Severe SPD. Help?!!

I am 28 weeks pregnant currently and cannot cope with the pain of SPD.
I already have arthritis in my hips and 2 slipped discs in my spine so the SPD feels 10x worse.
I am on crutches already and have spoken to the doctor today about the possibility of a wheelchair but I have 2 young children (3 years, and 20 months) so is this a good idea?
I also have a catheter so cant sit in the bath for hours like I did with my first.
I'm already on codiene regularly which i absolutely hate myself for taking but dont feel like i have an alternative. I do wear a support belt

What can I do?

I would thoroughly recommend regular appointments with an osteopath

SouthwestSis · 17/10/2021 07:44

Have you been seen by a physio?

yesterdayisinthepast · 17/10/2021 08:01

I'm currently pregnant and have the same thing. I also had it extremely bad in my first pregnancy however I wasn't medicated so I probably didn't have it as bad as you!

With this pregnancy my GP sent me the link for a self referral to pysio. When you mention you're pregnant, they fast track you so I'd defo recommend that.

I also try to do stretches on the floor two times a day which really helps but the best thing is going in a swimming pool! When I was 5 months pregnant I stayed in a hotel that had a pool, it did wonders for my back. I didn't even swim, I just did stretches in the pool.

I've now signed up for a pool membership in the local centre near me. If possible I'd really recommend dipping into a pool even once a week if you can. It makes such a huge difference

I unfortunately just cant afford it and we cant get it on the nhs

I am unable to go in a swimming pool due to my catheter. I did hydrotherapy in my first pregnancy which helped so I am gutted I cant this time.

I have had a physio referral however they still will not see me in person due to covid, so all i have got off them is exercises to do and "take regular pain relief" :/

It is such a pain...

@Kstewart18 I really feel for you. I suffered with SPD with my first, I didnt know what it was, just thought it was normal. 2nd pregnancy alot earlier and alot more painful. It would reduce me to tears trying to walk 10mins to pre school and back. If I did walk there and sit down, I could barely move when I tried to get up. The only suggestions I got were dont walk more than 5mins, which wasn't realistic for me. I had the support band but it was to tight and hurt more. I did use a gym ball to sit on and that did help take some pressure off. I'm sure you've been told all this but try not to dp anything that has your legs open, sit with legs together, when getting in and out of the car put a carrier bag on the seat, legs together and spin to the side to get out. I found pushing a buggy or trolley made mine alot worse. So sorry I can't offer more suggestions I just wanted you to know I understand and sympathise xx as its something people cant see they dont always understand the pain of it xxx

Kstewart18 · 17/10/2021 10:32

Oh bless you! It's really horrible isnt it, leaves you unable to live your life. I'm always being told that doctors dont really have a good understanding of it so it's all just pain management which is hard in pregnancy.
I hadn't thought of a gym ball though and I still have one from my last pregnancy so I will definitely give that a go! Thankyou xx

@Kstewart18 I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and already got some of those familiar pains yesterday pushing a trolley. Yes the gym ball helps. Soft of roll your hips on it. Kind of stretches things and takes the pressure off your hips and pelvis.

Try and take it easy as you can, the more you do the more it hurts! Xxx

HyphenCobra · 17/10/2021 11:33

I had in first 2 pregnancies and it started at 9 weeks in my third. I'm currently 20 weeks and picking up crutches this week from physio.

My first i was on painkillers but didn't really do much except give me constipation.

Have a look at pelvic partnership website.

In regards to your physio - they are failing miserably in their duty of care to you. They should be offering you acupuncture and manual therapy as well as excercises.

Put in a formal complaint to the department. I did as was not going to be fobbed off and immediately got transferred to a senior woman's therapist!!!

Don't suffer in silence xx

Highly highly recommend an osteopath. They literally saved my sanity having been on crutches and extreme agony from about 16weeks and osteopath bought the standard day to day not moving pain down to completely manageable and I almost feel like it's just normal pregnacy pains now (except for at night)

yesterdayisinthepast · 17/10/2021 20:05

Ah ofc so sorry! I completely forgot you said you have a catheter in so ofc you can't go in a swimming pool! That's so annoyingAngry

As for physio that's so ridiculous I'm sure they should be doing more then giving exercises that you can get from Youtube.
I hate that I can't be of any help because SPD is so horrible let alone having that on top of your other health issues

I hired an electric scooter, the sit down type, googled on line and found a company. You need to insure yourself, but I found it to be a lifesaver. Worth a try?
