Floradix is meant to be good I think. It's a liquid tonic, you can get it from the chemist.

MummyToSteven · 11/11/2004 21:29

have orange juice at the same time as iron rich food/iron tabs - vitamin c helps the iron absorption

pupuce · 11/11/2004 21:31

How many weeks are you?
It is ideal to be betwen 9 and 9.5 at 38 weeks.... Major research supports this - can show it to you too!

Floradix also comes in tablet form which I found much easier to take (the liquid tastes foul!). I refused a blood transfusion for low iron caused by excessive blood loss (nearly a litre and a half) during my ceasarean against medical advice and managed to get mine up to a level they were happy with after two days! (they seemed quite surprised - I was literally ochre-coloured yellow) I took it in conjunction with a homeopathic tissue salt tablet called Ferrum Met, I think, and also took above the stated dose with the Floradix - but I was desperate as really didn't want a tranfusion (this is not recommended though). I also stuffed myself with iron-rich food. I felt better almost immediately as well, so it can work really quickly. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that - I am sorry but the birthing centre is not using latest evidence based midwifery.

Mosschops30, no that doesn't seem odd - apparently some people don't absorb normal iron tablets (e.g. Pregaday) - I never did and mine carried on going down on this even though my midwife had told me to double the dose. Floradix is the only thing that has ever got mine up. Holland & Barretts sell it.

Pupuce, why not post the link if you can find it. I found in on an old thread and send it to a couple of friends with similar worries. Very interesting.

I kept mine up during pg with multi-vits+iron, taken with orange juice, every day. If you do that plus eggs with oj and red meat with oj every day - and no tea because that reduces absorption - you might manage it...good luck anyway, mosschops!

Yes definitely. My mum is a homeopath which is why I'm so sure. hope that helps.

BMJ 1995 Feb 25;310(6978):489-91

Relation between maternal haemoglobin concentration and birth weight in different ethnic groups.

Steer P, Alam MA, Wadsworth J, Welch A.

Academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.

OBJECTIVETo assess the relation of the lowest haemoglobin concentration in pregnancy with birth weight and the rates of low birth weight and preterm delivery in different ethnic groups. DESIGNRetrospective analysis of 153,602 pregnancies with ethnic group and birth weight recorded on a regional pregnancy database during 1988-91. The haemoglobin measurement used was the lowest recorded during pregnancy. SETTINGNorth West Thames region. SUBJECTS115,262 white women, 22,206 Indo-Pakistanis, 4570 Afro-Caribbeans, 2642 mediterraneans, 3905 black Africans, 2351 orientals, and 2666 others. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURESBirth weight and rates of low birth weight (< 2500 g) and preterm delivery (< 37 completed weeks). RESULTSMaximum mean birth weight in white women was achieved with a lowest haemoglobin concentration in pregnancy of 85-95 g/l; the lowest incidence of low birth weight and preterm labour occurred with a lowest haemoglobin of 95-105 g/l. A similar pattern occurred in all ethnic groups. CONCLUSIONS--The magnitude of the fall in haemoglobin concentration in pregnancy is related to birth weight; failure of the haemoglobin concentration to fall below 105 g/l indicates an increased risk of low birth weight and preterm delivery. This phenomenon is seen in all ethnic groups. Some ethnic groups have higher rates of low birth weight and preterm delivery than white women, and they also have higher rates of low haemoglobin concentrations. This increased rate of "anaemia," however, does not account for their higher rates of low birth weight, which occurs at all haemoglobin concentrations.

Mosschops30 - I said Ferrum Met, NOT ferrum sulphate. Sorry if I'm being dense and these are the same thing but it was definitely Ferrum Met that I took.

Why would you bleed?
What are your plans for the 3rd stage ?

Ellaroo · 11/11/2004 21:49

Oh sorry, no idea, but no-one seemed too bothered about Floradix not agreeing with other things any of the times I've had to take it.

pupuce · 11/11/2004 21:49

I am going to have a rant here.... not meant at you Mosschops....
If the MW is SOOO concerned about your iron level she should measure it not your HB level, it's not the same ! It's a different test that isn't usually done !
A low HB level is a sign that your placenta is working well and that NOTHING is wrong.... grrrrr....

Mears has told me in the past that they do get more cautious with women wanting a natural 3rd stage.... but as I say if it is your iron level they are genuinely worried about then this isn't the test...
I'll get the name for you and who ever else might face the same battle....
