Trying to decide between Eloise and Charlotte as we would like a name that works in both French and English. Already have a daughter with a name beginning with E so wonder if Eloise would be too similar. With Charlotte I don't like it when it gets abbreviated to Charlie so wondered if any of you have daughters with this name and, if so, has it been abbreviated to Charlie. Thanks.

Charlie isn't the worst. I had a friend and it was always shortened to Lottie, by almost everyone

Anna8888 · 11/12/2007 12:18

Héloïse is the French spelling, which avoids the problem of two names beginning with E.

I think both names are very pretty - I have the same issue of needing names that work in both English and French - and I have friends who have Héloïses and Charlottes. I don't think Charlotte is generally considered pretty by all - I've heard a lot of negative reactions to it.

We liked Charlotte, but chose Scarlett in the end for dd3, in part because of the Charly thing, but also because it's a bit different too!

Hulababy · 11/12/2007 12:27

I prefer Charlotte to Eloise. Anyone I have known called Charlotte always had it shortened to Lottie.

Anarchymummy · 11/12/2007 14:30

I like Eloise as it's fairly unusual,Charlotte is a lovely name but again everyone (I know) always shortens it to Charli.

Gemy · 11/12/2007 14:53

I prefer Charlotte and in my experience has always been shortened to Lottie which, I think, is a very pretty name in it's own right. And if you start shortening it to Lottie yourself, she won't end up a Charlie at all.

sweetheart · 11/12/2007 14:58

I know 3 Charlotte's and none of them are ever called Charlie. I do know another girl called Charlie but I think her actual name is Charlie not Charlotte! I'll have to check that out now

Anyway, I also agree that Lottie is a lovely name.

Not to keen on Eloise to be honest.

Rudi - We liked Charlotte but also chose Scarlett! Have only heard of one other and she gets it shortened to Letty.
NK - I do like both names but Eloise always makes me think of that song...

Eeek! My daughter is Lottie, not Charlotte, what's wrong with Lottie paula ?!!
We have a Charlie in daughter's class who is a Charlotte (I didn't know this for nearly a year!) but I have only heard her mother call her Charlotte when telling her off!!
I agree, if you shorten it to Lottie (assuming you like Lottie!), then all friends will follow.
BTW, I chose Lottie as preferred it to Charlotte, isn't there a European way of spelling it too, Lotte??

LoveAngelGabriel · 11/12/2007 17:39

I know a Charlotte who gets called Lottie. Both lovely, classic names, imo.

crokky · 11/12/2007 17:45

NKd1167739100921 - personally I would not go for 2 names starting with the same letter for 2 children. My ILs have this and are always opening eachothers post...minor problem...depends how you feel about it

kerala · 11/12/2007 17:48

I also really like Lottie - in fact I was tempted by Charlotte because she could be Lottie. Didnt choose it in the end tho.

I would avoid the same first letter I know a family who had a Hailey and Heidi and postal nightmare.

MumtoCharlotteMay · 11/12/2007 23:22

My 6 month old dd is a Charlotte and I think it's the prettiest name in the world, obviously lol! I loved Charlotte because it's completely classic, heard of but not over-used and there are options to shorten it if you want them. For example I call my dd Lottie, but her grandad calls her Charly May (imagine it with a strong cockney accent lol.) I'm not a HUGE fan of Charly and I don't call he it myslef and never will, but I don't mind others using it. I prefer Lottie, Charlotte for when she's older. I think it's a very pretty, classic name and I'm really happy I chose it.

Not overly keen on Eloise, what about something like Georgia/jorja if you want a french/english name?

LikerabbitsBX · 11/12/2007 23:27

Kaylaigh - said as Kayla

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 11/12/2007 23:29

prefer lottie to charlotte
not keen on charlie and know a few
Eloise beautiful

Elkat · 12/12/2007 19:58

I've got an Eloise, so a bit biased! I think it is lovely, but be prepared for it to be shortened to Ellie. We don't use that, but lots of other people do, and it is very annoying. But then the same can be said of Charlotte (which we were very keen on, but rejected for the same reasons as you!) Whilst you might choose Lottie, it is entirely possible that your child might choose Charlie when she is older - and from experience, there is nothing you can do about that!

other French / English ideas are .. Amelie and Annabel. I like both of those too!

Heated · 12/12/2007 20:05

Both lovely so you can't make a wrong choice here but overall I do prefer Charlotte/ Lottie as I think it the more classically beautiful & enduring name whilst Eloise is going through a bit of 'surge'.

My niece is called "Squeezy Eloise-y" .

klzmar88 · 14/12/2007 10:48

If i have a girl, we are going to be calling her Katlin-Marie, what do u think 2 dat?
xx

NKd1167739100921 · 14/12/2007 11:25

Thanks for all your responses. My husband doesn't like Lottie so wondering if we call her Charlotte if there is any chance of her remaining Charlotte and not getting abbreviated. Anna8888 - thanks for suggesting Heloise but we probably wouldn't as the English side of the family would have big problems with the spelling! Elkat - wouldn't go for those names though I like Amelie as too similar to other names in the family. Klz - like Katlin-Marie for your daughter.
