This post could cause a bit of a stir so I apologise in advance as thats not the intention - I’m just looking for advice (I don’t judge anyone on whether they do it/don’t do it).

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get rid of the smell of cannabis. I live in a 4-in-a-block and my downstairs neighbours have just moved in this week but already my flat STINKS of cannabis as their smoking it 24/7 in the flat. Its mainly above my daughters bedroom & the livingroom that the smell is so prominent which causes quite a bit of anxiety! I’m 28 weeks pregnant, got a 1 year old daughter and honestly I am terrified incase it could affect baby or my daughter - honestly I have no clue if it could or couldn’t but I would imagine so? Its a private let but really don’t want to be causing myself a headache with anyone unless its needed.

What can I do to eliminate the smell thats also safe during pregnancy and with little ones in the house?

I'd go straight to the landlord.
They're unlikely to give up smoking it because it bothering a neighbour and any sort of smoke is bad for yours and yoke childrens lungs.

Excuse all the typos 🤦‍♀️

I'd go to your landlord. If the neighbours seem really nice otherwise then it might be worth a friendly chat, I suppose.

Passive smoking and passive inhalation of cannabis isn't good for anyone, especially not children. Rather than trying to mask it, you need to get rid of it at the source (the neighbours).

FlowerArranger · 16/10/2021 00:27

It's nothing to do with the landlord.

WorraLiberty · 16/10/2021 00:28

You have my sympathy as cannabis smells absolutely vile!

However, I doubt the smell would cause you or your DC any harm - certainly no more than traffic pollution you all breath in ever day.

If you're not up to having a private word with them (and let's face it, that probably wouldn't stop them), then a word with their landlord is probably the best you can do.

@FlowerArranger

It's nothing to do with the landlord.
It has if for example there's a no smoking clause in their contract.

Most rentals (assuming it is a rental), won't allow even tobacco to be smoked inside the property.

FlowerArranger · 16/10/2021 02:17

In whose contract? Are you suggesting the OP involves her neighbour's landlord? It would be up to their landlord to enforce such a clause if there is one, but in real life I doubt they'd want to get involved. At the end of the day this is a matter between the OP and her neighbours. Unless she wants to report them to the council or the police.

CatonMat · 16/10/2021 02:27

You could put a friendly (anonymous) note through their door.
Tell them you are just making them aware that their smoke is filtering into others' homes.
They may genuinely not know.

I’m sorry about this, how awful for you and your children. I have a family member to whom this happened..

Cannabis smokers are often incredibly inconsiderate, leaving joint ends in parks which poison dogs and not realising the extent to which their habits affect the health and well-being of those around especially in communal situations.
It sounds like a police or council matter but unfortunately there’s not much that can be done. I’m just really sorry for you.

Yes of course. If you read the thread, that's what I and others have suggested.

You may be right in that the Landlord isn't bothered about tenants smoking indoors, but equally they might be.

I mean there's no point in having a no smoking clause in the first place (if indeed there is one), if they're not bothered.

In the meantime, air purifier might work. When we had building works it really sucked the smells up, and we just bought one for about £70

Fujimora · 16/10/2021 13:35

Most tenancies have a clause about illegal/anti social behaviour.

If tenants do not respect the terms of the tenancy agreement that provides grounds for eviction.

Cannabis is a class B drug - illegal to possess it. And smoking it around small children and pregnant women is anti social.

So I would absolutely start with the landlord.
