Good morning all,

Is green tea safe to drink during pregnancy in exchange to my much loved tea/ coffee?

Everywhere I have read says it's ok but I'm in my 1st trimester and just want to be sure (anxious)

Thank you x

It's not caffeine free, so you would just need to be aware of that and stay within the NHS guideline of 200mg per day. I've kept on drinking tea and coffee, but just switched to decaf versions which taste the same to me and means I don't have to worry about calculating how much caffeine I've had on a daily basis.

I’ve been drinking green tea happily too, I think it’s fine and I only have one cup.

Out of interest is there a decaf tea anyone would recommend? I bought one somewhere but don’t find it the same as my usual strong English breakfast as it tastes weaker/ less good somehow.

I drink earl grey tea and find it to be the same, but that might be because of the bergamot oil flavouring in that type of tea. Have you tried Clipper decaf tea? I find the flavour of their standard decaf tea to be quite strong, but as I'm normally an earl grey drinker it might just be strong for me!

Thanks everyone. Just want a herbal tea that's caffeine free really. Xx

In that case you're best off looking at fruit teas, peppermint, rooibos, etc. There are some really nice blends to try.

Thanks @Welshcake15 off shopping tomorrow so I'll take a look Smile

For English Breakfast Tea I've found Yorkshire Tea Decaf to be the best by far. The PG tips one was awful!

Chelyanne · 08/11/2021 16:24

It's fine so long as within caffeine intake limits, you can get decafe ones. I really enjoy Yorkshire tea decafe teabags if you miss tea.
Green tea made me vomit in the early months but was fine later on.

You can add cordial to hot water for a nice cuppa, herbal teas can leave a weird aftertaste.

Pugmumm · 08/11/2021 16:42

Thank you so much everyone I'll try those Yorkshire tea decaf Grin

Some studies have shown green tea can impact folate absorption so it may be best to go lightly until you’re past 12 weeks

Pugmumm · 08/11/2021 18:20

Thank you everyone. What did everyone drink?

I’m having one normal coffee a day then decaf tea!

Pugmumm · 08/11/2021 18:35

Thanks @itssquidstella. I'll probably stick to decaf tea or a fruit tea, I'll see how I get on Smile

I had one filter coffee each morning and a decafe tea or deacafe filter coffee in the evening. I started doing it pre-pregnancy to cut caffeine consumption down and still doing it now baby is 13 weeks old.

I drank green tea when pregnant with my little one. Not in excess but at least one cup a day. I did tend to buy Decaf green tea when I saw it in the shops x
