eating Camembert when pregnant?

Sorry ladies might be a stupid post. I had date night tonight with DH & we had cooked Camembert with bread to dip in, I thought it was completely ok to eat cooked Camembert (it was one shared between the two of us), but my sister has said her midwife told her to avoid it all together cooked or not??

I only ate a small bit, so I’m not worried. I’m just confused as I thought it was ok when cooked but my sisters midwife told her otherwise. Can anyone shed any light?? 😂😂

To cheese or not to cheese!!

You can have cooked Camembert. It says as much on the NHS website. Is your sister pregnant now? The rules change loads - my friend with a five year old was told she couldn’t have eggs, she really worried about me having them!

ButFirstTea · 05/11/2021 19:21

NHS website says if it has been cooked until steaming hot then it's safe to eat... And I've got some for my tea this weekend so I don't want to be told otherwise in the meantime Grin

shannonl26 · 05/11/2021 19:28

@TakeYourFinalPosition she’s only recently given birth that’s why I was so confused! My midwife also told me no runny eggs, yet someone I know was told runny eggs are fine asking as British lion mark. I don’t like runny eggs anyway so doesn’t bother me 😂 I swear every midwife has different rules!

@ButFirstTea honestly it was amazing, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mine 😂

Thank you for confirming ladies.

I've always eaten what I fancied. This is my 3rd baby and have always had a few steaks med rare, have runny eggs , caffeine, soft serve. Its obviously what you feel comfortable with etc

Matilda128 · 05/11/2021 20:38

The NHS says cooked camembert is fine. I recently moved to the Netherlands and here you can eat as much French cheese as you want- cooked or uncooked- as long as it's not made with with raw milk (which is very rare). And advice here is quite strict- for example you shouldn't eat any cinnamon and no runny eggs. X

HyphenCobra · 06/11/2021 09:18

I am having camembert later today. I eat runny eggs as don't like hard boiled.

I also had some of my raw cake batter yesterday after baking 😱😄

One pregnancy i was told NO PEANUTS!!! Another pregnancy, peanuts were fine and these pregnancies were within 9 months of each other, go figure 😂
Not bothered to look it up this time, will be having peanut butter later this week as was craving it!

Same!! 😂😂😂
DuneFan · 06/11/2021 09:27

Sounds like your respective midwives are making stuff up! Runny eggs are fine on the NHS guidance as long as they are lion stamped and so iscooked soft cheese . . www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/foods-to-avoid/

L1ttleb1t · 06/11/2021 09:34

I get confused by being told things are okay if they are "steaming hot" - what does that mean? when is steaming hot steaming enough?

I tend to absolutely nuke them out of anxiety it's not yet at lava temperature, and then it's pretty much overcooked and meh.

WheelieBinPrincess · 06/11/2021 09:37

@shas19 same! Never worried about it. You’re more likely to get listeria from bagged salad than cheese etc.

A got a Mr Whippy from a van when I was about eight months pregnant and the lady behind me told me off as apparently that’s a risk 🙄

furbabymama87 · 06/11/2021 10:12

You can eat it as long as its heated through and hot, not just a few seconds in the microwave.

If I bake I also lick the spoon aswell😂I could eat a mr whippy right now, with loads of sauce and peanuts/sprinkles

WhiteHorse92 · 06/11/2021 17:07

As others have said, NHS website says cooked Camembert is fine and so are runny eggs if they have the lion stamp. I ate cooked Camembert last year on Xmas Eve when I was 6 months pregnant and I also ate runny eggs and went to a steakhouse several times and had my steak rare, my baby is absolutely fine Smile

SW1amp · 06/11/2021 17:12

@HyphenCobra

The peanut thing was because they wanted to test a theory that eating peanuts while pregnant was causing peanut allergies in children

So they told women to avoid peanuts for ages to see if it reduced peanut allergies later on

It didn’t so the advice was changed back to let women eat peanuts

I’ve always taken it as guidance rather than gospel - it’s mostly guess work rather than having much scientific basis

redandwhite1 · 06/11/2021 19:41

I eat cooked Camembert, can't not it's too nice 😂

I ate cold Brie last week and I'm also still alive

shannonl26 · 06/11/2021 21:43

Thank you to all of you ladies! I really do appreciate the reassurance.

Cooked camembert is perfectly fine, and I also personally think the advice to avoid soft cheese is overly cautious. It's to do with food poisoning risk, but when have you ever had food poisoning from supermarket Brie that's made from pasteurised milk?

I also think cultural differences in food advice in pregnancy are really interesting! Something that's banned in one country is completely fine, even recommended, in another. Bonekrs.

GinnyBee · 07/11/2021 07:57

Also, listeria can be found in lots of things that are not advised against. You're probably more likely to have it from pre-cut fruit or prepared salads than cheese. Don't see those on the NHS list of things to avoid.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 07/11/2021 08:06

Its nearing christmas season so cooked camembert is almost a necessity in our house, I can't wait!

Time2Move · 07/11/2021 08:09

When I was pregnant and given a leaflet telling me all the things I couldn't eat, I asked my GP how seriously to take it. Her answer: "well most of my GP friends ignored it completely".
Why not learn what the risks are and make your own judgment, rather than slavishly follow this week's rule?

sjxoxo · 07/11/2021 08:10

I’m in France and I’m fairly sure most camembert is made with pasteurised milk..? It’s certainly not on our red list here. My midwife & gp are more concerned with unwashed salad & cat poo! I don’t know if it’s the same in Uk but as I am negative for toxoplasmosis having never had it, I have to do a blood test once a month, every month. Lots of talk about my cats potential to give me toxoplasmosis, no talk of ruling out Camembert.. blasphemy! 😉 xo

ohfook · 07/11/2021 08:12

In between each of my pregnancies the nhs advice about what you can and can't do has changed and tbh I find it quite infantilising.

Read expecting better if you're interested in the actual risk of the ear things we're told not to do. It's incredibly well researched and probably the only pregnancy/baby book I found useful.

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/11/2021 09:01

I agree with that @ohfook I found that a great read, but I posted on here about having a rare steak with a small glass of red on a special occasion at 6 months pregnant on here- and got a massive pile on. Some posters went so far as to tell me I didn’t deserve to have a baby if I was already taking this selfish and risks with it, one told me if my midwife was aware she’d have ‘no choice’ but to pass the info on SS!

Actually it really upset me, but a few nice sensible posters contacted me off the boards asking if I was ok.

Steamedhams · 07/11/2021 14:08

I have been very rebellious and have eaten all sorts while on honeymoon in iceland including:
Caffeine
Runny eggs which weren't lion
Cold brie
Rare steak
Raw horse
Rare whale
Puffin
Sushi
Uncooked pepperoni
What may have been unpasteurized goat cheese (I didn't check)

I think basically everything on the NHS naughty list except pate and shark

We even went to some hot springs for 2 days although it was bath temp and I only did the hot tub for about 10 min.

....don't tell my midwife

Like others have said the risk from bagged salad is probably higher. I guarantee the ladies in Japan are still eating sushi and french women are still eating camembert while pregnant. I am more concerned about things like takeaways for food poisoning than an upmarket restaurant or supermarket cheese.
