Gender reveal!

Hello!
We are having a ‘gender’ scan to see the sex of the baby and we are so excited! we will be 16 and a half weeks and have arranged to immediately meet with family to share the news however it’s just dawned on me that they may be unable to tell from the scan and starting to panic!! How likely is it that baby isn’t cooperating? Is there anything I can do to help it be more successful? I know not everyone agrees with finding out the sex beforehand but please no unnecessary mean comments - we are so excited either way and want to be as physically and mentally prepared as possible!
Would love to hear any stories! Thanks in advance xx

My girl kept her legs resolutely crossed for our sex scans. I would've waited except covid meant DH couldn't come to nhs scans. I don't think you're wrong for finding out but family reveals other than "oh btw baby is..." are so cringe

Well it’ll go one of two ways- a boy or a girl. So prepare yourself for it being one of those.

They will probably be able to tell from the scan. Sometime they ask you to shift position or jump up and down. You can confirm what they say at the twenty week scan, but I’m sure they’re going to be pretty accurate, although I think 16 weeks might be a smidge on the early side.

At my 20 week NHS scan they couldn’t tell as the umbilical cord was between her legs.

bookish83 · 06/11/2021 20:30

We were told the wrong gender at our 16 week scan - they were wrong twice!

Correct at our NHS one

I'd hold off until 20 weeks honestly!

Sometimes babies are awkward! If baby doesn’t cooperate, you can still meet family but just say baby wasn’t cooperating and still have a nice time being excited about baby.

We don’t want to find out the sex until baby is here. However, ours has been awkward at every scan. Always in the wrong position, always moving when they try to take measurements, never staying still long enough to take a photo. It’s a bit of a running joke now that baby won’t behave during scans.

The sign in my local hospital says 1 in 20 times they get it wrong or can't say! We are having a boy, we had our 20 week scan this past week. His legs were wide open and everything was on show but the sonographer said they can only ever say they're 95% sure.

A friend of mine wanted to know at her 20 week scan but they couldn't give a definite answer. They said they "thought" it was a girl.

I also know someone who thought they were having a girl until a 36 wk growth scan revealed otherwise...

@InTheNightWeWillWish DS was like this all three of my NHS scans to HOURS to get the right angles, images and measurements. I had to go out and come back for two of them 🤦‍♀️

We didn't have a sex scan but at the private 4D scan they had no issue seeing his genitals (kepts secret) and quite a hard time seeing his face which was wedged down between my hip and and his placenta.

Not all badly though, he's a very easy baby. DD was the opposite way round.

You can go to a private clinic and do a blood test which will tell you the sex of the baby.

Myselfplusone · 07/11/2021 01:00

Blood test is definitely the best option if you've already arranged the reveal, they're around £130
I had to rearrange my gender scan.. like another poster said, my baby also kept her legs shut and the sonographer wasn't able to confirm gender.
I was 16 weeks

So, I held my babies in my arms at a similar gestation so saw them without the skin barrier, and neither me nor the midwives were able to tell the sex for SURE.my guesses were right in the end but it’s not an exact science. I wish you well with your pregnancy xxx

We have had 3 scans at 16, 20 and 22 weeks at hospital for high risk pregnancy reasons and every scan baby was either in a bad position or chord was in between legs. We are now 24 weeks and don't know out babies sex 😂 sometimes they just don't want you to know haha. So definitely don't expect to know as it may not work out that way. Good luck!x

Oh my goodness that has put things into perspective. Sorry for your losses xxx

I've had two 16 week scans, bang on 16 weeks and both correct. Also in awkward positions but try to drink something cold before to get baby moving
