8.5cm endometrioma

I have had my 12w scan this week and everything is looking well with baby so far (yay!).

The sonographer saw an 8.5cm suspected endometrioma and a smaller cyst on the scan. The doctor saw me during this appointment and said congratulations on getting pregnant in the first place. Now I am a bit worried about a lot of things like complications or future infertility. We didn't struggle to conceive this baby thankfully.

Has anyone else experienced endometrioma and pregnancy at the same time? I am wondering what to expect.

Yes I have a small one (1.5cm), no problems in pregnancy at all but I did have issues getting pregnant in the first place (had to have IVF and unfortunately the endometrioma has affected my egg reserve). However as you have managed to get pregnant that is great, you may never have any fertility problems. All I would say is that if you are planning a second then it might be an idea to have your follicle count and egg reserve checked (which is an 'AMH' blood test) after you've had the baby to see how much time you have to wait between pregnancies. Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

Thank you so much!

I have had painful periods for 12 years and cysts removed but no one has diagnosed endometriosis which dr thinks I have. Your comment has really put me at ease. I was worried it would get in the way and stop baby coming out. The endometrioma is satsuma sized!

Thanks for the suggestion for the tests, I will talk to my dr about it as that would be useful. We haven't gotten to the point of thinking of more tiddlies yet, we'll see how we manage with one!

Mine was discovered at my 20wk scan with DS, it's 3.5cm, at the time they weren't worried about it, said it could be hormone related because of the pregnancy.

I had complications after pregnancy which resulted in more scans and a hysteroscopy which showed it was still there.
I'm currently waiting on a laparoscopy to remove the cyst and investigate for endometriosis. Until then I'm getting scans every 6 months to keep an eye on it.
I'm done with babies so haven't asked about the fertility side of things.

Congratulations on getting pregnant. Some women with endometriosis don’t struggle with fertility despite lots of pain whilst others suffer little pain but are infertile, so you may well not have fertility issues going forward.

8.5cm is quite big though & the presence of endometrioma is usually a sign of fairly advanced endo. It’s unlikely to affect your pregnancy but make sure you get it properly checked out once you’ve recovered from the birth.

Suspected endometrioma!
Hey, I was recently told I may have either a Haemorrhagic Cyst or an Endometrioma. It came about because I’ve been in lots of pain with recent periods, irregular bleeding and pain in my lower right abdomen. I was sent for a scan where they noticed the cyst. I was told I need to wait 6-12 weeks for another scan to check which kind of cyst it actually is. It’s 3cm! We have also been ttc but thankfully not too long, however no luck as of yet. Has anyone else been told that the hospital can’t identify what kind of cyst you have?? It seems odd to me. I’m super anxious that it is an endometrioma and I may struggle to conceive naturally :(! Any info would be hugely appreciated.

I have one of the same size. I've been under consultant care because of it. I've been told by a sonographer that if you need a c-section they'll often remove it while you're open. I'm planning on asking for a c-section specifically to have it removed as I don't want to have a second operation down the line.
I'm 28 wks now and so far it hasn't affected the pregnancy, but I've been told my uterus is pushed to one side because of it.

Yes - I think at one stage a consultant said I was “riddled with disease” (nice turn of phrase) - an endometrioma the size of a tennis ball and various other smaller cysts. One of my ovaries had gone completely AWOL (eventually determined I had ‘kissing ovaries’). I had a very close watch over my first pregnancy and it felt like Sonographers knew my cysts better than the baby - but it ended up entirely uneventful. There was talk about removing them if I had a c-section, but I didn’t, and at a post-natal follow up they decided to leave things be on a ‘let sleeping dogs lie’ basis.

As it took us quite a while to get pregnant first time round I was quite concerned I had ‘got lucky’ despite my messed up reproductive system, but I got pregnant with my second on the first attempt. Bizarrely the cysts got little more than a passing mention second time round. I had an ELCS for unrelated reasons but they just got the baby out, didn’t mess with anything else.

Interesting I used to experience severe pain around my periods which I now put down to endometriosis, but since giving birth it’s completely gone.

@Lalala1985 be very careful with allowing a general gynae to remove a large endometrioma. Removal WILL decrease your ovarian reserve & at worst the ovary will never recover. It’s much better to have it done by an endometriosis specialist who can best gauge how to least damage your ovary.
