Feel awful! It's like a never ending hangover or something. I feel constantly sick but I'm not physically being sick. Just queasy and nauseous all the time.

I've been off work this week because I can't face going in to the office. Feel bad about taking time off but my boss doesn't seem to be interested in putting any reasonable adjustments in place, like working form home for a couple of weeks, so I might need to get a doctors note. Anyone got a fit note for morning sickness before?

Is there anything that can ease this sickness? I've tried plain food and things like ginger

Yes the doctor will give you a sick note

Ask the GP for some morning sickness tablets

Thanks for the reply-

I also meant to add, will taking time off for MS affect my maternity leave at all?

I would check your blood pressure.

Mine had fallen off a cliff.

I am still suffering in the morning while I increase my blood pressure, but after a few hours I can raise and stabilise it.

Unfortunately I have had to throw the no caffeine rule out of the window. The only thing which raises my pressure quick enough is a VERY strong coffee (and I dont even usually have coffee!).

That and if you are taking pregnacare or any iron containing tablets just throw them with gusto into the bin.

Was just about to come on to suggest boiled ginger sweets. When my MS was bad I was the same, nauseous but only actually vomited a handful of times throughout the pregnancy, I ordered some ginger boiled sweets as it was the only thing I could stomach. Found it good that I could just suck them rather than other things that I'd have to chew on.

Have you explicitly asked your boss if you can wfh due to your MS or are you just hoping he might suggest? Just asking because some employers are very much "if you don't ask you don't get" and it would appear that it would be better for the company (in their eyes) if you wfh rather than go off sick and don't work completely??

And yes unfortunately it will affect your Maternity Pay if leave is unpaid and affects your end of month pay packet during the calculation period. Which for a baby due 25th March is from 16th October to 11th December.

@LemonSwan
I didn't think it affected your maternity pay if a doctor signs you off sick.
I had hyperemesis and was signed off for four months in total with unpaid leave and was still eligible for the government maternity leave.

sunnyside257 · 15/10/2021 13:53

@Tee20x - I have asked to work from home and apparently they can't accommodate that. They said the best they can do is sit me somewhere closest the toilet Hmm which isn't really too helpful considering my role is face to face with clients.

@LemonSwan - in what way does it affect your maternity leave? Would you just get paid slightly less or would you get nothing? I'm still early in my pregnancy, only about 7 weeks

I found that being sick was better than nausea. If got to the point where I'd just use a toothbrush to gag and induce vomiting.

You might not want to do this, and you're probably not supposed to. But my point is don't feel like you have to hold it in, you'll feel better just getting it out

Not that I am aware of - however possibly different companies may be different

  • in my company if a doctor signs you off a doctor signs you off and pay will not be changed or maternity leave effected
  • plus this is something a man can never have so to be penalised and have your maternity leave affected will not go great for your company
LemonSwan · 15/10/2021 18:47

in what way does it affect your maternity leave?

For me it would affect because I am paid hourly, rather than on a salary.

So my entitlement is affected by whether we have a long or short months during the calculation period, or whether I take any unpaid leave / sick leave.

sunnyside257 · 15/10/2021 19:45

@LemonSwan - aw okay, I'm salaried so it might not affect me in the same way. It's so complicated

I always found salt and vinegar crisps helped...if you are/feeling sick then all the salt sort of helps.

BBonBoard · 16/10/2021 18:28

Has anyone been prescribed anything? I've been prescribed cyclizine and prochlorperazine and neither have done much.

sunnyside257 · 16/10/2021 19:11

@BBonBoard - I've not spoken to the doctor yet. What are those? Like anti-sickness tablets? It much use if they don't help Hmm

OP posts:
BBonBoard · 16/10/2021 19:30

@sunnyside257 ya they're anti-sickness tablets and they've done nothing. My jaw is hurting from vomiting so much and so violently.

Samsara12 · 16/10/2021 19:37

If it helps I had morning sickness for 7 months took tablets the whole 7 months which eased it. X

BBonBoard · 16/10/2021 19:51

Thanks @Samsara12, which ones did you take?

HettiSpagetti · 16/10/2021 20:03

I ate a lot of smints, they helped a lot with the constant nausea, the ones in the plastic box were better than the ones in the metal tin.

Eating immediately when I got up in the morning helped keep my breakfast down, as did a pocket full of almonds that I would chain eat throughout the day - as getting hungry didn’t help and I was starving a lot the second time around.

My blood pressure was also through the floor, but midwife wasn’t overly concerned!

breadfortea · 16/10/2021 20:07

The only thing that helped me was something my GP suggested. Take a couple of plain biscuits like rich tea or gingernuts up to bed with you. When you wake up reach out and eat the biscuit before you even lift your head off the pillow. Stay laying down for a few minutes then slowly sit up and then get up. Worked for me. Its horrid feeling sick. Hope you feel better soon.

Samsara12 · 16/10/2021 21:19

@BBonBoard

Thanks *@Samsara12*, which ones did you take?
I took cylizine, took a bit of getting use to but would do the same again if I ever had morning sickness like i did. I would still be sick everyday but it just eased it and helped me get through the day and feel a bit more normal! Now have a beautiful healthy baby boy 6 months old! Hope this helps and hope the sickness eases for you. I know exactly how your feeling xxxx
