best.

russianred · 21/11/2021 17:33

Currently on my 4th pregnancy in the last year, after miscarriages at 5,9 and 17 weeks. I am under care of the recurrent miscarriage clinic and very similarly to lots here take 159mg of aspirin daily, vitamin d, 5mg of folic acid and cyclogest morning and night. I’m also seeing an acupuncturist who specialises in fertility - have been doing so from well before getting pregnant and will continue to use to throughout this pregnancy

LemonDrizzles · 21/11/2021 19:10

Baby aspirin and pregnancy (pre and thenduring) vitamins

Northern12345 · 21/11/2021 19:16

I’ve had 3 miscarriages and 2 successful pregnancies. The only thing I did differently was 75mg of aspirin as soon as I got the BFP, and then carried on until 34 weeks. My consultant and midwife seemed completely non plussed by this. In fact my consultant said I probably solved the problem for them. Good luck - it’s bloody tough x

Honey2 · 21/11/2021 19:46

@heyheyapple progesterone was cyclogest pessaries - 400mg twice per day 😊

heyheyapple · 21/11/2021 20:52

@russianred

I have my fingers crossed for you. I'm glad things are being done to help you in your pregnancy. Really really sorry for your losses. If you don't mind me asking, what is the brand of the folic acid 5mg you are taking? I was advised by a consultant OB to take it too but he did not recommend any brand.

I had two known miscarriages before conceiving DS2 (maybe more too early to detect). I found being on attempt 3 comforting in a way, as I knew that whatever happened that third pregnancy would lead to something, either a baby or some investigation. Good luck :)

Namechange600 · 21/11/2021 21:01

I had two miscarriages and took baby aspirin until around week 11. I did this off my own back. Third time lucky for me.

russianred · 21/11/2021 21:17

@heyheyapple it was prescribed by the consultant who saw me at the recurrent miscarriage clinic so not sure on brand - sorry!
