Blood clotting cause of miscarriages - hope with blood thinners?

I've had fertility treatment for years and I have had several miscarriages.
I eventually had some tests done privately which shows I have something which causes blood clotting making the chance of miscarriage & stillbirth higher (Factor II prothrombin mutation).

Because of this I am on blood thinning injections daily and will need to also take aspirin throughout any future pregnancies.

Has anyone had something like this before and then had success after having blood thinners/aspirin?

I had a MC first. Then I took heparin/clexane and aspirin daily (prescribed) and now have a healthy 4 year old. I have a different thrombosis to you. Best of luck Flowers

@PuertoPollensa
That's really good to hear. Thank you. Yes it is Clexane I've been on and they've said they'll prescribe aspirin. I just really hope this makes a difference and we have a baby at the end of it all x

Yes. I had a miscarriage, then a live birth, then four more miscarriages, them was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden, then had my son using thinners. I do not believe I'd have had him without the drugs, I was told by daughter was "a miracle" by the specialists as they couldn't understand how I'd managed to carry her to term.

My understanding is that on thinners your chance of miscarriage drops to be the same as any other women, which I found reassuring.

Yes similar to above. Already had a diagnosed clotting disorder. First pregnancy advised to take aspirin from 6 weeks ended in MMC. Could have been completely unrelated but we'll never know. Second pregnancy advised to take aspirin from positive test then blood thinners from 6 weeks until labour. I now have a 4 month old and that pregnancy thankfully was pretty uneventful. Good luck 💐

@zurala
I'm sorry to hear of all your losses.
She does sound like a miracle as I've known others who have factor V Leiden and haven't been able to carry to term without the medication.
It's reassuring to hear how the meds improve chances. I really hope this happens for us this time.

@Fizzl
Thank you 🌺
It's hard isn't it as you'll never know. I've felt like that with mine. I've had 3 MC's - the furthest along I got was 11 weeks.
We didn't know about the blood issue before then so I wasn't on medication. Doctors have said it could be unrelated but who knows.
This time I've had to take blood thinning injections straight after having the embryo transfer.
I'm really glad you had a positive outcome in the end 🙂

I had 3 recurrent miscarriage due to my factor 8 blood I got prescribed clexane and have had 3 healthy pregnancies since being prescribed that and aspirin

RainbowHope4 · 07/11/2021 13:38

@Honeycomb129
Oh I'm so glad you've had 3 healthy pregnancies and that is so so reassuring to hear.
I'm sorry about your previous losses. It's sad to think of going through so much heartache before being given the medication needed.

I had exactly the same and was prescribed aspirin and clexane for first 12 weeks, plus progesterone pessaries = 2 x healthy IVF pregnacies, now 9 and 7. It can work out, good luck xxx

PuertoPollensa · 07/11/2021 15:43

Oh, I am now pregnant again and I think taking natural progesterone cream (unprescribed) helped. Not with the thrombophilia obviously, but I believe low progesterone was an issue for me.
I know that's not what you asked, but just that there might be other factors to consider

RainbowHope4 · 07/11/2021 17:38

@PuertoPollensa
Yes I've been on progesterone pessaries each time as I've had IUI and IVF so they've prescribed that each time too.

@RainbowHope4 that's great 👍

Hello
Just further to my original message. I'm due to have a scan today and if all is well, the doctor has said they will switch me from Clexane to oral aspirin for the remainder of the pregnancy. Is oral aspirin just as effective as Clexane?
I'm trying to find out via google but can't really see anything. I will ask them today too but just wondered if anyone else has had this where they've switched from Clexane to oral aspirin during the pregnancy and do you know the reason this happened? Thanks.

Being very cynical, I suspect it may be because it's cheaper. They may be thinking you are through the period of greatest danger and so they can switch you. It's not something I personally (without being a medic) consider best practice, though.

I have a mixed experience. I've had 6 mcs and three children, have Factor V and MTFHR. My last two miscarriages happened on Clexane (or, more precisely, Fragmin), but so did my final, term pregnancy - however, I'd also had two previous live births without. One of the miscarriages on Fragmin was down to chromosomal issues (de novo, no translocation), so there was one mc in my case that it perhaps could have prevented and didn't. I absolutely do believe blood thinners can help, and I may not have had dd had I not been given them. And tbh I would feel a lot better staying on Clexane than just having aspirin. I'd ask them for their reasoning IIWY. Good luck for your scan today. Flowers

I had one chemical pregnancy and one successful pregnancy (although I was induced at 37 weeks for other reasons).

I have factor V and was told to take 75mg aspirin while TTC and increase it to 150mg when 10 weeks pregnant. I (think) I was told to stop taking it at 36 weeks.

I had no idea about factor v and increased risk of miscarriage- I feel very lucky to have my little boy now x
