Polyhydramnios (extra fluid) - 37 weeks?

Hi all! I went for a presentation scan today at 37w as they were concerned baby was lying breech (turns out she’s not!) but on the scan they picked up that I’ve got a lot of extra fluid - on the high side, not just borderline. I’ve seen the consultant but between that and good old Google I’m now absolutely terrified of cord prolapse, potential issues with baby at birth as well as how labour is going to go. I’ve been booked in for an induction at 39+3. GD test came back normal earlier on in pregnancy and today. Any positive stories would be welcome for this anxious mumma!

@Chely @Rrrob thanks for sharing your stories it really does help to read about positive outcomes

bear1991 · 18/11/2021 10:15

Sorry everyone, I haven’t been keeping up!

@TreeRoad sorry to hear you’ve been diagnosed too. I haven’t had any issues feeling uncomfortable in my head but all the other issues you mention.. yes. Taking Gaviscon most days and soo uncomfortable sitting or lying down and exhausted standing up 😂

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee sorry that baby is still breech! That’s why they send me for my original presentation scan but turns out she’s flipped head down so praying she stays that way 🤞🏼 Hopefully your bubba turns too! They raised the possibility of ECV for me too when they thought she was breech.

@KB86 sweep hasn’t been mentioned for me but the consultant did mention the balloon method for induction. My TORCH screening results came back yesterday negative for all infections which I’m SO relieved about, I spoke to my midwife and she said it’s completely up to me but given that I had a straightforward birth and labour with DS she would personally recommend induction over c section. I’ve been thinking about it overnight and I think I may be leaning more towards that now…

@Chely and @Rrrob thank you so much for sharing your stories. It makes me feel so much better knowing that extra fluid can just be ‘one of those things’. Praying that’s the case for all of us here 🙏🏼

How's everything going for everyone?

I have another growth scan tomorrow and consultant appointment so hoping to learn more this week! Currently feel like I've been left fearing the worst for 3 weeks since the first growth scan showed his huge size and excess fluid as I haven't been given any other info

bear1991 · 23/11/2021 14:31

@bama4 let us know how the growth scan goes tomorrow! Definitely ask all the questions you need to, I made a list of questions I had to go through with the midwife and consultant after the initial shock of the diagnosis and it really helped.

I’m being induced on Friday if I don’t go into labour beforehand (39w today!). I’m so hoping everything is going to go smoothly 🤞🏼

@bear1991 thank you! A list of questions is a great idea, I tend to forget how to speak on the spot at the scans and come away disappointed!

Good luck for Friday, hoping it all goes smoothly and relatively quickly for you!

2020mission · 23/11/2021 19:52

@bama4 fingers crossed your scan tomorrow goes well! I'm still waiting for my GTT test (booked for 36 weeks) and an obstetrics appointment 2 days before that. I've just been left to wait since being diagnosed with polyhydramnios at 32 weeks. My husband is type 1 diabetic so we used his blood glucose meter and done our own home test on me and it seems that I'm fine. I had 4.1 blood sugar on waking up after fasting, tested and then ate a bowl of cereal and drank a small orange juice. Tested again 2 hours later and it was 4.7. I know that doesn't guarantee I'm clear of gestational diabetes but I'm feeling better now since that seem fine at least 😅 I'm just hoping by a miracle my next appointment shows the fluid has gone down but my bump does still feel big and rock hard.

Hope everyone else is ok!

Hello! I've just been for scan, was supposed to be a 36 week scan, but I'm only 34+5, so a bit unexpected really. On the plus side, fluid levels are within limits!!

However, baby is measuring massive, way off the charts, and is still breech, but not frank any more, one leg is folded under, so that gives hope for them turning yet. I'm back in 2 weeks for another growth scan and delivery choices will be discussed then. My son was predicted 10lb at 40 weeks and he was 10lb 11 at 40+11, and this one is measuring bigger, much bigger apparently!!!

bear1991 · 25/11/2021 12:07

Brilliant news re the fluid @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee, what a relief! Good baby isn’t huge 😱 will they induce you if so? Sorry I can’t remember if you’ve already said!
I’m feeling nervous about my induction tomorrow. Just to top it off, my 3yo DS has woken up with chickenpox yesterday - you couldn’t make it up!

Hope not good 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh no!!! Thats one of my biggest fears, I have a 3 year old too and he hasn't had chicken pox yet, hope he's not too ill with it!

Yes induction has been talked about, and I think after the next scan in 2 weeks it will be either set a date for ECV or an elective section if baby is still breech, or set a date for induction if it has turned. Its complicated by the fact that I'm 39 weeks on Christmas day, so we'll just have to see what date suggest.

Maybe I'll be buying a 'my first Christmas' sleepsuit this year yet!!!!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 01/12/2021 14:18

How are things @bear1991? Hopefully your baby has arrived safe and well!

Nothing changed for me, still breech and still huge! I'm 35+4 today and yeah, just trying to get this baby to turn so I can avoid a section!

bear1991 · 01/12/2021 14:40

Hello all! Baby girl arrived 27.11 weighing 7lb 5oz! I was induced with the pessary in the end and my waters went naturally about 16hrs later - I was lying on the bed when they went and it was like a waterfall all over the edge - definitely take several spare nighties/PJS! Mine kept leaking right up until I pushed her out a few hours later.

We did have to spend 4 days in hospital after she had an episode where they were sure if she was fitting or gagging on mucus which was very scary ☹️ So I don’t think the extra fluid helped in that respect. I was also only ten minutes pushing so she didn’t get much chance to get all the mucus squeezed out of her as she arrived!

Wishing you all all the best with your beautiful babies - be sure to update on here when they arrive!

Hi all just been diagnosed with Polyhydramnios im 37+2 and so worried! I'm booked in for a c section at 39weeks ( maternal request) but I'm just so worried now somethings going to happen has anyone else had this and been okay? Xx

2020mission · 25/05/2022 20:34

@odey9621 please try not to worry. Did they say what size the largest fluid pocket was? I had polyhdramnios diagnosed at 32 weeks and I was induced at 39 weeks because of it. I had a lot of waters but otherwise everything was fine. Baby well and no obvious reason for it. A lot of the time there is no obvious reason.

TreeRoad · 26/05/2022 08:25

@odey9621 I was diagnosed around 36 weeks and there was no cause ever identified. I was given the choice of CS or induction. I went for induction as they felt there was no real reason to choose surgery with the longer recovery period etc.

Anyway, baby was born in December at 39+1 and was 8lb3oz, so not huge. When my waters were broken, there was LOADS of fluid. I didn’t have anything to compare it to as it was my first baby, but the midwife said there was a lot. 😂

My baby is fit, well and completely healthy. He’s a chunky, smiling, teething little lunatic who loves waking us up at 5am for a chat.

Good luck when your delivery comes, it’s the best thing ever to have your baby with you!

bear1991 · 27/05/2022 14:40

@odey9621 just came to update that my baby is now thriving (although doesn’t like sleep 😂) and is 6 months old today. No cause for the polyhydramnios was ever found 🤞🏼

I just had a LOT of fluid when my waters broke in labour! Best of luck!

They have said the deepest pool is 7.8 but the amniotic fluid is 22. Something g so it has slightly gone down but no more scans are being done which I'm not happy about as I thought they would check again xx

odey9621 · 27/05/2022 20:43

@TreeRoad So glad that baby was okay! Did you go into labour naturally? I'm so worried about going into labour before the c section! Xx

odey9621 · 27/05/2022 20:44

@bear1991 so glad to here that! They've not told me anything about the possible cause or even tried to find out maybe because I'm so far along now and my c section is booked but still I'd like to know if I have GD or there couod be somthing else xx

2020mission · 29/05/2022 11:54

@odey9621 they don't seem to give a toss about polyhdramnios a lot of the time! Having discovered it at 32 weeks, they eventually offered me the glucose tolerance test at 38 weeks! I had already tested myself at home as my husband is diabetic and has a blood glucose machine so I knew I was clear. Pointless testing me so late on! They only did 1 further scan after that 32 week one and they didn't reassure me in any way even though it had got worse. There was no C section option for me, they only offered the induction and they actually weren't as bothered about that either as they allowed me to delay induction - they wanted to induce me on Christmas Eve but I pushed it back to Boxing Day as I didn't want to give my little one a Christmas birthday 😂
