Moses Basket

Would people recommend a moses basket or one of the cot type things that attached beside the bed

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a Moses basket for your newborn, we’ve recently updated our best Moses baskets and best cribs pages with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

The ones that attach to a bed are generally bigger than a Moses basket which helps because DC should be in your room until they’re 6 months old.

My DS grew out of his Moses basket at 8 weeks, since then we’ve had the full size cot in our bedroom. Luckily we have enough space.

It was really useful being able to move the Moses basket around the house in the early days though. Definitely more potable than one that side cars to the bed.

I have a moses basket for downstairs so they have somewhere safe to sleep during the day but got a next to me cot that will join our bed for overnight. Saves having to move moses basket around all the time.

Nat4392 · 09/11/2021 18:58

Both. I had a next-to-me upstairs and a Moses basket for downstairs.

PlantMummy87 · 09/11/2021 20:13

We are going for a next-to-me by the bed, and then as we have a carrycot with the pram system so we aren't going to get a Moses basket and will use that for downstairs.

Ameteurmum · 09/11/2021 21:41

I personally don’t like those next to me style cribs and have always used a moses basket - moved them in to their cot once they outgrew the basket

We had a Snuzpod for DD which was good until she was 6 months. It’s easily removed from its stand so can be moved around the house for naps. We’re in a flat so didn’t need anything extra.

We’ll be using the same for DC2 who is due next month.

nousernamehere01 · 09/11/2021 22:05

I'll be using both, Moses basket for downstairs and a next to me crib for the bedroom. Just because I want somewhere a bit more contained with my 2yo running around!
LOVE the next to me for night time though, especially seeing as our bed is already full for the time being with the toddler 😂

Flittingaboutagain · 09/11/2021 22:28

Be prepared for a baby that refuses to sleep anywhere but on you for the fourth trimester. After that, I would recommend both a bedside crib and a Moses basket for portability. I pop my baby in the Moses basket awake, on the bathroom floor whilst I shower or put the baby in it downstairs asleep when I make lunch etc. At night baby will now sleep in the Snuzpod but wouldn't until 12 weeks old which is not uncommon.

Duckrace · 09/11/2021 22:44

I always used the carry cot downstairs, as Moses baskets make a crackling noise. Unless they don't any more?

INeedNewShoes · 09/11/2021 23:43

I used a Moses basket for DD. It was useful after a c section to not have a next-to-me style crib attached to the bed as sitting up/getting out of bed was enough of a challenge without needing to avoid an obstacle.

DD went into a normal cot at 3 months (still next to my bed) as we’d been away for 3 weeks and she’d slept in a cot away so I felt like I may as well stick with that.

Where did you all get your Moses baskets from? I don’t know how much we should be spending on one.

Ameteurmum · 19/11/2021 20:06

Mine was from the Claire de lune website and I’m certain it was £30odd. Mine is like a traditional palm type one rather than those weird hooded ones that look like a casket

bloatedorpregnant · 19/11/2021 20:12

Thanks @Ameteurmum haha! what you got is what I want.

Tickly · 19/11/2021 23:02

Definitely got a lot of use from my next to me cot.

shivawn · 20/11/2021 13:19

I got a Moses basket for downstairs and a Next to Me for upstairs but my 4 week old baby prefers the moses basket so he is sleeping in that full time. I just put the Moses basket in to the Next to Me at night. He's a tall baby and is growing so fast though that he will probably be too big for the Moses basket in a couple more weeks. We'll have to transition to Next to Me at night and get a travel cot or something for downstairs. I wouldn't spend much on a Moses basket because it won't last long if you have a big baby but they're great for the start if you can get one cheap. I carry it all around the house with me so I can do jobs in different rooms and keep an eye on him.

QueenLagertha · 20/11/2021 13:25

I bought a next to me for DS. He was too tiny. Completely lost in it. A friend gave me a Moses basket and I used to put it inside the next to me. Loved the next to me once he was a bit bigger

DuneFan · 20/11/2021 13:31

Mine were one passed on from a friend and one from free cycle. New mattresses for each.(about £15 from Amazon)

You'll use then for such a short time that I don't think it's worth spending much.

Mumtobemel · 20/11/2021 17:39

I think either are fine - but I’ve heard babies can grow out of Moses baskets quite quickly, so depending on how you look at it it could be an unnecessary spend, as both can be used from birth. My friends baby was in her cot at 4 months because she outgrew her Moses basket and hated her next2me crib. I think I’m going to skip the Moses basket and go straight to the bedside crib, so baby is used to it from day one. You don’t have to put the next2me cribs by the bed either, we’re hoping to with ours but our bedroom is such an awkward shape it will be a tight, if not impossible, fit. Midwife advised that crib could go at the end of the bed if that was the case. Get what suits you - although I completely understand it can be sooo confusing as there are so many different crib types out there!
