Apologies for another name thread, but we're stuck!

I'm English and my husband's Pakistani and we are having a baby boy. We have come up with three names and can't decide between them - none of them seem quite right!

They are

Kamran (can shorten to Cam?)
Adam
Haroun (can shorten to Harry?)

Would like to hear what you think!

I like adam and kamran as to me they seem the most culturally interchangable.

Are there any other names you like that fit one way or the other but not necessarily into both cultures?

mylittleponey · 13/12/2007 19:24

haroun to harry mixes well.

MrsBadger · 13/12/2007 19:26

I actually know a Haroun / Harry with a Pakistani mother and English father. Everyone calls him Harry though, even her mother.

doublekissesdoublexmaswishes · 13/12/2007 19:29

I'm gonna have to go with Adam, but then that's ds's name as well !!
I also work with a pakistani lady with a son called Adam and she tells me it's quite popular. The others are nice as well

expatinscotland · 13/12/2007 19:32

I like Kamran a lot!

What a gorgeous name.

Also Haroun.

I don't much care for Adam.

nimnom · 13/12/2007 19:34

I love Adam and Kamran

oxocube · 13/12/2007 19:36

Haroun/Harry gets my vote

DontCallMeSantaBaby · 13/12/2007 19:37

All are great names - my misgiving with Kamran would be that people will mishear it as Cameron, and you, DH and eventually DS will constantly have to correct them.

Acquaintances of ours refer to having had to come up suitably mochaccino (or was it cappuccino, or latte?) names for their light brown children, and ended up with Esa and Noor.

LOVEMYMUM · 13/12/2007 19:57

I'm in a similar position as I'm English and DH is middle-eastern. Our surname isn't English sounding and although i like some middle-eastern first names, we have ruled them out cos it marks LO out as being 'different'.

Anyway, DH likes the name 'Katie' (we've been told LO is probably female).

I like Adam out of your three. Any ideas for a middle name for your LO?

iliketojinglethembells · 13/12/2007 20:02

I've noticed that aaron/arun is quite a popular name for mixed race (pakistani/english) little boys. I really like kamran

vickyy · 13/12/2007 21:45

hm, well it's good no-one hates any of them! we've tried to think of other options, and have spent hours trawling through websites, but it's just these three on the shortlist right now. our surname is quite Pakistani-sounding so we've ruled out anything too "English" sounding as it might be odd.

as for middle names... no idea yet!... probably names with some family history I expect.

Adam is lovely. Haroun/Harry is a good solution too.

zebedee1 · 13/12/2007 22:02

Kamran is a gorgeous name, love it!

EachPeachPearMum · 13/12/2007 22:52

Danial/Danyaal/Daniel?
Joseph/Yusef?
Suleman/Soloman?
Zain/Zane? (though not if yr name's Hussain rofl!)

I do like Haroon/Harry! I think there are too many Adams around... sorry- I like more unusual names.

SnowMuchToBits · 13/12/2007 22:57

I like Adam and Kamran. but my ds's friend (Iranian family) is Alireza, which I love. It can be Ali for short. Ali and Reza are both popular Muslim names, but I just love the combination.

slim22 · 13/12/2007 22:58

Kamran and Haroun with a clear preference for the 2nd.

spackcat · 14/12/2007 09:44

I like Haroun/Harry - it keeps him in touch with his roots and background yet is easy to say/spell and shorten. I know what it's like choosing a name when one partner is not British - my dh is Zimbabwean and we called our son Farai, perfectly common/normal name there but here people see it as unusual just because it is not a British name - very annoying sometimes. I think it is important that children are kept in touch with their cultural backgrounds especially when most of their relatives from one side are living abroad. We are going to call our new arrival Nayasha which is also a Shona name, we like it and it makes a change from the usual names that you get three of per class!

bethoo · 14/12/2007 09:56

Caleb

iliketojinglethembells · 14/12/2007 10:14

ooooooh i love love love love the name caleb but dp would never go for it if this ones a boy

chunkypudding · 14/12/2007 10:21

Haroun is lovely - there is a beautiful kid's story (by Salman Rushdie) called 'Haroun and the Sea of Stories.'

It is a really lovely fairytale centering around a boy called Haroun...

so another vote for the name from me!

mamadoc · 14/12/2007 10:30

My best friends in your situation called their boys Kiran and Jay. Of those 3 I like Haroun the best.

bethoo · 14/12/2007 10:37

out of the three i prefer Adam though i liked my idea!
