Growth scan... reassurance?

SweetSunflowerBoo · 15/10/2021 12:27

I've just been to my midwife appointment (34+4) and I have to have a growth scan on Monday...

They said baby's heartbeat is good but I'm still so scared.... this is my rainbow baby and I can't lose him

Is it quite common to have to have a growth scan?

I am a tiny person- as in size 4/6 clothes but I can see a massive difference each week in my bump so I don't understand how he's not the size they want him to be this week.

Reassurance please??

Yes of course!!

I had a baby at 35 weeks he was born by c section when I had a GA. I was very sick. He is thriving!! He went to SCBU but had no treatment there
I went home the day after my c section and he came home 5 days after he was born

At 35 weeks babies are strong xxxx you are strong you got this 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

@SweetSunflowerBoo he would be absolutely fine lovely xx

Thank you everyone so much for the reassurance and the help understanding this!

I can't believe sometimes how nice utter strangers can be- yet a midwife can't even reassure me in the slightest ? Confused

Thank you all!!!

@SweetSunflowerBoo

If anything WAS wrong and he had to be delivered early- he should survive at this point now shouldn't he? I'll be 35weeks on my scan
Easily. I know several babies born around 35 weeks and they were fine, didn't need any extra assistance. Maybe a few nights extra stay in hospital but that was it.

I got sent for a growth scan last week as bump was small . . . to find that baby inside was measuring very large! These things are very inaccurate and even worse if you are not average yourself (dh and I are tall).

I also went into what seemed like early labour at 33 weeks, the midwives said a 33 weeker would probably spend 3-4 weeks in the special care baby unit but be fine. A 35 weeker will be even better off.

Cross posted with everyone!

SweetSunflowerBoo · 15/10/2021 13:50

@DuneFan
Just doesn't make sense to me that they can worry you you're baby is small but turns out they are big
I mean I get mistakes are made and it's not very accurate but wow

So it means I could have literally been worrying over nothing - what a headache

OP, I just wanted to say, re the sickness thing, it drives me up the wall when I hear of HCP's dismissing pregnancy nausea like that. There are several very safe medications that can be prescribed to help pregnancy nausea and vomiting these days. I know this knowledge is probably a bit late to be of much use to you in this pregnancy; but if you have this issue in later pregnancies, look up pregnancysicknesssupport.com and insist that your GP/obstetrician prescribe something to help you.
There's literally NO need for women to suffer these days.

Very best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy, and enjoy your lovely little baby!

I had growth scans for an off the chart small baby. He was a perfect 6.12 and now he is now a lanky streak.

Please, don't worry. You have a strong heartbeat and measurements look good. This seems purely a precaution. By this time next week you will be wondering what you were ever worried for. Flowers

I had a very small baby and multiple growth scans. At 37 weeks she was predicted to be 5lbs 9oz and was born at 38 weeks 5lbs 12oz. My scans were because she was slipping down the curves - 50th centile at 20w, 25th centile at 28w and 9th centile at 37w. She was poorly after birth for other reasons (Group B Strep induced sepsis) and was 2nd centile on discharge. With the exception of a dip down to below the 0.4th centile when she wasnt feeding well, she's stayed on the 2nd centile ever since (now 4 months old).

As the HV said, not all babies can be 50th! There have to be some big and small, and this is maybe just her natural position. Me and my husband are not small people - we are both tall and broad so she must take after another family member Smile. If the sonographer has any concerns at the scan, they will refer you for a chat with the consultant. We could ask him lots of questions and he put our minds at ease. We were booked for an induction in fact because she was so small, but she made an appearance before the induction date!

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

@Alfxn thank you
It took About 3 months of vomiting every single thing that passed my lips and me ending up in hospital multiple times dehydrated before anyone took me seriously.
I'm on cyclizine. And even now still when I call up to get more as I literally can't go without them (I have tried coming off of them many times) I get hell from the doctor or whoever is speaking to me. "ALLLLL women deal with sickness when pregnant - just deal with it. If you can't deal with this how will you cope with a baby?" AngryAngry

@SummerHouse thank you, I am such a worrier anyway let alone when it's something to do with baby that I have no control about.
I'm looking forward to seeing him as I haven't seen him on scan since 20weeks so I'm just trying to focus on that. And I can feel him move too so that's a very good thing!

@GuidingSpirit I'm glad everything turned out okay - Atleast if there is anything wrong I will be able to ask questions with someone who can give me all the information and reassurance I need.
I just hope the sonographer can reassure me quite quick that baby's okay as it's the silence when they are scanning me that is the worst bit (I know they have to concentrate but it's when you can hear the clock tick becuse it's so quiet that gives me anxiety)

Oh wow, what a comment - that person that made that comment must have had the emotional intelligence of a rock. I would hazard a gueas that they never went through HG!! Hmm

If it helps reassure you, my baby is 3 months old and I far far prefer my life now compared to going through pregnancy again!

SweetSunflowerBoo · 15/10/2021 17:52

@Alfxn it's saying something if that person has now left midwifery and the healthcare area (whether she quit or was fired I am not sure but will bet the latter after I made several official complaints about her)

I'm so glad your little one turned out okay! I've always said I wanted 2 babies but I honestly don't know if I could imagine going through all this again let alone with a toddler or kid to care for Shock
