My doctor has said it is my decision whether or not to take the glucose/diabetes test as I have no risk factors - would you do it/not do it & thoughts would be helpful.

If I had no risk factors I personally wouldn't do it. I've had to do it in my first pregnancy and my pregnancy this time round due to my BMI. The glucose test in itself is quite unpleasant and you spend a lot of time sitting around to then have your blood taken for a second time.

If you wanted to do it for peace of mind then go for it, but if you don't have any risk factors and they haven't booked you in for an appointment then there's really no need as it's unlikely you'll have gestational diabetes

I wouldn't if I didn't have any rusk factors.

I've had it in 4 pregnancies, BMI and having big babies flaged me up. The fasting doesn't bother me but it's an extremely boring process and hospital chairs were not kind to my spd hips. All mine have been within normal ranges each time.

Honestly I'd have it. My bmi at check in with the midwife was 19, and I've just found out I have gestational diabetes at 26 weeks. I'm active, eat a lot of the GD diet anyway, and haven't gained much weight, and still came out positive. Didn't have any big symptoms either - a bit fatigued and warm, and a bit thirsty but figured that was just normal pregnancy.

I have no risk factors and am very healthy and active and still have GD - diagnosed after having some very light symptoms at 28 weeks. Since then I’ve heard of a few people with no risk factors getting it so personally I would do the test just to be safe. Xx

I would 100% do it. Whilst you don't have any risk factors this doesn't mean you definitely won't have it. Id do anything to keep me and my baby safe

MissLC · 27/10/2021 10:42

I agree with the majority so far, if you've got no risk factors and no symptoms then i wouldn't do it.
The test is not that nice, the nurse struggled to get blood from me due to the fasting and the glucose drink is the most disgusting thing. If you're sick after drinking it, and I really struggled not to be sick, you have to do it again another day. I get why people need it and would say 100% if its recommended to do it but if you don't need it I would suggest not putting yourself through it

Personally, if you're worried, I would self-monitor. A diagnosis has the potential to ruin a pregnancy so keep an eye on things and if your levels are crazy terrible, then see if medication is the answer. Most of the time attention to diet and exercise is what's needed.

Moominmiss · 27/10/2021 12:00

I ended up with GD having had no symptoms at all.

I would 100% get the test if offered. I don’t see why you wouldn’t. The drink might not be very nice, but imo it’s a very small price to pay for potentially finding out something that could harm your baby if left untreated.

Having the test and not having GD will cause no harm. Not having the test, but having GD certainly could.

llol031 · 27/10/2021 13:27

I did the test without any risk factors just for my own reassurance and I didn't have and have not suffered with GD throughout my pregnancy.

I suppose the test itself could be seen as a bit of a faff if you don't necessarily need to do it. Also something else to consider is I was informed that if my results came back even slightly abnormal e.g if the threshold was 1 and I was 1.1, they would refer me to attend the GD clinics on a regular basis which could have been quite an effort for actually very little.
