I'm such an idiot!!!

I'm 12+1 and was putting tinsel round an area of kiddies artwork (I'm a childminder) and stood on a chair to stick the tinsel up. Got distracted and slipped off. I must have knocked my head a little as a bit lightheaded and it hurts but apart from that, just got a little twinge down my side, probably from twisting. No bleeding and phoned midwife who agrees it's probably just twisting but is letting me go on Friday to a local hospital where she'll be, for her to check on baby.

I just feel so stupid for putting my baby at risk like that. Am I the only idiot or have others been standing on chairs and acting like normal too?

Oh Looney - its easy to just do things without thinking or because there is no-one else around and its just easier. Sounds like LO is fine. Don't be too hard on yourself - just try and remember the lesson for the next 32 weeks!

Hope you are both is fine - will be good to get reassured on Friday.

I haven't been standing on chairs, but I have taken a bad tumble, twice, during this pregancy. First time was at work, when someone didn't put a box back where it belonged, and over I went, the other time was last night on the train platform, when I tripped and ended up on all fours. I haven't been to the Dr/Midwife either time, but do feel sore and bruised!

HeadHeartorHormones · 11/12/2007 17:16

Ouch! You are not an idiot. Nine months is a long time and although with hindsight you may not have done this, you really can't avoid all risks for this amount of time either. Hope your midwife puts your mind and conscience at rest. I think it is a rare woman who gets through pregnancy without a few of the normal falls or bumps that are part of life - fortunately for the vast majority it has no serious consequence.

sabinar · 11/12/2007 17:40

eh. I've been falling over all over the place since I've been pregnant... I have dodgy ankles and gave one of them the biggest sprain ever when I was about 33wks.

I'm now almost 36wks and have been up on chairs trying to get curtains hung this week. Very carefully though!

not that I'm encouraging this kind of behaviour, of course! A sprained ankle combined with a big bump is not a great combination!

Feel better soon!

Thanks all, you've made me feel less of a prat!

widgetsmummy - please don't tell me I've got 32 weeks left to go!!! (hopefully more like 28 )

Well, just about to hoover then clean the kitchen then all ready again for opening in the morning and I can put my feet up the rest of the evening (dh's turn to do dinnerm )

Oh Looney you plonker! Glad you're ok. I stand on chairs frequently.

CorrieDale · 11/12/2007 19:10

No, but only because I once stood on a foldin chair to hang some curtains. The chair folded around me and I had a bruise that covered my entire thigh.

I did, however, fall down the stairs during my last pregnancy because I wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing. I knocked my coccyx out of alignment which was excrutiatingly painful (worse than labour now i come to think of it) and cost a bomb in osteo fees.

LOONEYplayingachristmasTUNEy · 11/12/2007 19:13
  • it was hanging up TINSEL that did it lol Anyway, I've left you a message to FB me!

Corrie - OMG, you must have been so scared after falling down the stairs - presume all was ok then! I reckon I've absolutely nothing to worry about HOWEVER I'm not going to turn down the bit of reassurance I've been offered by the midwife (it's been a very up and down pregnancy so far with scares and being convinced all was over a few weeks ago)

Yes - with dd1 - fell down the stairs - proper flight of stairs - manage to stop myself just before the bottom by grabbing rail and smacking into the wall and then fell out on the street - same morning early pregnancy.

Dd2 - fell down the stairs carrying 2yo dd1. only about 5 stairs but still hurt myself.

THen lat in the pregnancy with dd2 - climbing on chair to see in cupboard - rickety old chair I had no business standing on - chair went over as I stood on side and I landed crash on my side.

Each time dds have been okay but I just do it without thinking.

Ds2- I fell down stairs and sprained my foot at about 25 weeks. At 30 weeks I tripped over my toe and sprawled headfirst into the road.Stopped traffic that time.
Ds3-at about 36 weeks I was stood on a chair cleaning windows and stepped backwards off it,landed on my bottom and turned him from breech.
Ds1-I lay sprawled on a sofa eating like Ermentrude the cow for most of it, so didn't give myself the opportunity to fall off or over anything.

CorrieDale · 12/12/2007 13:57

No damage at all to baby - fortunately I bumped down the stairs on my bum so I knew that baby would be just fine, if a little bit jolted. And I was too busy crying for my own pain to worry about baby (what a shocking thing to admit!). DH kept saying 'it's just the shock' that was making me cry. It so was not! As he later had to admit.

nooonit · 12/12/2007 15:06

I tripped over absolutely nothing and landed right on my bump in the middle of our concrete drive - arms and legs waving like a stranded turtle - when I was about 31 weeks!
Had the usual panic ( arrrgh! my knee hurts, have I ripped the one pair of trousers I fit in, is the baby ok?) until feeling movements when I calmed down a bit!
Think they're better protected in there than we give them credit for, not that it stops you from feeling a bit shakey!

lucysnowe · 12/12/2007 17:28

I climbed over a greasy stile when I was 8 weeks or so and slipped just when I had one leg over and got the middle of the stile right in the ladybits. Both DH and I were completely horrified, but the bub was fine. I have been avoiding stiles since tho!

Sorry, just noticed all the other posts. Sounds quite common for us to get a bit clumsy when pg then . Glad all was ok for you guys. Turns out it's a VERY good job I went to get checked by midwife. Long story but this thread explains - had blood test on Friday when had check and then got a call from hospital yesterday telling me I needed to go in for an anti-d asap - just hope it wasn't too late (fell Tuesday and should have been checked that day by the sounds of it).
