Nightie v Jammies

I am intrigued to know why everyone and every bit of reading says only nighties when in hospital. I am a jammies girl at heart but want to know why specifically people say a nightie - am I missing something - with the exception of giving birth in a nightie of course!

Well my sister told me that there would be a lot of internal examinations afterwards to check bleeding/healing etc, but I had none at all, and stayed in my jammies the whole time.

I couldn't pull them up myself the first few times though, also if you're in a nightie you can sit/lie in your bed on an incontinence pad the hospital provides with the nightie around you not under you, and that way you don't bleed on your clothes.

Can't think of any other reasons!

I wasn't in hospital and I wore pyjamas (awkward sort all round ) after DS was born. In fact I had a whole range of pretty and and impractical pyjamas for swanning around in . I wore knickers with massive maternity pads and didn't have any probs with bleeding onto the trousers. No examinations either (but was pretty much nekkid in labour, not intentional tho...)

I also found pyjama tops handy for breast-feeding, just undo a few buttons and flop a boob out!

With DD1 I felt very exposed when it came to breastfeeding with a nightie on. Had to pull it right up as I hadn't got proper breastfeeding ones and the buttons didn't open far enough down.

Not a problem when in bed but kind of when visiting time started and I was sat there with my nightie up around my neck lol :D

2nd time around I got great pyjamas.

i wore nighty as had csection and pjs would have been on scar.i had button up ones so when bf it was easier.

I had maternity nighties, which had a sort of flappy bit that pulled over for feeding. I found that my legs got very warm in hospital, so a nightie was better for me.

I took a nightie and pj bottoms, nightie length was fab to cover leakage from lochia..never posed any probs.

I had a CS and wore jammies for the first night. I stuffed the catheter down the trouser leg. Next day I changed into a T-shirt and cycling shorts.

minspugs · 10/12/2007 13:23

my hospital wear for this pg is going to be a few pairs of asdas £3 tracky bottoms and a couple of breast feeding vest tops. and my nice comfy dressing gown. in fact thats what im going to wear prob for the first month of dcs life

PoinsettiaBouquets · 10/12/2007 17:36

Nighties were best for my first night - for padchecks, catheter and shower etc.
PJs are best for shlepping about and holding giant pads in place and easier breastfeeding. PS a CSection scar is nowhere near an elastic waistband!

Hersetta · 10/12/2007 19:03

Deinitely agree with Poinsettia. Nightie for the first night and then nice baggy pj's after that.

tyaca · 10/12/2007 22:03

ty to OP. as a first timer, i always worry about this as i cant imagine wearing nightie! god so vain.... i'm fairly sure there are other more pressing things i should be worrying about...

mum4ever · 12/12/2007 20:50

Why not get a cheap pair of each and you can see how you feel - sometimes pyjamas just feel so warm in the wards
