Large cyst

Hi all

Had a scan at 8 weeks and found an 11x10x9cm cyst. I'm being referred to a gynae but the sonographer seemed quite concerned. She said she could see it wasn't cancerous but thought it could need to be drained incase it twists. Very nauseous at the thought of this.

Holding on to hope here - has anyone had a cyst this big just go away? Or any other experiences to share? First pregnancy and really scared.

I had friend a number of years ago have one removed when she was 12 weeks pregnant. They did it by key hole and everything went really well. He’s now 12.

Thank you, good to hear! There seems to be a few options but unsure what will be recommended for me. Worried about how long this gynae referral could take 😔

I had a similar sized cyst on one ovary and a smaller one on the other. After a bit of faffing and an mri scan consultant wasn't concerned at all and kept me low risk pregnancy etc. Just had instructions to take any severe pain seriously and go straight to hospital & tell them about the cyst in case it twisted. It had no impact on pregnancy or birth. I had follow up ultrasound about 8 weeks after birth and both cysts were gone (they were still there at 38 weeks), consultant doesn't expect any other issues and discharged me.

Where is the cyst? A typical uterus is 7.6 x 4.5 x 3.0 cm. It would have swelled slightly by 8 weeks but not much. An ovary is typically less than half this size again. So the cyst is significantly larger than the uterus and would dwarf an ovary? Did they mean millimetres? I don’t want to worry you but there’s absolutely no way they could tell it wasn’t cancerous, that’s from a biopsy only. I’m surprised they were even able to tell you it was a cyst. They would normally refer to it a “mass” until they knew more.

@SweetBabyCheeses99 certainly centimetres, it was enormous on the screen and absolutely dwarfed my baby. She said it wasn't cancerous as it was clear I.e black on the scan? It was central and higher than my uterus, she couldn't tell which ovary. She asked to do a transvaginal to tell which, but at that point I just felt sick and wanted to leave

It sounds like a simple (fluid filled) cyst, that's how she knows it's not cancerous. They can get big but are easy to drain, I have a 4cm one and a 7cm dermoid on my left ovary which will need removing at my c section in March. I would definitely have a transvaginal scan if you can so they can get a better loo

Stupid phone!

A better look and ask for a chat with the consultant who can tell you exactly what needs to happen. Don't panic though, cysts won't harm your baby and are easily fixed. Flowers

I had a large cyst when pregnant with my second son. It was removed by keyhole surgery when I was 8 weeks pregnant. I had to use hormone pessaries to help prevent miscarriage and my son is 11 years old and healthy now

This is pretty unhelpful. Big ovarian cysts aren’t uncommon and are easily spotted on USS. There are also features visible on USS which make malignancy more/less likely so perhaps that’s why the sonographer felt able to give the reassurance they did.

Thank you ladies, google seems to be a combination of 'they'll try and leave it if you're pregnant' and 'they took mine out' so not really sure what to expect! Very nervous
