i've always checked my cervix whether it was trying to conceive etc, i'm pretty familiar with it! (i use clean hands so i don't need a lecture!) today i felt it and it feels like i can get it to stretch quite a lot/fit two fingers in (i didn't) i'm 39 weeks pregnant and been having period like cramps for a couple of days now! hopefully this is a good sign?? No idea. Ask your midwife?!

ByeBumpHiBaby · 24/10/2021 15:04

Is it recommended to check your own dilation? Confused

MiddleParking · 24/10/2021 15:05

Felt exactly like 0cm dilated to me!

DramaAlpaca · 24/10/2021 15:07

I wouldn't know, I've never checked my cervix.

marykitty · 24/10/2021 15:08

It is a good sign that the cervix is soft but I would advise against checking it again yourself, I see only risks and no benefits

marykitty · 24/10/2021 15:09

Btw I could not feel any difference until 6 cm

It doesn’t do any harm to check if you’re careful and have clean hands so ignore the Hmm comments. Let’s encourage women to get to know their own bodies in a safe manner.

For me I’ve always been able to feel when my cervix is ripening or dilating. It feels like a heavy, dragging sensation particularly when I sit on the toilet. Lots of women don’t feel it at all though. Good luck!

Wait, I am totally in favor of checking our bodies! I actually checked my cervix a lot during TTC and also pregnancy. I just feel that If you start to have dilatation and you try to enter your fingers in it and you are not trained, it could create issues and I would advise against it, from my pov.

@marykitty i completely agree! i would not insert anything but i always have done i knew when i was pregnant with my children because of it! Smile

My daughter was transverse so to me, 2cm was back to back contractions lasting a minute each time and screaming, agonising pain. I was 40+1.

Enwi · 24/10/2021 15:36

There are plenty of benefits.

Satiating your own curiosity and feeling calm and in control of your own body during early labour for one.

Sad that sounds horrendous.
