What can a newborn sleep in..

Hi ladies,

FTM here.

I was just wondering what a newborn typically sleeps in. We are trying to save on costs and are looking for a bed that will last longer than six months. We are trying to avoid a Moses basket because we’ve heard that baby will outgrow it’s a very quickly.

Can anybody recommend what we can purchase for baby to sleep in that will last maybe a year and beyond?

We will need something for baby to sleep downstairs during the day, and in the bedroom with us at night time.

I would use a lie flat pushchair for day time naps and then a cot/cotbed for night time, this will last then until baby is ready for a full size bed.

Paperyfish · 06/11/2021 15:35

Our travel system had carry cot that we planned to use downstairs and a cot upstairs. She slept in our arms downstairs and in our bed upstairs. Hth!

@Paperyfish 🤣 Plans do not work with babies, I started off with a cot, but baby also ended up in our bed!!!

We used a regular cot from birth for overnight sleep, and we're given one of these which we used for daytime naps

Though actually both of mine would only contact nap, so mostly they slept on me or in the sling.

LakeShoreD · 06/11/2021 15:41

Mine both went in the big cot as newborns and we used the pram for daytime naps. Some pram carrycots are also ok for overnight sleeping and you can stands for the them so they’re just like a Moses basket.

Just to add that babies grow ridiculously quickly but toddlers slow down a bit. We have a smaller sized cot (120 rather than 140) and a tall child and we got to 3 with out cot so a cot is a given as one of your choices. I would agree with pram for downstairs at first but I would use the cot upstairs when they get older and start to try and roll. Mine always woke herself up after about 20 min when she fell asleep in the pram because she tried to roll over.

A cot upstairs.

When mine were very small they slept in the baby bouncer then the pram. We did have a travel for in the living room for a time with DS as well.

We have a Moses basket and it was literally £30. My other two stayed in the basket until 3/4 months and then went in their cot in their room. 2 x sleeping devices. You will never get away from needing 2 sleep spaces unless you put them in a cot from day 1. Or a single bed 😂

TakeYourFinalPosition · 06/11/2021 17:54

Be careful with prams. We were advised to get a travel system with a bassinet for baby to sleep in - fine, but a lot aren’t sleep safe for longer than an hour or so. The Bugaboo we loved I sn't, for example. And then the baby will grow out of the bassinet at around 6 months…

We’ve ended up with an iCandy (with bassinet for using downstairs sleeping), and a Snuzpod for the bedroom, but baby will have to move into a cot at 6 months.

We were then told at NCT classes that swaddling the baby in a normal cot would work from birth, and that a cheap Moses basket would work for a few months downstairs, but we’d already sorted the above by the time they started!

You might also be able to get a Next To Me for relatively cheap on Facebook marketplace; and just replace the mattress and give it a good clean.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 06/11/2021 17:58

I bought a travel cot from asda (about £50) as whilst it wouldn't be a main bed after say 6 months, we would be still using it on hols afterwards.

We got a travel cot

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/11/2021 18:06

We used a Moses basket until about 4 months both times for day naps and overnight. It was only about £15 in the sale so not a big investment and was nicer than the pram carry cot which was heavy and rigid. After that we had a cot bed which worked until they were past 4 years. Second time round we used the same things but with new mattresses.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/11/2021 18:07

Just remembered we had a travel cot for the 4-12 months but and used for travel afterwards. That was also cheap, about £25 in the sale.

orangejuicer · 06/11/2021 18:08

We bought a large moses basket and that did us 9 months.

Somerandomgirl · 06/11/2021 18:41

We had moses basket and moved quickly to a cot (which is the bigger size and still using/fitting in 3 and half years later)..
You can do cot in bedroom and travel cot downstairs maybe if u have the space?
Or just put it always upstairs and have a baby camera with you
Whatever works x

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 06/11/2021 18:49

With my second and third I had a travel cot downstairs and a cot upstairs (though 3rd only slept on me, like a lot of babies). DC2 slept in a wrap (like a sling) a lot as dc1 was tiny so I stuck to her routine and he was along for the ride, but he was happy to sleep in the full size travel cot in the living room if we were at home (safer than a moses or carry cot with a small toddler also in the room).

DC1 had a moses and a carry cot but didn't sleep in either - on DH or I in the day and cot at night. She woke herself up in moses basket and carry cot by throwing her arms out, so full size cot avoided that.

We have the Kinderkraft Neste Up in the bedroom for nights, it was one of the cheaper next to me cots and it's been brilliant. We've just moved our son in to his own room at 6 months but he still had plenty of room left in it (and he's high percentile for height and weight).

If you can fit a cotbed in your room you can put them straight in that from birth then just move it to their room once they're older.

For downstairs we used the Kinderkraft Baby Lovi and loved it. He has just outgrown that though lengthwise at 6 months, although as I say he is high percentile. It lasted him longer than his pram carrycot

Nat6999 · 07/11/2021 00:10

Ds would only either cosleep or sleep in his bouncy chair, I ended up putting his bouncy chair in his cot at night if it was the only place I could get him to sleep, it was good when he had reflux.

MeadowHay · 07/11/2021 00:27

For overnight sleep post-6 months we use a cotbed that can be converted into a toddler bed by taking the sides off. No reason why you can't use that from birth. My DD is 3.5 and still in one, haven't even taken the sides down yet as she's happy as it is and I don't want to do anything to upset her good sleep especially as we've just had DC2. Her cousin was in this bed til she moved to a single bed at 5.5.

For daytime sleeps, with DD we used the pram carrycot - it's a Cosatto Wow and safe for occasional overnight sleep. It's quite small though so she outgrew this before she was 5 months old. Also some naps were in the bouncy chair. After that she napped in the pushchair attachment on the flattest setting in the hallway, or in a rocking cradle we had downstairs. Or in the Baby Bjorn carrier attached to DH. Or on my lap/in my arms/on the sofa! Or in the playpen. As she got bigger she napped in a Hauck travel cot in her own room - as she still slept overnight in our room.

Thank you ladies! These are all really helpful suggestions.

I think we’ve decided on a compact cot for upstairs sleeping, which will then be moved into her room when the time is right.

Daytime sleeping is still under debate, but I’m sure we’ll figure it out in time. We have space for a travel cot but didn’t realise they were suitable for regular sleeping? If they are, I’ve seen some that come with a bassinet on top, which will reduce the amount of items we need to buy as she grows.

Ahh decisions decisions.
