Hi, just found out I'm pregnant, due mid July! I want to get a book about what to expect during pregnancy and birth - does anyone have any recommendations? I'd like something that's fact based and doesn't push a particular agenda. I saw Miriam Stoppard's book recommended on another thread but there are so many others on Amazon I'm not sure what to get.

I've been ploughing through a few. This so far is the best one I've read. Very practically. Not twee or fluffy; straight to the point good advice

Christine Hill's Pregnancy Guide: The essential handbook for all expectant mothers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/009192216X/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcXADN68WP4N8QE7NBR7DJ

Amy Brown has some good resources. she has a book called 'informed is best' which I havent read as I'd already had my first but I did read her positive breastfeeding book which was really good.

I loved expecting better by Emily Oster. And also quite like what to expect when you're expecting for the month by month stuff - good luck! X

In terms of birthing I read:

Hypnobirthing: Practical ways to make your birth better by Siobhan Miller. I read this because I wanted to approach birth more positively as I had a bit of a fear of child birth. It really helped with breathing techniques and also gave me knowledge into different types of pain relief and the stages of labour. (I gave birth naturally with just gas and air in the end)

The Positive Birth book by Milli Hill.
I would say the Positive Birth Book was more factual but helped me understand the birthing process and the pain relief available in more detail.

I liked to read a lot about the birthing process as I do believe knowledge is power and it made me feel less anxious. Each to their own!

For birth and after I read:
Pregnancy, birth and beyond by Marie Louise. A very easy read and light hearted.
Your baby: week by week by Simone Cave

The one by Simone Cave is my bible at the moment. I have an 8 week old baby and it’s helped me understand what she’s going through. I don’t have a text book baby, most of what I read I take with a pinch of salt but I remember it saying week 6 my baby may start smiling and cooing and she actually did around this time. It has some good tips about washing baby, vaccinations and feeding too. I’m a first time mum so this book has helped me a lot.

I really liked the Rough Guide to Pregnancy and Birth by Kaz Cooke - lighthearted and funny, but with down-to-earth, solid advice. Tells you how big the baby is and how it's developing week by week. Am re-reading it at the moment in my current pregnancy!

How to Grow a Baby and Push it Out - Clemmie Hooper.

Light hearted but really informative and easy reading.
