Baby's first movements - like period pains/being punched?

I am nearly 16 weeks pregnant with twins and I think I am feeling the first movements, but it feels a bit like period pains but quite localised, like not across my whole stomanch but just dull stabbing pains in specific areas. Almost like being poked by a pencil from the inside.

Is this the babies moving or is it something to be worried about (I'm not really worried but I would like to know if it is the babies - how exciting!)

mine felt more like bubbles and later pushing, now great big thumps!

nh101andhertwinbeans · 10/12/2007 15:57

Hey scorpio! Sometimes it feels like flutters, sometimes spasms, sometimes thumps, sometimes a creeping sensation - but I reckon they can't all be the babies! I really want to know which sensations are them, but I suppose no one can really say. I've just never heard them described as like mild period pains. So wanted to check it was OK!

they felt like tiny taps/bubbles/flutters - not really like period pains.

scorpio1 · 10/12/2007 15:59

flutters is the babies as could be the creeping, its hard to define isn't it!

i can't believe you're 16 weeks already, im nearly 23 weeks now, havign a girl the first girl for us after the 3 boys!

kelbel · 10/12/2007 16:03

I found it was like very light flutters, not like a pain, sure nothing to worry about but aways worth ringing mw if on your mind, twins could be different, 39+3 now so full on feet for me!x

Maybe the pains are stretching pains (do you still get them at this stage?)

nh101 I missed the part about you being pregnant with twins! Congratulations! I remember when you got your BFP, because it was shortly after my miscarriage.

That's great news! It could be stretching ligaments - you probably get them all the way through pregnancy - but anything you are worried about, it's always best to speak to your midwife.

I totally misread your name as being hert win beans

nh101 - when you say 'being punched' in the thread title - do you mean like a winded feeling? That could very well be due to the babies pressing against blood vessels/organs - most pregnant women usually experience this feeling later in pregnancy, but it makes sense yoou would experience it earlier due to being pregnant with twins.

nh101andhertwinbeans · 10/12/2007 16:35

No it is not really like being winded I don't think. It is more like a pain that makes you think "ooh, what's that?" and I'd kind of flinch like you would if you were being punched, but it is not that strong really and then it goes away. It is very difficult to explain isn't it!

could be one of the babies pressing on a nerve, or stretching ligaments. Speak to your midwife about it, it's always best to check these things out.

I had period type pains when I was around 16 weeks, I got my self in a right tiz over it and called a freind whos a midwife. Straight away she told me that it was the ligaments that hold the uterus in place stretching

nh101andhertwinbeans · 11/12/2007 11:09

Thanks Pk - I see the midwife next Monday so I am sure she will just smile as she always does as say 'it's all perfectly normal!'

No worries
Ah yes the midwife smile, comforting yet patronising at the same time, they are so good at that!
