Blood Sugars - High?

Redpanda21 · 15/11/2021 11:09

I took my blood sugar level yesterday about 10 mins after some porridge (was showing daughter that it wasn’t painful etc as we are randomly testing her on doctors advice).

My reading was 8.3mmol. I thought it was high but thought because I’d just eaten. 2 hours later it was 6.6mmol.

I’ve tested when I got up this morning out of curiosity and it was 7.2mmol which I know for a non-pregnant fasting person is over the threshold. I’ve since read morning fasting should be 5.4ish.

Should I call the midwife and see if I can have a OGTT? Are my readings indicative of GD?

your post meal readings are fine but 7.2 fasting is quite high. did you have a big meal the night before or very little? 8.3 ten mins after a meal is ok (you aren't supposed to measure til an hour after and then it's supposed to be 7.8) plus porridge is quite high in carbs

How far along are you?

Very little last night - 2 slices of cheese on toast followed by a small slice of apple cake with cream at 7-7.30pm. No other food or drink other than water after.

I’m 26 weeks x

Do you have any risk factors? I've already been booked for a glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks because my mum has type 2 but I don't have any other risk factors, I'm 13 weeks. If you're worried then just ask for it, it's an easy enough test to do (although quite gross - but I hope the sugary drink has improved in the last 30 years when I had to do it as a toddler)

@GinnyBee not according to nhs site.

Yes - that is a little bit high. two hours after eating blood sugar should be back to pre meal level ie less than 6.4 mmol\litre.
Also fist level in morning should be 3.5 to 5.5.

I'm prediabetic, and take an interest!

Request a GTT. I've had 2 GD pregnancies in the last 3y and those readings would have been out of range, especially as porridge shouldn't be too bad in a non GD pregnancy. Current guidance is 7.8 after one hour or 6.4 after 2, but really they shouldn't really spike within the hour either.

It’s been almost two years since I had GD so I can’t remember exact details and guidance may have changed but 7. 2 seems very high for a fasting level - I think my target was under 5.3 or something like that. I would definitely speak to your midwife about it as a GTT will tell you one way or the other.

Thanks for all your messages. I spoke with the midwife earlier and have been booked in for a GTT in a week.

She said to monitor over next few days to see if there’s a pattern or a one off x
