12 week scan - movement

Hi ladies, I had my 12 week scan a few weeks ago and noticed that baby didn’t move unless the sonographer pressed down really hard and shook my stomach a bit. Even then, he just kicked his legs a few times then went back to being completely still.

Since then, all I have seen are comments of people saying there baby was wriggly, dancing and wouldn’t stay still for scan.

This is my 3rd pregnancy after 2 miscarriages and I am so afraid that something was/is wrong.

Has anyone had a scan where baby didn’t really move and gone on to have a healthy baby??

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had a private scan at 9 weeks & the sonographer had to literally shake and push on my stomach repeatedly to get baby to move, it was really brutal! But all of my subsequent scans haven't raised any issues.

I'm now 37 weeks & baby is VERY active so I wouldn't worry. If there were any problems they would've been highlighted at the scan & further investigations would've been suggested.

I'm in my 4th pregnancy after 3 miscarriages and I had exactly the same fear!

12 week scan he was really quiet and even the sonographer commented on how well behaved they were because it meant she was able to get all her readings. I just sat there praying he would move just to give me some hope he was okay even though his heartbeat and measurements were all okay.

I'm currently 30 weeks into this pregnancy and now it feels like he's going to come bursting out of my chest!

As long as your sonographer was happy with the scan and all his measurements I'm sure you'll be absolute fine :) I know how stressful it can be after loss, lord knows I've probably driven my husband mad with my anxieties, but in a few months all the stress will be worth it.

At all of my scans so far baby has been asleep. As in, sound asleep, didnt want to wake up.
I was so worried. The sonographer had to press hard and do the belly jiggle thing and eventually baby did move. But only to turn over and go back to sleep.
Seems to be a reoccurring theme when I have a scan if Im honest.
Now 34 weeks and baby is very active alot if the time.
If they were concerned they will say. At least baby was in a good position for all the measurements to be taken for you 😊

At my earlier scans, baby didn't move in particular at a 10-week scan sonographer commented that baby was sleeping I was worried about this I also had 2 miscarriages directly before this pregnancy.

Baby was very active at my 14 weeks scan and then was sleeping through entire anatomy scan at 21 wks scan after being extremely active in terms of kicking in the waiting room before the scan.

I'm now 23 weeks and baby is very active most days in terms of movement

I think you just caught your baby during an inactive period, its hard not to worry but if there was something to worry about I think they would tell you.

Ds2 was fast asleep and barely moved when I had my dating scan, I remember being worried as DS1 was so lively during his dating scan. Sonographer wasn't concerned.

At my 12 week scan baby would not move at all. They were in the wrong position for the NT screening. It didn’t matter how much I wiggled, shook them about, poked, prodded or how much the ultrasound tech prodded - baby wasn’t moving.

At the 20 week scan, they were just about to do the head measurement when baby decided they would do a lovely pirouette. They waited until baby stopped spinning and tried to get the measurement again, baby decided to turn and face the camera, then look away and start head banging. At my 26 week growth scan, baby wouldn’t stop wiggling their legs as they tried to get a leg measurement. At the 28 week growth scan, they’d hidden their head and would move their body but wouldn’t bring their head out of hiding. At my 32 week growth scan, baby pulled both their legs right into their body, wound up and kicked so hard they knocked the camera off my stomach. The ultrasound tech also said they were struggling by to her a photo and I said baby didn’t like having their photo taken, baby decided to look at the camera but not quickly enough to capture the image.

I’m 34 weeks now and baby is currently beating me up from the inside. They’re particularly active at 4am. You’ve probably just got an awkward bugger like me.

Thank you so much ladies! Your messages have really reassured me. Some of them even made me laugh! I guess everyone is different. It really is hard to relax after you’ve had losses. You have all definitely put me at ease. I really appreciate it.

It’s my first pregnancy, and at my 12 week scan, I had to keep standing up to shake the baby awake. The sonographer wasn’t concerned at all. At my 16 week appointment the midwife was laughing about how wriggly and kicky the baby was.

Hello, congratulations on your pregnancy I'm currently 22+2 with 3rd baby. I really wouldn't worry about lack of movement at this stage the somatic nervous systems isn't developed for some time yet and lack of movement at this stage isn't relative to overall health. P. S I'm a midwife just as a side note. It's perfectly understandable to be worried about the health of your pregnancy especially considering history and its easy to compare you pregnancy to others but I hope this gives you some reassurance. Of course If you develope any concerns (I.e abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding etc) please contact the Epu.
