Gestational diabetes inductions

Does anyone have any positive stories? Just deciding what to opt for in terms of c section or induction. I currently have a c section booked in for my due date as I’ve heard so many negative induction stories and became terrified at the prospect of an induction. Now I’m thinking I dunno what’s best! Hoping he comes naturally before my due date.

i had to have a induction because of this. But it was so a to b ,went in night before. They monitored me ,had my induction at 8 baby by 1am simple.Nothing bad happened

rosydreams · 01/11/2021 16:37

i meant 8 am then 1pm derp lol but yes absolutely fine

I opted for induction as it was my 4th baby and thought it would be ok (other dc came spontaneously and no GD). Big mistake, it was awful and ended in EMCS so if I had my time again I would choose c section. Sorry I can’t be more positive but I wish I’d listened to friends who told me to go for c section over induction!

mistypop · 01/11/2021 16:47

@3to4 Thanks! I’ve been advised by so many to opt for c section and that was initially what I planned to do as I know inductions can be so difficult especially for first babies, and also with the extra complications of me being on insulin and having to be on some kind of drip. I’m just thinking will I regret not trying for a vaginal birth. Also my MIL made a joke about me being ‘too posh to push’ at the weekend which I know was meant light heartedly but actually upset me and I keep thinking about it!

@rosydreams Thank you that’s good to know

I'm in the same position!

I'm opting for a section, purely because the possible long induction time (5/6 days on the GD UK FB Paige) and the ending up emergency section anyway, along with my hospital not catering for GD 🤨 hope you managed to chose the right option for you!!

growingmybaby · 01/11/2021 16:56

Page, not Paige 😂

So annoying when people say things like that! You have to do what you feel is right. I was was on insulin too 18 units a night but didn’t need a drip so you don’t necessarily need one just to reassure you. I was induced at 37+6 because my baby wasn’t growing so I think maybe I had so many problems because it was early. I didn’t have her until day 4 and it was quite traumatic to be honest and took me a little while to get over. My other births were all very textbook so it was surprising it went so badly! It’s tricky one though.

I was induced at 39 weeks, I went in at 8am and they used a pessary, they checked me on the evening and said I was favourable to have my waters broken the following morning and to get some rest before then, then through the night I started having contractions, they took me to the labour ward at 7am and broke my waters, within minutes my contractions turned very strong and regular and I progressed very quickly, I had an epidural and I'm not sure if that slowed things down but i stayed at 7cm dilated for quite a while then had baby at 5am so just under 24 hours from when they broke my waters, because I had an epidural though I was able to sleep for a few hours until it was time to push :)

DaisyDozyDee · 01/11/2021 17:10

I was induced at 38 weeks with my second. The first pessary was a pretty grim experience, and it took a long time to get going. I walked and walked all day on the second day to get things moving.
I starting to get a bit uncomfortable by about 8.30pm, then my waters broke and he was born about 90 minutes later. I wanted an epidural, but it was all over and the baby was feeding by the time the anaesthetist arrived.

ItsTheTreasure · 01/11/2021 17:12

My GD baby is 6 months now, I was induced with him at 38 weeks. Well, I say induced but actually when they examined me before putting the pessary in I was already 2cm (he was 3rd baby) so they decided to break my waters instead. It was difficult because he wasn't ready to come out so he wasn't down low enough, but long (boring, not scary) story short I was put on the drip and it was all fine. The drip was started at 6pm ish and I had him by 10pm, and had a few stitches.

A couple of points for me though, I wasn't on a high dose of insulin so although I almost got put on a sliding scale, they decided against it. He was my 3rd baby and previous labours were quite quick and no complications.

I had been induced with 1st baby too, but no GD. That was also ok, and labour progressed with no drip. I know this probably doesn't help much, I just wanted you to read good stories too. Do what you feel is best for you, there's no right or wrong. Hope all goes well

Ahhh it’s so hard to know what’s best.
At the moment (37+5) im actually only on 6 units of insulin before bed and 10 before breakfast. So im not sure if I’ll have to be on an insulin drip, just assumed from what docs had previously mentioned might happen. I have an appt with my consultant tomorrow so I guess I’ll know more then but don’t want to go in clueless about what I want.
@ItsTheTreasure if you don’t mind could you explain to me what is a sliding scale when it comes to insulin? A doctor mentioned to me this might happen, but I forgot to ask what it meant. Is it just a gradual increase? Or is it something to do with what will happen in labour? Sorry Blush

Also, I’m confused that they’re letting me go to 40 weeks seeing as I’m on insulin, everyone else seems to be induced before this?

ItsTheTreasure · 01/11/2021 17:58

If I'm honest, I'm not exactly sure as I didn't actually have it. This is a good link and website if you haven't seen it already www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/sliding-scale/

DaisyDozyDee · 01/11/2021 17:58

Different areas have different protocols, but also the risk changes with age among other things, so the advice you get will be taking into account lots of different factors.
If you’re in your 40s, they’re much more likely to recommend early induction than if you are in your 30s.

3to4 · 01/11/2021 18:04

@mistypop I would’ve been allowed to 40 weeks of growth scans had looked ok and the insulin was keeping my numbers in range. Unfortunately my last few scans showed little growth so they decided to induce me there and then. I’m 39. They look at it case by case I think.
