Private hospital rooms after birth

Has anyone had a private room for after they give birth? I never got one the last time but never asked to be honest

I know that their are instances that if you are in a private room amd someone else needs it you will be moved. Just curious

Private room with dc1 because I had a mental health crisis.

Was in HDU after dc2 because we both had sepsis. The room was mahoosive! Then got moved to private room on postnatal due to needing monitoring every 30 minutes.

I have never given birth in hospital, both home births. The first was not planned so I was taken in after and had a private room and bathroom. It was the local birth midwife led birth centre. As far as I know all rooms were private.

That hospital was knocked down and re built, my sister gave birth a 5 years ago and had a private room and bathroom, with a double bed, again as far as I am aware they were all private rooms.

First time elcs i got put in a private room because I kept crying and never slept for two nights. Was in for a week in total.

Second time elcs they had me - and most others- home after one night

I had a private room for my 3rd dc 8 weeks ago, but it was because I was on bedrest for placenta previa, and then when the baby was born she was quite unwell in special care so they left me in it. It was fantastic, I absolutely hate being on a ward with all the noise and lack of privacy. Can't imagine for a second wanting to make friends being a priority when in hospital having a baby?!

We are in south west london and our hospital has private post natal rooms on the post natal ward and you could request first come first served for £150 per night BUT you would get kicked out if someone needed them more. So right now, a lot of them in use for covid + women or for women with babies in NICU.

I had one for five days because my baby was in NICU with sepsis and even then i could hear all the other babies crying every night. It was a horrible feeling and being on the ward would have broken me I think.

I was on the ward with my first and it was hell on earth, with my second I was given a private room for 2 nights it was amazing!

MrsTophamHat · 13/11/2021 19:42

I had one with my daughter but only because it was at the beginning of the pandemic in March last year and so we had to 'declare' that my toddler had had a temperature the week before I went into labour. It was all very early days so we were treated very quarantine-y.

moostermum · 13/11/2021 19:42

I asked for a private room after DC2. They put me in a room right next to the reception so every time someone pressed their buzzer (every 30 seconds), it went off right outside my room 🤦🏼‍♀️

KeyLimeFly · 13/11/2021 19:45

I’m a midwife. Had a private room on postnatal ward after my DC1 was born (the only staff perk you’ll ever get!). It was fine. A bit lonely but I was only there one night.

With DC2 I had a 6 hour discharge so stayed in the lovely birth centre room until we went home. That was better!

Mine was Kingston. They rebuilt postnatal about a decade ago with mostly private en-suite rooms. They’re enormous.
KylieKangaroo · 13/11/2021 20:39

@moostermum I think I would have cried if that happened to me!

sjxoxo · 13/11/2021 20:44

In France they are standard with en suite, stays between 3-5 days. You can choose if you want 2 beds (partners to stay) or just one. I’ve not had baby yet due jan but I’m already v v grateful as I’m too prudey for a ward espesh with french women 😬 I think pricewise are €60-80 but not paid for by user but insurance/social security xo

jjj321 · 13/11/2021 22:29

I had one (health insurance paid for a private birth). It was nice with an en-suite but pretty small. It overlooked the barbed wire fence at Wormwood Scrubs, possibly not the most uplifting view...

mumof1or2 · 13/11/2021 22:56

I read up on it beforehand and knew that you could request them at my hospital so asked as soon as I'd given birth. On the hospital website it said you'd be charged £80 a night but they didn't ever charge me. My doctor friend told me afterwards that they rarely do, not sure why. I didn't have an en suite but it was just lovely to be on my own with my son and not be disturbed by other mums/babies.

SusannahHolmes · 13/11/2021 23:05

I was given one for free as i was labouring on prenatal ward waiting for a consultant led room to give birth in. Long story short DD was born before I ever got moved to the birthing rooms and then they let me keep the room, possibly as they felt guilty for not listening to me telling them not to do a cervical check until I got to the labour ward as in my previous labours this had caused sudden dramatic progress. They insisted on examining me, told me I was only 3cm dilated and they would ring up to the labour ward to see if a room would be available in a few hours. 18 minutes after that examination my daughter was in my arms.

BestZebbie · 14/11/2021 19:56

I got moved to a private room as I got very distressed by everything a few hours after the birth and it was felt that being somewhere quiet on my own with the baby would help. It did. I stayed one night before going home and I don't believe I had to pay (it is all a bit of a blur so it is possible my DH settled up somewhere while I was inside the room).

Chasingaftermidnight · 14/11/2021 20:10

I paid for one in an NHS hospital after the birth of my first (two years ago). It was great - fold out bed for partners, no visiting restrictions, en suite facilities, etc. It did get seriously expensive though because I was in for 4 nights.

This time the private rooms are available (they aren’t using them for Covid+ mothers at my hospital, I checked) but I’m less sure about whether to pay for one. The biggest benefit was having a bed for my DH but now there are visiting restrictions in place across the unit - no partners overnight including in the private rooms. Also, I found being in a private room last time made it harder to attract the midwives’ attention. That didn’t really matter when I had DH there but I think it might matter more when I’m on my own.
