Hi,
I’m 32 and currently 6 weeks 3 days pregnant with a much longed for first child. When I told my partner I was pregnant he basically told me if I had this baby I would be ruining both our lives and he would no longer want to be with me. I’ve continued with the pregnancy anyway. Due to his coldness and complete disregard for me in this situation something told me to go and have std checks. I went last Tuesday and this Monday they called to tell me then all were fine accept my test for chlamydia which is positive. Once I got past the sheer devastation of him giving me this. ( it can’t be from anyone else as I was tested before him and all negative) I am no very concerned for the well being of my baby. The GUM clinic prescribed me azithromicin. They know I’m pregnant and said ‘ we can’t test on pregnant women but we know this is ok’. It’s a short course of 3 days 4 tablets the first day and then 2 each day for 1 days after. I have taken the first 4 tablets yesterday. I’ve seen fell into a black hole of google with some articles saying they are safe and others saying they increase risk of miscarriage and potentially birth defects. I have requested a call from my GP but have yet to have this. Has anyone else had this medicine in pregnancy and was everything ok? The fact my now ex partner doesn’t want this baby and has given me an std which the treatment for could cause a risk to the pregnancy is just a little too much for me right now. I am sitting right waiting for my GP to contact me but in the meantime just wanted to see if anyone on here had taken this antibiotic in pregnancy. Thank you for reading Flowers

I’m so sorry this has happened to you.
I am not medical so get proper advice but I did work for the company that originally licenced Azithromycin (Pfizer) and promoted it into GUM and STI clinics. While very few medicines are tested on pregnant women it was promoted as generally safe in pregnancy so I don’t think you should be too worried about that.
Do you have support?

Quite apart from getting your STD fixed, you need to get another serious problem fixed. Your dp. He is an utter cunt. Please get rid of him OP and do not put his name on the birth certificate.

Good luck.

Please don't be embarrassed. Its happened to more people than you could ever imagine

Its an antibiotic and also used to treat many other infections so i wouldn't think there was anything to worry about. Listen to the nurse at the clinic who said it was fine to take, rather than google. At the booking in appointment with the midwife they do screen all mothers for STDs and prescribe treatment if any of the results are positive, there will be many more pregnant women going through, or who have went through this treatment too.

Your health is really important just now for baby to thrive

Hey, thank you for responding. Yes I do have an amazing support system. It’s just a lot to deal with right now.

@Lauren0902 yes your right. This probably happens to a lot of women but they just don’t go on the forums to report it haha. I will just get w second opinion from my GP before I take the rest but I don’t know if they even matters at this point as I’ve already took half the dose. I think maybe the whole situation has just stressed me out so much I’m being irrational. Thank you for responding Flowers

With pregnancy its unethical to test drugs on pregnant women, but there will have been no adverse reactions to the other pregnant women that have been treated.

There's also the risk that chlamydia would do to your new baby to consider.

I'm sorry you are going through this, best of luck with your pregnancy, I hope you have already dumped him, he's a vile excuse for a human being!

Wnikat · 03/11/2021 15:50

Please take the rest of the dose, the chlamydia will be much more dangerous to the baby than the antibiotics.

Nibblonian · 03/11/2021 18:35

You might find the following website useful:

www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/Azithromycin/

Untreated chlamydia would pose a much higher risk to you and your baby than the antibiotic.

Wishing you a calm and happy pregnancy :)

T0rt0ise · 03/11/2021 18:45

Was going to recommend BUMPs as suggested by previous poster and agree that untreated Chlamydia will be far more dangerous than the antibiotics. Please don't delay taking them.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 03/11/2021 19:56

So I know it’s not in English but this is the website for the database doctors and pharmacists in France use to check if there are issues prescribing particular medicines to pregnant and breastfeeding women. It says there is a fair amount of data on pregnant women taking azithromicin and nothing to suggest it is harmful has been found. They can’t do proper double blind clinical trials on pregnant women but they do collect data on outcomes when women require treatment for things. Which means loads of women need this antibiotic during pregnancy and as far as they know the rates of miscarriage or birth defects are no higher in women who needed treatment compared to women who did not require treatment. awww.lecrat.fr/articleSearch.php?id_groupe=12

Thank you for all your responses. You’ve been so helpful! I’m a lot calmer now and have continued with treatment.

Glad to hear you've kept up treatment. Make sure it's gone, the danger is at birth.

You're not the first, nor will you be the last - antibiotics will be fine. Congratulations and enjoy your pregnancy and baby.
