28 week blood test

Hi all!

I’m due to go in for my 28 week antenatal appointment in a couple of weeks, and have been told to eat toast/a sandwich an hour before so they can do a blood test to see how my body is processing glucose. Is this standard procedure? I’m wondering if they think I’m a gestational diabetes risk - but I don’t believe I have any of the warning factors - my bmi was slightly high at 26.5 when I became pregnant but I thought they only worried if it’s over 30? Any advice much appreciated! Thanks

I've just had my 3rd gtt. I've always starved from 10pm the night before and nothing except water after that?

I think it’s just because some people can get a bit fainty if blood is taken and they’ve not had breakfast!
Not heard about this test being standard though. Perhaps it’s part of a trial? Don’t forget that you can ask whatever you like about the risks/benefits and say no.

Some trusts do a HBA1C blood test instead of a full on glucose tolerance test and it's quicker and easier so you can use it more widely as a screening tool. I imagine if the results were off they would get you in for a full GTT. I have to have a full GTT as my dad is diabetic - even though he is type 2 and I have a normal bmi.... I'm not looking forward to it!

For my 28 week test I wasn't told anything about eating beforehand. I just had breakfast as normal.
