Low dose aspirin - Should I take?

Hi everyone, hoping for some advice!
I've had 3 mc in the past year and am now currently pregnant again (6 + 6). I have no dc and have a high BMI. With having multiple mc I have been referred to the recurring miscarriage clinic however my appointment isn't until next year. I've read a lot about low dose aspirin being helpful since I have 2 risk factors so I started taking 75mg when I got my BFP. I'm starting to worry now though as I have asked my GP and the midwife at my scan today about the low dose aspirin and neither of them have said they advise it. The midwife got in touch with the recurring miscarriage clinic and they said because they haven't seen me yet they wouldn't prescribe it/advise it either. I guess I'm looking for some reassurance that taking it won't do any harm? I'm worried if I stop it now it might result in another mc as this is around the time I lost with one of my previous mc and another was even before this stage. Feeling super anxious.

I've been taking aspirin since 12 weeks (in 14 now). I was worried like you at first but I made sure I quizzed the midwife and she said because it's such a low dose all it does it thin your blood, and makes sure that baby and placenta get enough. It says on the packet aswell that it can be good for people who've had a history of strokes or heart attacks (due to blood thinning).

What worried me was them saying don't go into a pharmacy because they will refuse you when they see your pregnant. I was happy to do what the midwife said, I figured that they know best for baby and I didn't like the idea of my baby not growing properly so I guess you just have to think that. Xx

I started taking 75mg aspirin after my second miscarriage and am currently 29 weeks pregnant so have been taking it for the entirety of this pregnancy. When I told my midwife at my booking in appointment she was fine with it and I was actually upped to 150mg due to my high BMI so I wouldn't worry too much. Fingers crossed for a sticky bean for you xx

Suprima · 05/11/2021 17:51

It’s common standard practice at every recurrent miscarriage clinic

My doctor (based at the Portland) supported me in taking it

needarainbow · 05/11/2021 18:14

@rach1stbaby Oh fingers crossed that it doesn't do any harm then, even if it doesnt do any good! 🤞 I did read about people getting refused at the pharmacy. Hopefully since your midwife agreed about it taking it they've provided you with a prescription? Congratulations on your BFP!

@Starsong82 That is so reassuring! Thanks for sharing. Did you get told to start taking it or did you decide yourself? Are BMI and recurring mc your only 2 risk factors? You must be thrilled to be at 29 weeks! Huge congrats! I feel like I can't allow myself to get excited yet. Been hurt too many times before.

@Suprima yeah I had read about it being advised to loads of people which is why I started taking it in the first place. Its just super worrying that noone medical has said yes, that's the right thing to do!

I’ve been taking 150mg this whole pregnancy due to 2 previous MMC’s. I’m now 38 weeks and feel that the aspirin has been a miracle and has gotten me this far. When I booked in with my midwife she was okay with me being on it. I know a lot of women have had success with it so I’m very glad I took it! Have stopped taking it now from 36 weeks as per my midwifes recommendation.

boymum88 · 05/11/2021 18:29

Was a thread the other week on this, seems lots of women take it off their own backs after researching the pro and cons. From what I read I believe it's a drug that will do no harm but can help if that makes sense. Some nhs trust even recommend low dose to all mothers

marplemead · 05/11/2021 18:37

I was referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic after 2 consecutive MCs (3 in total). I was prescribed progesterone for the first trimester and then told to take 150mg aspirin from 12 weeks. I bought 300mg supermarket ones and split them. I don't know if it helped, but my 1 month-old DS is lying on me right now.

Starsong82 · 05/11/2021 18:37

@needarainbow I started taking it off my own back after lots of reading up, it seemed to me there was a chance it could help and no real risks to taking it at such a low dose. I'm not sure if that's what made this pregnancy stick but I've absolutely no regrets! Age and BMI are my main risk factors for hitting the recommendation at booking in for 150mg aspirin, depending on your BMI you may want to also request a high dose folic acid prescription as well from your GP as the content in a standard pregnancy vitamin is not enough for us higher BMI mums to be x

I had to take low dose aspirin throughout my pregnancy due to having coeliac disease. It was never really explained to me why I needed it but it didn't do me or baby any harm

Midwife told me to take 75mg of aspirin, and I've been on it for a few months now. I buy the supermarket ones on the yellow packet, they're for heart attack prevention and the correct dosage. Just take it at night is the only extra advice I was given by the midwife

JustOneMoreStep · 05/11/2021 19:16

I was advised by midwife to take 75mg from 12 weeks to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia. I think its fairly common in pregnancy. It's also used at low doses as a first line in fertility treatment in certain circumstances.

RosieLeeD · 05/11/2021 19:30

I have a history of miscarriages and I was on 75mg as well as immunosuppressants but I had a little spotting so I was advised to stop it and I will be advised whether or not to recommence after my scan which is next Thursday. I'm currently 6 weeks

GinnyBee · 05/11/2021 20:02

I've been taking it after two miscarriages. I tried asking my GP whether it was safe to try, but they didn't give an answer either way. I'm taking 150mg at bedtime.

I saw my midwife for my booking in appointment when I was 10+4 and told her I was taking it, and she confirmed it's safe to take, and was even a little bit impressed. I'll be 12 weeks tomorrow and will be furthest I've got in any pregnancy, that milestone was passed at 8+4 when I had a scan of a healthy little blob.

Sassymcsasserson · 05/11/2021 22:06

I took it after my midwife advised me too due to a higher BMI. Had problems with pregnancy and birth but nothing relating to the aspirin. I was consultant led and she was impressed the midwife had already advised me to take it.

Yogity · 05/11/2021 22:24

I was prescribed 150mg due to a higher BMI so I've taken it throughout. (Now 39+3 and induction scheduled for tomorrow!)

I started taking before my booking appointment following two consecutive mc and like you have no dc yet. As PP said sometimes the pharmacist can refuse it to pg ladies without a prescription but Tesco sell 75mg tabs for people with family history of stroke etc. which is what I initially bought.
As you say you've had recurrent losses (so sorry to read this Flowers) and a higher BMI there's every chance you will be prescribed it anyway.

Moominmiss · 05/11/2021 23:04

I took 150mg off my own back following 4 miscarriages in a row. I took it from 1dpo.

When I saw my midwife she checked with a consultant who said had I not already been taking it she’d have started me on it.

I took it until 36 weeks. I then had a c section at 37+4 and my 9 week old baby is now lying asleep next to me!

I 100% credit the aspirin. My consultant said at such a low dose (150mg is the new nhs recommended dose), it can do no harm but may do some good so is often prescribed on that basis anyway.

lawandgin · 06/11/2021 00:01

I wouldn't worry at all. I was on blood thinning injections from 4-9 weeks, 75mg aspirin from 9-12 weeks and now I'm on 150mg from 12 weeks. 75mg is such a low dose and it won't harm you or baby and you may even find you're advised to increase later. Hope everything works out OP.

needarainbow · 12/11/2021 14:39

Thank you all so much for your responses! All your positive experiences have definitely given me more confidence in taking it so I've kept it going. Had a scan yesterday and everything looked good (7+5) so going to keep going and hope this is my sticky bean!
