Double Buggies ... how to find the right one

I know this has probably been done a million and one times - and I've read some previous threads but ...

I'm expecting twins in May and want a buggy which will take car seats. I don't necessarily want carrycots as I have access to two M&P carrycots which will be fine for the babies to sleep in. As far as I can see, and hopefully I've missed something, Jane are one of only a couple of companies to do a double which can be used as a travel system.

Would prefer a 3 wheeler and have discounted the M&P Aria. Live in the country so don't need something suitable for public transport but I would need it to fit in the boot and also to be easily assembled.

Any suggestions as to what I ought to look at? TIA

Isn't there a multiple pregnancy section somewhere on here? You might get more joy there.

I have heard there is a new pram coming out called an icandy pear. I havent got a link but if you look it up on google you should find it. I was looking at it as I am expecting DC2. I am sure you could fix 2 car seats or a carry cot or a seat to it. I liked it because its about the size of a single buggy (dont ask me how) but the seats only go up to 3 which wont be much good for me. I have a runway toddler so would like the security of putting her in a buggy when needed or a bit longer than 3! Have you also tried looking on the product review section of mumsnet.

Thanks for your comments ... have looked at the iCandy Pear & would like to see it in 'the flesh'. DH likes the look of the Jane 3-wheeler. Lots of food for thought. Will get advice from mults board too.

Ta!

Also look on products board. There is a thread on there about the icandy pear. I have also started a thread asking for opinions on pushhairs for toddlers and babies.

KristinaM · 13/12/2007 00:55

i have the jane. its easy to push with 2 heavy children

M&P aria`not suitable for toddlers unless they are skinny or dressed in summer clothes

The out n about twin 3 wheeler is great and lightweight - look it up on the net!

Didylicious · 14/12/2007 09:45

try in the twin 3 wheeler section at www.kiddicare.com - my sister has this twin buggy (the out n about nipper) - get the fixed wheel one! It's so good off road.

She has had hers a few years now - it's very durable, and she tells me has loads of onboard storage for shopping or those baby essentials!

It's very easy to manouver - off road or on -

Don't bother with a swivel wheel one for "real" countryside walks it will frustrate you when the swivel wheel bounces around this way and that everytime it hits a stone or stick or lump on the ground and makes it harder to push!

Thanks all for the suggestions. Was in pram shop today and had a quick talk with the lady. Will probably discount Nipper, Mountain Buggy etc because they can't take car seats. Am going to look at Jane PowerTwin & iCandy Pear in new year and take it from there. Decisions decisions!!

Hi Millie1. I looked at the icandy pear yesterday. My needs are different to yours as I was looking for a pram for a toddler and newborn. However, I thought the seats were very small. My DD is 2.2 and quite small and was already looking a bit too snug. They say it lasts till 3 but I couldnt see it myself. Dont mean to patronise you but it might be something you want to think about as you may want a pram to last until the twins are 3 in which case the pear may be a bit small. It was aslo quite heavy which may become more of a problem as they get older. Having said that though there seems to be a compromise on every twin buggy I have seen. I opted for a P&Ts in the end which was the nearest I could get to what I wanted but still had some drawbacks.

It might be worth bearing in mind it's not recommended to have a baby in a car seat for extended periods of time. One of the reason for this is that very tiny babies may have their airway partially obstructed by the angle of the babies head laying onto it's chest (because car seats rarely lay completely flat) and can suffer from reduced oxygen.

I think twins tend to be born earlier and so this might be even more of an issue for twins.

Thanks miceegg & Didylicious. I had read that about the iCandy Pear and it does put me off. We have a Phil & Teds ... our needs were the same as yours when we bought it. It's a good buggy but, as you say, has some drawbacks however not suitable for use with 2 newborns.

Thanks Didylicious for the info re time spent in carseats ... that's something I had read recently but my need to put the carseats in the pram will be short local journeys followed by a blast round local shops/supermarket or a walk ... so never more than an hour max. Ought to be okay. Yes, a bit of a worry with longer journeys but I think one seat reclines fully for use from birth although the other is for use for 6 months ... maybe have to juggle them around if we have a longer journey!

There's lots to think about! Thanks again.
